My brother knows HVAC but he's so fucking lazy he wouldn't explain how to do this, only what is wrong.

My furnace keeps turning off after only being on for maybe 5 minutes. An although it puts out heat it keeps turning off and tries to turn back on but doesn't unless you turn it off then on again and it does the same thing.

He told me there is a flame sensor in my furnace and it needs to be cleaned by using steel wool or a light grit sand paper.

How do I do this? How can I find out where the sensor is? He said it's a long metal rod and it might not be visible

How do I take it off first? Which bolts should I remove to access it? I think the AC is the bottom portion although I may be wrong

It's a condo, Not a house.

I suspect it might be the smaller area where you can see the gas, Is that right or should I just remove the whole 20+ bolts

You are messing with electricity and gas...
To find the flame sensor, find out where the fire is coming from.

Here's the pic of the small opening.

It looks like it has two of those sensors. Why?

Also how do I get these out. It's way to small for a screw driver

It's been years since I had to deal with this.
I think it's that L-shaped metal rod

Heating System
Burners
The burners can be removed for cleaning or changing
orifices. To remove the burners:
1. Disconnect electrical service and turn off gas to the
appliance.
2. Disconnect the high voltage (ignitor) wire and the flame
sensor wire (S1) from the ignition control.
3. Remove ignitor and flame sensor.
4. Remove the four screws that mount the burner right side
plate (houses the ignitor/flame sensing rod).
5. Carefully remove the burner right side plate.
6. Burners are now exposed and can be individually removed
from assembly by removing the two screws that hold each
burner in the burner rack.
Burners can be cleaned using a bottle brush.
Orifices are threaded into the gas manifold and can be
removed by unscrewing.
When replacing the burner tray assembly, take care in
installing the flame sensor and ignitor rods back into the
burner plate. Reconnect the ignitor and flame sensor wires.

the L shaped thing only provides spark for ignition

the symptoms you present indicate that there is a possible over or under temperature condition in the heat exchanger.

There is a device that senses the temperature in the heat exchanger, if it exceeds a set temperature it will shut the unit down. it does this in case there is a leak in the heat exchanger. It also lets the system know that the heat is on.

Mine kept doing the same thing as your and I found one of the pipes in the heat exchanger had popped loose from it flange.

it can also be caused by a faulty sensor.

here is the part I am refering to:

this one appears to be for your unit.

Are you OP? Why are you asking if he's sure?

One of them is a spark rod, the other is the flame sense. Clean them both, and not with steel wool. That's retarded. Use something softer.

Also, if your ignition module (the thing the sense and spark are connected to) isn't working, cleaning it won't do shit. I'd say its about a 20% chance that it's the ignition module. If cleaning doesn't help, then you know what it is.

Also, it would only be the flame sense if it shuts off within a few seconds, and doesn't come on at all.
