I have been wanting to make an aluminum foundry and casting aluminum parts, but I see some articles saying aluminum is somehow related to alzheimer's and parkinson's. How dangerous is it? I see people on youtube melting and casting parts without any respirator or anything on, but they're not exactly credible sources. Anyone know how dangerous it can be?
>>
>>1086580
stop reading retarded tabloids and buzzfeed shit(there is so far no real evidence about aluminium causing alzheimer or parkinson), if you want using respirator just use it
>>
>>1086580
do it outdoors, and you'll be fine
>>
I swear this melting aluminum is a fucking /diy/ meme.
>>
>>1086607
unless you have a business which would have shit like fume hoods, who the hell does this stuff inside?
>>
>>1086629
Aluminum has an insanely low viscosity making it very easy to cast with, additionally it is dirt cheap and lower temperature to melt

And on top of that it is hard to oxidize so it has minimal slag

So it's not that it's a common /diy/ melting meme, it's just everyone's first casting choice
>>
>>1086657
But it's chilly outside
>>
>>1086580
Aluminum is one of the most abundant elements in the earth's crust. If it caused alzheimers and parkinsons we'd all be retarded and shaking. Not saying metal fumes are any fun to breathe, but it won't be the aluminum that fucks you up (it has an extremely low vapor pressure anyways). Zinc is the main thing to watch out for, metal fume fever sucks. Don't burn zinc. Cadmium too, it's like zinc except instead of giving you a headache it turns your bones to mush and rots all your organs. Don't melt cadmium. Lead is fine, just don't eat it or pick your nose after handling it or you'll get stupid. Anything else is probably too high-melting to fuck with in a flowerpot.

Tl;dr don't be scared of aluminum, go melt some cans and lawnmower engines.
>>
>>1086794
do you want burn your house down ?
>>
>>1086931
Can't burn steel shipping containers
>>
>>1086946
unless you get your hands on some jet fuel
>>
>>1086793
Tin is better.
>>
>>1086629
>I swear this melting aluminum is a fucking /diy/ meme.

That's because hot things are fun. If you want to make useful things, you weld, fab and machine. If you like fire, make fire and put stuff in fire.
>>
ITT: Another female devices thread, need more strength to crush cans with bare hands.

Weaklings
>>
>>1086808
you can't compare the aluminiumcompound in the earth withe the compounds you get them when you heat alumium up. the one in the earth crust are inactive, the others reactive.
do it outside, do not breath the fumes in and you should be on the safe side. zunless you gonna do it every day probaly, then there is the risk of lung damage, but thats another topic.
>>
>>1087224
It might be shit, but it's almost free. Free is the best.
>>
>>1086580
Anyone interested in a foundry needs to watch this. https://youtu.be/l2FuvKTyRMQ
>>
>>1086946
Can actually. I melted 1/4" thick steal with a shop vac and used waste oil.
>>
>>1087513
You're not wrong. Smashing cans sucks dick tho. Im building a fucking bailer.
>>
>>1087536
Melting is not the same thing as burning
>>
>>1087197
Any aluminum that makes its way into your body is already aluminum oxide, which is exactly what you find in nature. There's no way an Al atom will make it from the crucible to your lungs without hitting an O2 molecule on the way there.
>>
In theory. Could you purge the crucible with argon while you melt and have zero slag?
>>
>>1087800
There is air being blown through the foundry which would probably blow out any gas you pumped in. I could be wrong as I'm new to this, but I don't think it'd work out too well.
>>
>>1087571
Lolwut.

Waste oild melts steel beams. Just not well.

Read what I originally posted, I said "can't burn a steel shipping container"
>>
>>1086580
Okay listen you need to shut the fuck up,just don't breath in any smoke from the aluminum smelting or ingest it, if you do it MIGHT CAUSE some medical problems.

If the scented dicksoaps and dickcandles work out i'm making some dick piggy banks out of plaster. The kind u habe to smash. Then moving onto small cement dick ornaments and god willing giant dick fountains like pic related.

Zinc is the metal that releases a gas when melted at too high of a temperature. I was stupid enough to melt a few grams of zinc while my face was 9 inches away. It wasn't a pleasant experience.
>>
>>1088806
You can get heavy metal poisoning from all types of metal
Zinc just happens to be one of the metals that will cause poisoning real quick.

Youll feel like you have the worst flu of your life for like 2 weeks.
>>
>>1088728
why!?

Just don't use galvanized metal
>>
>>1088807
>Youll feel like you have the worst flu of your life for like 2 weeks.
It's like 2 days, and flulike symptoms are the extent of the "poisoning". It's unpleasant but not dangerous or damaging. And it stops being an irritant with repeated exposure, though avoiding it for a few days causes the tolerance to fade, leading to the name "Monday fever" among workers occupationally exposed to zinc fumes. And individual tolerance varies. Zinc doesn't bother me at all.

As for you, >>1088806 the metals to watch out for are chromium (stainless, chrome plating, and some zinc plating), which is a short-term irritant and potent carcinogen, and cadmium (old plated stuff), which causes organ failure and various other nasty stuff. Generally, avoid hot work and grinding with mystery plated metal.

You can't find tin in literally every trash bin, or buy tin products in literally every supermarket
Alluminium on the contrary...

It's a long story but the short version

>watch king of random flower pot foundry YouTube
>start casting
>have he'll
>/b obviously has 2 comments of legitimate help and then "you should cast dicks.
>cast Dickson
>spend hundreds on casting Dickson
>Moar dicklick Moar MOOOAR.
>ALL friends and family find out I am a duck farmer.

>present day doing the science casting scented soaps and candles.

>my life is dicks.
>>
>>1089720

No offense; are you gay?

God bless you either way dickfarmer
>>
>>1086580
I built a foundry last year for smelting cans and making casts. It worked to an extent but by the time it was all said and done honestly it's more worthwhile just to save up the 300 or so dollars and buy an electric one.

At least then it's more reliable and if you get a really good one you might be able to do even steel.
>>
>>1086592
there actually is.

>>1086580
Think of it like this, if you suspect a health problem, prepare for it. You'll be fine.
>>
Posting this here since it has to do with melting down metals.

Do you ever sell your aluminum bars? How much product do you move?

I live in a city that doesn't seem to have a good foundry business and was considering doing this part time. Can I get some info on what you make and how much you move on an average month?
>>
>>1086946
Aluminum can't melt steel containers

Those damn dirty jews
>>
>>1089737
Nothing about dickfarming is gay. Married to a human female. Although I will say I'm desensitized to anything dick related. Just doesn't bother me. Thanks!
>>
>>1089366
It can fucking kill you.

http://www.anvilfire.com/iForge/tutor.php?lesson=safety3/demo
>>
>>1087943
It can certainly burn the typical hardwood FLOOR in a container.
>>
>>1087110
Goddamit...
>>
>>1090648
I personally don't move shit as the scrap yard doesn't want pretty melted shit and it's too small and amount to bother nearby foundries.

So I'm skipping intermediate level casting and going straight to sub industrial. I have access to a dumptruck that can haul 17 ton or a tractor trailer that can hail 20 or so. I'll set up an account with a localish foundry and buy aluminum at scrap price. If there is no money to be had I'll form it or trade it to a place to make never ending supply of aluminum sheet. Start tight welding my shop and do it till I die.
>>
>>1092070
And Muh skin. Bucket list though.

>I got that scar from an unfortunate smelting accident.
>>
>>1087197
I remember learning about how back at the turn of the 19th century, aluminum was like a sign of wealth because it was so hard to make, then the modern process came along that uses electrolysis or something, and now we drink soda out of it.
>>
>>1092114
Napoleon used Aluminum plates and silverware, while his guests had to settle for Gold.
>>
>>1086946
you can bury them though, they make great bunkers.
>>
>>1092203
I know, I've got one as my workshop where I smelt aluminum and store my artificial crab meat
>>
>>1092114
There is a triangle on the white house. Like 70 pounds. Was more valuable than gold. Now it cast more to remove it then leave it. Kek
>>
>>1092706
Hopefully only 1/3 of a ton. No more. No less.
>>
>>1092203
No, not realy.. unless you keep the edges and roof clear.
