Your question is small?
Irrelevant?
Don't know where to ask?
Are you stupid?

You've come to the right place!

Anyone know how I'd go about sourcing small blocks of burl wood? Locally ideally. I really only need like a 6"x8"x3" block to make a mount for a DIY oscilloscope I'm giving my dad for christmas

I want to build a switching circuit for diverting signal to and from guitar pedals as well I want to switch power on and off to the pedals at the same time.

Right now I am thinking of using an EDE2208 momentary to toggle ic and a couple of nlas44599's. I don't think that the nlas is capable of handling the necessary current through its switches though. Am I wrong? I am not very good at finding appropriate parts.

Are those aluminium electrolitic capacitors?
>>
>>1084987

i think so. Those are definitly caps. You can replace them with normal caps in the same size.

Will a permanent jumper fix them or have some other negative side-effect?
Any other ideas on how to fix my phones?
>>

>normal caps
What do you mean by this? Aren't "aluminium electrolytic" the normal?
>>
>>1084995

There are plenty of fish in the sea, it depends on so many factors whats commonly used in this piece of electronics.

But yes, the most used ones around the globe are the electrolyt caps.
>>
>>1084990
>You can replace them with normal caps in the same size.
So, if those are made of another material, and I put electrolytic capacitors on the place, they will not blow up? Consider I'm able to read the values on mF and VDC.
>>
>>1084990
>Those are definitly caps.
The size with the tips are the positive, or the negatives?
>>
>>1085002

I would say yes, but im only 90% sure.

What's important is that nF/mF and voltage are the right size.

It normally doesn't matter what type of Dielectric is built in the cap.

normally caps have two pins and the negative pin is highlited with a black marking / and often also with a minus, just check the picture.

>>
>>1085011
Those on my picture are not!!!
>>
>>1085005
>What's important is that nF/mF and voltage are the right size.
This brings another problem: those capacitors are from the 1950s~1960s, so the "mF" can be really "uF", because people on that era wrote "mF" meaning "micro", not "mili". Should I consider it's "micro", or "mili"?
>>
>>1085015

I see now. No need to angry about my answers amigo. Do you got a circuit diagram where you can look? If not try to follow the solderlines and see if another part got a highlighted negative port and is connected on the same solder line like the caps.

Also the whole pcb looks fucked up, i don't really know if its worth the effort to replace the parts. But if you need it do it. Also make sure to clean it with some pure alcohol. And make sure everything dried before you plug it in again.
>>
>>1085018

Another good question. If i take a look at the size i would say its micro farad. Milli Farad caps are really really damn huge like you use them in amplifiers for car subwoofers.
>>
>>1085023
>Milli Farad caps are really really damn huge
Oh, understood. I though it was the opposite: mF capacitors being smaller than uF ones. I was wrong. 1 mF is 1000 uF.
>>
>>1085019
>No need to angry about my answers amigo.
I'm not angry.

>Do you got a circuit diagram where you can look?
Nope.

>If not try to follow the solderlines
I will do this later. Pic related.

>the whole pcb looks fucked up
By the electrolyte? This can be cleaned.

>I don't really know if its worth the effort to replace the parts
I want to fix this device. The original board is original. If I build another one, the device becomes less original.

> Also make sure to clean it with some pure alcohol. And make sure everything dried before you plug it in again.
I already have isopropyl. I will not be able to clean it totally, because I will not unsolder all components. But it evaporates almost instantly, so there should be no problem with it.

I have a little 5 amp hour sealed lead acid battery that's dead as fuck at less than 6 volts. I have another 18 aah battery that's just fine. Can I attach them in parallel using little alligator leads so that the charger will see enough voltage to charge or will the size disparity cause one of them to be damaged or explode? The charger is only rated for 750 ma

That is fine, but the one is probably ruined and will not recharge

Lead acid batteries don't take any special charging stuff

6 V at the terminals (assuming it's a 12V one) is a tossup between

what I would do is watch the (non charging) voltage once in a while to see which one is it

both the chips you mentioned seem to be obsolete. i'd go for a proximity switch chip like the PCF8883, with a 2n3904, 2n3906 transistor pair to create an open-collector output that can handle about 150mA, and up to 30V

i wants me a variac but i dont wanna spend a couple hundred bucks or buy used (like anyone ever sells theirs anyway). found a 20 amp one from a company called 'circuit specialists' for $104 shipped with 4-5 star reviews on amazon and ebay with the only issues being cosmetic issues and the fact that the dial shaft doesnt have a top bearing so it wobbles a bit. other than that it seems solid.

anyone used or own one from this company?

Some capacitors on this board have non-commercial values. What to do?
>500 μF
>250 μF
>5 μF
(written as mf)

They should be, according to the shop:
>470 μF
>220 μF
>4.7 μF

But they aren't! How can I overcome this problem?
>>
>>1085901

ignore the differences. tolerances on electrolytics are very loose anyway, like +20%, -80%. if you're autistically inclined, just buy higher values. you almost never go wrong by going higher.

PAINT

So I'm renovating a huge sign. 5 boards, 220x25cm, originally they were laquered or stained with wood oil but that's all faded now. The sign is placed near a mountain road, and temps from -30*C to +25 are normal.

I have used oil paint for the milled out letters in the boards, and Im about to go out and sand down the laquer/oil/stain crap with a random orbital disk sander. Was thinking of just throwing on white oil-based "window and doorframe paint".

Question: Do I reaaally need to apply primer first? Its for a non-profit charity, Im broke, and the extra 20 bucks for the primer may be the straw on the donkeys back on this project.
Still, the damn sign gonna be alerting mountain men about the local base of operations and how to contact them. Needs to be readable at least 8-10 years.

tl:dr Can I skip primer when painting oil-based on wood by just laying on 2-3 coats?

>>
>>1086269

>>
>>1086266

you can only service 1 interrupt at a time. there is always a hierarchy, so an interrupt with a higher ranking will interrupt a lower-ranking one, unless the lower-ranking one is able to switch off other interrupts.
>>
>>1086013
I think those are either VERY old or it really did mean milli farad. They don't look too big for a cap that size, considering its only rated 25 volts
>>
>>1086266
You can have three interrupts in the same program but all three won't actually be able to run at the same time. Say the timer triggers and while code is still executing the pin triggers. I'm not certain but you may skip that pin interrupt. The important thing is to keep interrupt code as brief as possible.

i like the industrial air because its twice the capacity with a tiny bit more cfm but its almost $200 more and i dont like the horizontal form.
the california tools is nice because its super quiet while still giving good specs but i wish it had a larger tank and just a little bit better output but its very cheap for what it is (imo) and i would prefer a vertical form.

Why the fuck isn't open source building a thing for rural or 3rd world communities. The guy even has plans for an aluminum extruder.

https://youtu.be/t2tVeqK9ExQ

https://youtu.be/We28A3OuKd8
>>
>>1087279
Your best bet would be a 110-220 volt transformer, just make sure the power and current ratings are appropriate for the application. 8-10 amps at 220 would be 16-20 at 110, so that might throw the breaker on a home circuit. V1/V2 = A2 / A1
>>1087285
If I had to guess, a large part of that is due to the access to information not being readily available in the third world. Aluminum is probably much more expensive to build with than bricks made from mud and optionally upcycled plastics.
As far as rural communities go, a lot of people don't want to live in a suburb or a city, which is why they are in a rural area to begin with.

since it works, you should definitely do that. it could be the manufacturer wants to force you to use their particular charger so they created this particularity for it. or if could be a dirty pin. if you have contact cleaner, spray both male and female connectors. otherwise, rub the surfaces with a pin to get rid of oxidation. in a normal USB charger, only pins 1 and 5 would be used.

Today I wanted to start my tractor from 1968, but the battery was empty (voltage droppen from 11.8 V to 3.6V when trying to Engage the startengine)

Now I have the battery attached to a charger, the meter says it's charging with 1 A, the battery is a 12v 60ah calcium battery, internet claims that with calcium batterys you have to charge with 10% of the amps (6A in This case). The battery isn't getting hot. But is everything going okay? Or is the battery dead?

The charger is going to stop by itself, so i'll Let it charge for tonight and see how much amps it is still feeding in to the battery next morning.
>>
>>1087662
thought about that. I'll just have to know when to stop so they don't throw me off the plane. Expensive trip, can't risk it!
>>
>>1087673
How easily can you fall asleep in a car? If pretty easy 2 should be plenty. In any case drink the 2 in a half hour and call it good. If an overseas 9hour flight maybe have 3.

Unless your a beligerant drunk then maybe abstain.
>>
>>1087672
That's low as fuck, may not even recognize it and have to be piggy backed. Just take a good battery and hook it in parallel so the charger sees high enough voltage and starts charging. I had to do this the other day with one of my little sealed lead acid batteries, it was down to 6v and the charger wouldn't charge it. After a day of charging in parallel it's completely recovered.
>>
>>1087672
Also check the water level if it's serviceable

2 hour overseas flight:) I can fall asleep in a car pretty good, but I'm nervous about the motion sickness, so I may have difficulty falling asleep. Maybe if I go short on sleep the night before and add alcohol. zzzz
>>
>>1087676
It was 3,6 V while under Load, it went back to 9 V when I stopped trying to start the engine.
>>1087679
It's a non-service battery

>oh hey I'm in Paris.

>>1087691

none of that garbage, just motion sickness. It's a short flight so that makes me feel better

How are coveralls (for technicians) supposed to fit?

The ones I have now fit just about right with enough room for my clothes, but there's resistance in my shoulder whenever I lift my arm above my head.
I've tried on one size larger which solved that problem but it was baggy (like pic related) and I'm worried it might interfere with whatever I'm doing.
>>
>>1087683
It should go from like 12.5 to 10 while cranking then back up to 12+, voltage that low means it has no amps to give. You should a CCA tester to make sure it can actually provide the required amps to crank if you still have difficulty after a charge. Either way if you can confirm it is actually charging just let it be for a day and it should be just fine. Also 1 amp charging will be slow but just fine. You can go under the rate but not over (at least not for a long period). Also if you do decide to test it make sure you wait 1-2 hours after you take it off the charger to allow the residual from the charger to dissipate to get an accurate reading.
>>
>>1087682 Drink shit load of ginger tea or ginger extract pills. (eliminates motion sickness), then drop a Valium and pass out one time

wood from home depot is cheap. depends on the wood ultimately, but if you don't care then it won't matter much. Try to go for something harder as it'll be rattled a bit if it's on a bike and need some sturdy support.

a saw, personally I'd use a skil saw. but it's mostly up to preference as long as it cuts decently straight.

exterior-wise looks like you'll need some small hinges (art stores usually have these, if not in bags - on little wood boxes) and therefore a screwdriver and a drill for some holes to attach them.

string apparently

I'd keep some wood glue around for those inner corner pieces, as they look stuck together wth it rather than nailed together. If you use nails just use a dremel tool to file them down.

A lot of the interior things don't look necessary. Like the double-latches where it would close similar to a breif case. You probably only need one desu.

I'm unsure how it's attached to the bike, but if it's not snug in there with glue you can screw it in. you'll need a drill with some metal-use bits (coincidentally work on wood as well; pic related) and some screws. check that they aren't drywall screws and they don't really need to be very big.

So I'm thinking to take on a little project where I replace essentially all the plastic parts of a toy with die cast metal equivalents (amongst a bunch of other added features/improvements that I won't go into detail).

The solution I thought of would be to make a plaster mold of each plastic part, then pour molten metal into said mold.

Would a plaster mold hold up to molten metal? Should I be concerned as to what type of mold material I use? Or should I be going about this differently?

I've never actually worked with molten metal so I might be biting off too much for me to chew.

I guess I am fucking retarded and cant figure this out

How do I use a T bevel tool to measure a bevel rip cut down the length of a 2x4?

I need to hang a door in an uneven doorway.
Left side is square to itself, right side is square to itself. The two sides are not square to each other.

I want to bevel cut a 2x4 to the correct angle and nail it to the left side. The door will be mounted to the beveled piece of wood and it will be square enough to work. I figure I have a table saw and itll be a little nicer than just shimming a piece of wood to the right angle. Im just too stupid to figure it out. My test cuts are way off.

Kinda wish I could have my own thread for this but FINE, I'll play by the rules.
There are three caravans an hour and a half's drive away from my house.
The rubber of the tires has perished on all of them.
There is a tire repair place an hour away from the caravans, but in the wrong direction.
I have two trailers at home, both have a good set of wheels.
I wanna know how I can get one of the caravans home in the least number of trips.
First thought was go up (1.5 hours), remove wheels, go home (1.5 h), get a tire place to fix them up, go back (1.5h), reinstall wheels, drive home (1.5 h).

A friend has now suggested just pulling the wheels off some of my trailers at home, so, if the wheels fitted on one of the caravans, we'd only need to do one trip, but we'd need to know what types of wheels the caravan uses to be safe first.

Any flaws you guys can see in my plan?
I'll answer questions in this thread till I get an answer.

I don't doubt it being fun, but where would I even get access to a 3D scanner? This is just a little hobby project, I don't intend to sink a bunch of money into a 3D scanner+printer now.

Is there a plaster material that would withstand molten metal? I stumbled on this video;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9UwQ6MR00o
He's essentially doing what I want to do except with a mushroom. I figure I can make a 2 piece mold so that I can take the plastic piece out before pouring metal into said mold. Question is, what kind of plaster is he using? Or is it more dependent on how much plaster you use to encase the object (larger volume to help with heat dissipation)?

under coats are only needed for bare wood.
the only possible difficulty is the paint wont stick properly on a smooth surface, which would mean some sanding is needed. you figure this out by trial and error: do a small spot underneath, and see if it holds up.

personally i wouldnt paint at all, it ruins the aesthetics of a wood (or wood-like) desk. i'd just apply stain to the scuffed areas. there's even markers made for this.

G1 = Gear fixed to black ring
G2 = Free spinning gear
G3 = Gear fixed to red circle

You'd want to place these gears above or below your ring and circle, and how you implement the gears will depend heavily on what exactly you're trying to do. I'm simply assuming your black ring is the source of your mechanical power.

Furthermore you can change the size of the gears if you want to give the red circle a certain speed or torque. Play with the gear ratios (number of teeth on the input gear vs number of teeth on the output gear). A 2:1 gear ratio would yield a slower spinning gear at the output and a 1:2 gear ration would yield a faster spinning gear at the output.

I'm repainting a bedroom, which I've never done before. The previous owner of the house painted it and did about as good a job as Michael J Fox. The got paint all over the already painted trim. It's a horrible orange color on top of white on the door trim, molding, etc. Naturally I can't color match because I wasn't the original painter and I can't exactly take my trim to Home Depot or some shit to get it color matched.

So, how the fuck do I get that awful orange off of my trim without removing the white paint? I'm thinking careful application of a coarse-medium sandpaper, but I'm not sure on that. Ideas?
>>
>>1089752
Painting the trim after removing what I assume is a runny gloopy buildup of orange is probably a best bet. Sandpaper, maybe 100-150 grit would probably be careful but go slow and with the grain of the wood. When you buy white paint consider the tone, is the other trim white, creme, ivory, ultra white, etc. Then paint all of the trim in the area (spot treating doesnt work out great because the other paint could be dirty/faded, etc). Invest in a decent brusg and decent paint maybe behr and expect to pay like $20 on a nice brush maybe 2.5 in wide with a 45 degree slant on the bristles to paint accurately and not run into the wall, and/or use tap. I hope this helps.

I have a barn that floods when it rains. Originally I dug a ditch where the gutters empty and then a long trench leading to a small pond. Problem is the water doesn't flow fast enough to empty out the ditch if it rains too much. Part of this is because of the massive amount of water coming off the roof, but I suspect that some water is flowing down hill from the adjacent property and accumulating in my property as well.

Over the past few years the ditch wasnt really maintained. It filled up with grass and mud and so I dug it out this summer. To make it look nicer, I reinforced the sides of the ditch with boards connected together hoping to force the water to flow in one direction but after a heavy rain the water basically pushes the boards out.

I dont know much about anything, and I was basically just doing what I thought looked like what a drain should look like.

does anyone have any resources for this kind of thing? Like do I need a minimum amount of elevation change over distance, does the ditch need to be certain width to properly? Is there some kind of mathmatical formula I could use to calculate these things?
>>
>>1089758
Well, I guess that means good news and bad news for me.

Good news is that's pretty much what I had figured I'd need to do.

Bad news is that means I need to actually do that and hope I can get a paint match. Although, all of the goopy dry paint is on the sides and top of the trim, so it doesn't have to be perfect. Just close enough.

Thanks, anon. I appreciate you.

I'll tell this story on here and I'll tell it again: my basement would flood if it would so much as sprinkle. My house is a rectangle and had 4 downspouts, one at each corner. I had a few foundation guys come out and every one of them said I would need a sump pump. Faced with dropping $3k on such a system, I decided to see if I couldn't solve it myself. And I did.

I discovered the extension from the downspout had essentially disintegrated a few feet away from the foundation. Pulled it out, installed a new 20 foot section, and buried it going away and down hill from the house. Since then? Not a single fucking drop in my basement.

These foundation experts were ready to sell me a $3,000 fix when it really only took $20 in material and about 3 hours in labor.

Install the downspout extension and monitor the install during a few rains. If all is well, bury it making sure to maintain a constant downhill grade.

Well if your car is broken don't take it to an airfield because they will only try to sell you a plane.
Check your friendly local government website for building regulations relating to storm drainage which will tell you how to work out everything down to the diameter of your gutters.
Check underground pipe diameter and fall (I think its typically 1/100 for storm) to give you an idea. If you don't want to keep dredging a gulley then put a proper pipe in
>>
>>1090178

They were foundation experts. They did everything from carbon fiber repairs to sump pumps to French drains to downspouts. They should have known to check that first.

So what the fuck is happening here.

Just when I think I understand house wiring I come across something fucked up.

I have two armored cables 12-3 coming into an outlet box. Browns are just twisted together. Good so far. Ground is coming from the armor okay. Red is on the hot side of the outlet. White is.... hot too? What the actual fuck?

Did someone install something in series here? What could possibly be the explanation for this bullshit?

I threw breakers until I killed power to the outlet across the pins, and started working, and then it started sparking because apparently there's a separate circuit wired into it.

What the hell is going on. It's been like this for years apparently, I just bought this house.
>>
>>1090224
Does the outlet work to power stuff?
>>
>>1090299

>>
>>1090299
>>1090307
If I turn the breaker back on, it looks like 120v across the outlet like it should.

With the breaker off, it's 0v across... but that 0v across the outlet is 120v to ground on both sides. I figured this out when it was sparking while I was working on it!
>>
>>1090309
I'm guessing here but maybe the breaker is wired wrong or only one of the wires leading to the outlet is having the circuit broken, but that wouldn't be it if both have a voltage when the circuit is broken. I think your breaker is shorting the outlet but I could be wrong

>>1090550
Nah, I figured it out, I'm dumb.

The gfci breakers take a neutral of course.

Then the voltage on the outlet was just me being... Tired.... I guess. I swear I flipped the breaker off and had no voltage. The voltage is just the neutral for my lights being energized because the hot wasn't actually turned off.

It's just weird because id swear up and down I flipped breakers until the outlet was dead, but still had sparks and voltage. I remember being pissed i was working in the dark.

The 10v outlet is just induced voltage in a switched outlet.

What are some tools i might need when it comes to repair computers?

Phillips screwdriver, canned air, isopropyl alcohol, what else?

Would this screwdriver set be enough?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008TM1910/

Or this?

https://www.amazon.com.mx/dp/B000NPZ3J0/

Reminder that the prices are in pesos.
Both are $7-8.
>>
>>1090937
In my experience you only need 3 sizes of screwdriver for computer repair. Anytime you start getting weird screw sizes or types it means you are opening up individual components, and that rarely pans out. Canned air is handy if you are going to the computers location. If it is coming to you I would invest in a decent air little compressor if you expect to be doing a lot of work. I've never had to use isopropyl alcohol for anything.

If you plan on working on Macs or certain laptop you will need the special tools required to open their cases.

if you pay for it in full up front there really aren't that many steps. you should definitely cover your ass thou and make sure the land has been surveyed and the title is clear

the reason there are no Youtube videos on removing tiles intact is that it cant be done. tiles are removed either with a hammer and chisel or this scary machine that shreds tiles like they were leaves.

you need the services of a notary to handle all the legal stuff. they'll make sure all paperwork is completed and in order, and even handle your payment to the seller.
they dont work for free, tho, so call for an estimate.

to make a desk stable you need to fix it at 4 diagonal points. you can either use a metal cross-brace, or a wood plank, like the one in the Ikea picture, but taller, like 16-inches tall.

Make your offer
Pay earnest cash to sellers escrow if offer is accepted. ( a % of the total amount for the house is held by an escrow service to pull the house off the market. If the deal falls through becase the buyer backs out the seller keeps the earnest money, if the deal fails because the seller backs out or the house fails inspection or title search the buyers money is returned.)
Have real-estate lawyer draft contract
Have boundary lines surveyed
Have title history searched
Have inspection done
Based on the inspections renegotiate price or repair deductions.
In some places you will also need a city inspection for habitation.
Once everything is agreed upon the balance is paid as stipulated in the contracts.

tl;dr intra-device power transmission suggestions
sorry for this shitpost, but wanted to make sure i didnt miss any details.

Trying to power about 25 custom high-power LED fixtures (20x10watt LEDs per) with 12v bucked from US 110v mains.
Each chandelier is about 8 ft apart.
Should I run 110v to each fixtures, buck down to 12v?
Or should make like 4 high-power buck converters from 110v to 12v and power like 5 of them at once? (saves money, not buying 20 individual buck converters)
Or is there another solution?

1. Independent modular fixtures:
Less downtime for repairs, costly.
total cost: $720
or
2. Paired power sources:
4x800w high-power buck converters
Larger downtime for repairs, cheaper.
total cost: $580

Background:
Installation is permanent for foreseeable future.
For multi-room music venue.
Currently using incandescent bulbs, they prefer excessively warm 2800k color.
Tried out dimmable CFLs, requiring replacement $3,000 industrial dimmer pack.
The idea is to lower cost of electricity. Currently using 25 fixtures with 8x40watt incandescent. (8kw) LEDs would only be 5kw.
Plus I have a quote for cheap RGB LEDS, which would be neat.

Yes and yes.

I'm planning on making a small lamp out of various shit I have laying around as a /diy/ gift, but I don't actually know shit about electricity which is always a fun combo. I have a dimmer dial switch from a table lamp (pic related) but the cable it's on takes 110v straight from the wall, and I want to use it for a small bulb instead of a regular one.

Which incandescent bulb+socket combo can fit in a 1 to 1&3/8 inch radius dome (without protruding) that will give the most brightness at that tiny size?
Would a dimmer switch taken from a normal table lamp even work properly with such a small bulb?

I can't just connect the wire directly to the small bulb, can I? I absolutely need something to bring the voltage down to whatever the bulb is rated at, right?
>>
>>1091273
As mentioned before cheap projectors are crap.

Their light output is way to low, the colours are shit, the resolution is bad and they are loud as fuck.

Entry level starts at ~400$, but I would suggest getting a good projector from example Sony for >2000$ cause those projectors offer a great picture and are pretty silent.

you can get tiny 3W led bulbs operating at 12V AC or DC. you'll probably have to solder the wires to it unless you get an appropriate connector, like the ones used on MR12 halogen bulbs. for the transformer (or wall-wart), it has to be an old-school iron-core heavy transformer, with 12Vac (or DC) at 500mA output, not a switching-type wall-wart, the ones that weigh almost nothing.

anyone use Adobe Indesign? I've got to do a project for school that includes about 8 pages (IIRC). I've only done very basic stuff (place images, text, etc). The project is to include some of my artwork and text related to it, it's a small portfolio) I'm just not sure if I need a specific theme or how I would go about it. Just looking for personal experience/tips/etc on how to make a good looking piece. Thanks

wow post your actual shit otherwise you have basically said nothing
>>
>>1092018
just use an oil based primer/undercoat since the acrylic ones are water based. beyond that use what you like
>>
>>1092047
what more do you need to know? It's a portfolio showcasing my work with some text...would you like to see the work and the text? Aside from that I'm not sure what other information you would need.
>>
>>1092073
i dont know what you are asking

what do you want to ask?

tfw I thought it was a spark plug for a second
>>
>>1092073
What kind of work? what do you mean by theme? This all sounds very specific to your class.
None of us are in your class.
>>
>>1092085
oh ok fair enough:) My portfolio will include approx 4-5 pieces from screen printing, sculpture, and images generated in photoshop/illustrator.

as far as theme goes, I didn't know if most people doing this sort of thing used a recurring theme throughout their design.

Here's the assignment:

You will be creating a personalized promotional catalog with your name, images of your work, text, and a
graphic theme. Your work can include any artwork or design you have done in the past, as well as any and all
of the assignments and projects you have created in this class.
The goal of the cataglogue is to be professional as well as creative. Your audience will be professionals
interested in your art and design work so represent yourself with a professional theme that refelcts your
creative abilities.
You will create this catalogue using InDesign (ID). By completing this project you will be introduced to InDesign
and learn to import Photoshop AND Illustrator graphics into your InDesign documents.
Your design must contain a minimum of 8 pages (sides); think about the layout, type, and your images and
how all of these elements work together with a consistent theme. (You can have more than 8 pages but you
have to work in increments of 4. ie 8, 12, 16, 20 pages)
Your design must contain a minimum of 75 words as text. Text can be used in various ways including image
captions, artist statement, short biography, resume items, descriptions of projects.
We will work with the online printing service MagCloud to upload our completed files for good quality, inexpensive
prints of our catalogue. (MagCloud charges $.20 per page plus around $3.60 shipping)
This is a portfolio of your work, so you may chose to feature your art (paintings, glass, design, photography,
etc.). If you want to, you may include all of your projects that were done beyond the basic exercises

oh and some criteria: (sorry the formatting was lost in translation, it was much neater on my pdf)

theme:
professional
consistent
creative
neat
text - type choices, visual hiearchy, scale, alignment, spacing
images - quality, scale, display, alignment, spacing

compositions:
balanced - margins and negative space
space - effective use of space for images and text
consistent

development:
evidence of time spent
revised over time
corrections made for neatness and precision

completion:
printed and presented for critique
consistent use of visual elements - text, image, layout, color, texture
>>
>>1092098
>>1092100

so you have learnt nothing, and expects us to tell you how to literally do a piece of homework?

even the "criteria" literally says what you should do already?

fuck right off.

There is a great stuff door and window. Use that it wont push the window out of plum.
>>
>>1092111
checked. i know HOW to use the program, but I can't find anything all that exciting within it. All I'm asking for is some advice on the project because right now I'm at: insert images and text, print, done.
>unexciting
>>
>>1092174
Not every piece of homework is meant to be "exciting".
>>
>>1092174

you need to go look for ID tutorials on Youtube and when you find one you like, copy the shit out of it. inspiration is hard, copying is easy. just pray some of the other students dont copy the same one as you.

>Running a laser pointer 24/7

How long until it burns out? Just a $10 purple laser, runs on 2xAAA

My neighbour has solar Christmas lights and leaves them on strobe just outside my bedroom window. They only turn on when it's dark enough so I thought I'd try pointing my laser pointer at it and it turns it off.

I can easily hook it up to a constant 3V it needs and I have a ladder with a camera tripod swivel on it so positioning it should be easy too.

>Just ask him to turn them off
Crippling social anxiety, can hardly talk to my neighbours, I'll get a laugh out of it.

Isn't that simple. Maybe the light detector needs infrared? Maybe ultraviolet? Maybe some other specific light spectrum?

Just sanded down my Hammarp butcher block with 180 grade sand paper, took about 40 minutes. I've wiped off the excess with a damp cloth. I'm going to apply boiled linseed oil.

How can I test to ensure I've got a surface ready to be oiled? Should I use a brush or is a cloth acceptable?

Foot and shoe odor. I wash my feet daily and make sure they're dry before putting my shoes on, but my god after a couple hours my socks and shoes are sweaty. Man do my shoes and boots stink! Is there something I can do as far as hygiene goes to keep my feet "cleaner"? How about some socks that would do a better job of absorbing moisture? Anything I can put in my shoes/boots at night to absorb the odors? It's really awful.

I've tried baking soda in the past, but even after shaking the excess out, it still made my feet feel cold and made them sweat even more. At one point I took my shoe off and could peel the skin quite easily. Sorry it's gross, but I'm out of options and thinking about cutting my damn feet off.
>>
>>1092428
It is that simple. Read the post again. I've already tried it and it works.
It's a purple laser so if it does need UV then it's covered.
>>
>>1092615

at least 2 diyer's have tried electrocuting their hands and feet to control sweating, and claimed success. there's even a scientific basis for it, google ''Safe control of palmoplantar hyperhidrosis with direct electrical current"

also google for DIY instructions: it involves essentially a 12V power supply, two aluminum plates, salt, vaseline, and 20 minutes of treatment.

i would add a lamp in series with the power supply so you dont have to worry about the two plates touching.

Have you seen the "CREE (C) 2013" on the lower part of this thing?

That's a copyright, not necessary a date of manufacture.

thats the design date, not manufacture date.

Pine, whatever you can find that's cheap.
Stay away from MDF and particle boards. They're just dust glued together.

I'm interested in picking up a benchtop metal lathe. I'm just beginning my research on them, but do you guys have any tips on things I should keep an eye out for or avoid, and good brands to check out? I really only know of Grizzly. Right now for the few things I know I want to do on it, I think http://www.grizzly.com/products/7-X-14-Variable-Speed-Benchtop-Lathe/G0765 would be fine for me, but it's obviously better to buy the size I'd need now, rather than having to upgrade in the future, or if there's something horribly wrong with that one that should preclude getting it.

Any electricians know why on one of my power outlets the switch is backwards? (Colour showing means its off and vice versa) How do i go about fixing it?

My best guess is you disconnect the switch in one position flip it, and reconnect.

PVC and a laser cutter?
Plywood and a stencil?
>>
I replaced the screen on my phone, and it gets phantom touches now. I know that it's a grounding issue of some sort probably, but how do I even begin to look for the origin of this issue?
>>
>>1092916
stuff like this is either PVC as one anon said or could be a form of pressed fiber board painted white then the design painted on top of that.

combustion engines are essentially air pumps.

lower blowers are air pumps.

why isn't the exhaust from the blowers engine routed into the working air stream?
>>
>>1092847
you always want screwcutting. always.

you probably want a quick change toolpost and a quick change gearbox and a speed-controllable motor. you might not want to pay the significant extra cost right now, but in the future you'll be glad.

if you're using very small drills in a very small lathe, you'll want a lever action tailstock.

if you manage to min-max yourself up to a lathe the size of a compact car, make sure you get one with power crossfeed.

i want to make an exhaust fan/pump for my propane forge so i can use it inside my garage without dying as it is fucking -30 outside. it gets over 2000* inside as it can melt copper so will some aluminum dryer hose be able to handle the heat of the exhaust? it wont be directly attached, itll be hung 2-3 feet over it with some sort of sheet steel cone to provide a wider suction area. the harder part is what do i use to provide enough suction to suck up all of the exhaust and smoke that can withstand several hundred if not over 1000* for extended periods. any ideas?

Anyone have suggestions on a cheap router and possibly table?

I would be using it to make wooden swords and shields and the occasional detail on cabinets. So I don't think it would need to be anything major as it would largely be getting fed white wood and MDF. It would just need to be able to make a nice even bevel.
