How many of you jerry rigged something with safety wire for a project? Let's hear them!
>>1081950
theres a briggs engine somewhere around here with a hole drilled through a connecting rod bolt and safety wired to another bolt on the oil splasher thing. i forgot why i did it
>>1081976
Perhaps you didn't want the bolt to the oil dump thing falling out?
>>1082064
oil sump*** my bad
>>1081950
this is actually common practice with the BMW m52 engine for the oil pump sprocket
thay have a bad habit of spinning off and staving the engine, particulrly the rear main and cylinder 5 and 6 rotating group, shit goes bad from ther
>>1082354
That's some nice ass safety wire
Was in the AF i used to SW the shit out of the aircraft engines just tp make them fly ready. Nothing bad every happened but i was the shit out safety wire.
>>1082354
Looks good. I think I should safety wire my motorcycle just because.
>>1081950
Idiot who has apparently been living under a rock.
Just what is safety wire, and why do I need it?
>>1082971
If you look at OP's picture, those bolts are unable to turn leftwards due to the wire, which means they can't shake loose.

For some applications 12 is max (specific tech data trumps general tech data), but IMO that one is overtwisted or borderline. Former USAF engine mech, crew chief and avionics puke here (crosstraining is fun!) who is used to eight tpi.
AC for reference and inspiration to noobs. Lots of good info lives here. Page 7-19 deals with safety wiring.

I've even seen an Australian reference to eleven!
We used that shit all the time on the race cars. Nose wing drooping? Safety wire. Top wing flappy? Safety wire. Kickoff bar bolts backing out? You guessed it, safety wire. Safety wire and zip ties, the racers friend.

It is a left handed thread? cause if no it's pulling loose that nut
>>1081950
I rigged some swiss M2s.
>>1083139
What about duct tape?
>>1083140
its is
sudden engine deceleration and a lighter flywheel causes vibration which for some fucking reason causes them to fuck off
The manual for the helos I work on says no more than 12 twists an inch on safety wire. the funny thing is, is that I never heard of safety wire until I starting working on the birds. Very important, and I love trying to show off the skillz.
