This is a lathe screw on faceplate that came in a box of parts when I bought my ShopSmith. I don't have a head end adapter for this faceplate but it would be nice to turn bowls. Any idea what the threading is on this? No one in maintenance at my work knows.
ID is about an inch.
Yup, that's crossthreaded.
NEways congrats on your purchase. Shopsmiths are more fun than a barrel full of monkeys.

Are you sure? I dont have a picture of it, but there is a second one that is exactly the same
>>1081018
it looks too clean to be crossthreaded... but all the shopsmith faceplates seem to be 1"-8tpi
wtf. its like they cut it right once then another time 1/2 thread off on the lathe

Looks like a multi start thread, OP. Milk jugs are multi start threads. I'm not familiar with a shopsmith... Does it thread on the headstock okay?
>>1081037
I don't have the right adapter - that's why I'm here. The threading that I do have is 1/2-20 - which is about half the diameter of the hole in this.
Shopsmith for when you always want the wrong tool for the job.
>>1081018
No way. Far too clean.
My money would be on that was cast with a staggered thread. Why, I don't know, there will be some reasoning behind it but that's now how crossed threads look.
>>1081051
Ah, there's an adapter. Did you try googling shopsmith headstock adapter? I'd make sure wherever you get it from will take returns.
>>1081037
You should be able to see all the threads on a multi start thread.
>>1081037
multi start threads all go in the same direction
>>1080992
That's normal for the ShopSmith.
IIRC, you can thread them on either way, for when you swap from the spindle to the tail.
>>1080992
Why does this confuse me so much? I can't visualize it going on.
>>1083035
The threads don't go all the way around the inside of the hole. That help a little?
OP here. I'm bringing a 1 inch 8 tpi bolt home to test it on the thing when I get home.
Sure is strange. I'll let you guys know.
>>1081338
This guy seems to have the right answer. Thanks man.
OP here. Yep. Works with 1" 8 tpi bolt.
Looks like it's been threaded with a fucked up tap

>IIRC, you can thread them on either way, for when you swap from the spindle to the tail.
Thats neat
>>1085190
what kind of tap makes this thread?
>>1085193
A thread cutting tap
>>1080992
Probably subtle differences in the bit that goes in there so you can spin it either way. Rightie tightie, leftie flies across the shop.
