Has anyone ever build a realistic artificial window for a basement like pic related? Could you set it to a day and night cycle?
>>
>>1079943
No, but doesn't look too hard... a box on a window with a light diffuser and some high quality rgb leds could get you any color or shade of white you wanted.

>>1079943
What about a light pipe/sun tunnel to let real light in?
>>
>>1080713
What if he's 100 feet underground?

All jokes aside, the fake sunlight idea would be cheaper and easier unless he has to dig to install the window anyways.

Who has a basement 100ft underground?

I've checked out both >>1080713 and >>1080929

Sadly no one makes long enough fiber cables for lamp solutions (they are not like normal fiber network cables). The longest were 150 feet, made by a South Korean company.

The Coelux is $3000 to $4000 per sqm, depending on how much you buy. Bit steep for just some leds and panels. It needs to come down in pricing or get pirated by the Chinese :P

But I'm all ears if anyone knows of some other solutions (the lcd window ones are all pretty bad).

Just link the texture of your ceiling to a skybox. Easy as that.

Op you can make "natural" color leds by mixing 3000k and 6000k leds alternating

Get some dimmable ones and set the dimmer up to a stepper motor to an Arduino and do a day night cycle where peak brightness would be at solar noon. That would be easiest but more expensive than just programming the dimmable ones

Additionally you could put the 6000k and 3000k leds on a different circuit and add some yellow orange and red leds to simulate sun up and sun down

If you are willing to have a larger budget you could even stimulate a sun by arcing leds across the ceiling

high CRI leds <---this will look very nice even if just used as ceiling light or bouncing off the wall

Batman?
>>
>>1081025

As >>1081052 mentioned, high-CRI LEDs are probably what you're looking for. There are fluorescent lamps with impressive CRIs, as well, which will be substantially cheaper at the outset (and, currently, usually last long enough that LEDs never really even catch up in savings over time), but, of course, that would get you high noon daylight appearance only.

Sticking some good RGB LEDs and a microcontroller behind a diffuser and curtain would give you an excellent facsimile of the normal day/night light cycle. Wouldn't even be too hard. Hell, I'd do it myself if insurance companies (and possibly electrical code) didn't throw a hissy fit over plugging equipment that isn't UL listed into the wall or, worse, installation as a permanent fixture. No idea if anyone makes (decent) commercial artificial LED windows for a reasonable price, unfortunately.
>>
another stupid but works solution is just get tons of screens and play dvds of clouds in the sky, you can even edit or find some footage that will mimic a 24 hour cycle, etc, if anything just pick a solid color and have it fade to orange and then black

i will admit it will look stupid but it will achieve all those things easily

That's cool, could make one of those aperture science signs.
>>
>>1081469
that meme is long dead in my opinion, also overly done, tons of examples done using led strips behind a sheet of acrylic or something similar
>>
>>1081047
I've once mixed 2700K and 6000K LEDs to make a panel. The result is not really a 4600K light but more a greeny white. It's may look negligeable but all the shadows turn green especially in photos.
>>
>>1081555
My favorite color is green so I don't see that as a negative
>>
>>1081485
But they all look like shit. Also i'm pretty sure they will release a new portal with HL3, or maybe a new TF.
