dont see one in the catalog, so post the projects you're working on and how theyre coming along!

currently working on the prototype/proof of concept for my inverter generator using a lightly modified predator 212, a $160 200 amp alternator i scored for $30, and a 1500 watt cheapo inverter.

heres a video of it running unloaded. i may need to step up the engine size because when i put it under very high load (at least 150 amps pulled by the inverter) it bogs the engine super hard even at wide open throttle to the point where it bent the brackets and shredded the belt because of the misalignment.

I'm almost done my 88 square foot LED wall project. All eleven panels are "built", but now I've got to turn each of them on and spend an hour or two debugging any bad soldering, defective ICs, etc. I also need to finish the programming to control through WIFI and mount the difuser panels.

Thanks mate. Still needs a lot of work and won't be nearly as efficient or cost effective as a regular generator unfortunately, but fuck it at least I can say i made it myself

Looks cool, ive considered making something similar. Can jump start cars, keep cars/caravans charged during events, 110v generator with an invertor. Many possible uses, the challenge is making it portable
>>
>>1080719
>>1080817
so far all ive done is make some brackets i welded with angle iron to replace the flimsy ass framing ones that bent over when it came under high load, so far they work so much better and dont start torquing under high load. i bungee strapped it to an old luggage roller thing to make it just easier enough to roll outside. unfortunately im low on cash right now so the final product will have to wait for a bit, as well as the fact that my modsine inverter wont run my house heater so id have to make or buy at least a 1000w pure sine one which is another $~150 bucks. but as is, it runs perfectly fine bolted to the wooden board with the modsine inverter to power my tv or fridge or whatever when the power goes out.
>>
>>1080839
i think if i really want to continue with the project im gonna just buy that 10000 watt generator head from harbor freight. probably the most cost effective method (300 bucks, only 3c per watt vs ~13c for a pure sine inverter) and i can probably still run it with my 7hp engine since i doubt i would be running more than 1500 watts with it (requires 13hp under full load)
>>
>>1080759
I thought so, I felt like those nicely traced homemade pcbs looked familiar.
What are the microswitches for?
>>
>>1080841
not to mention the huge efficiency gain to cutting the AC-DC-DC-AC setup, you get about 40% total loss with the correct pulley setup compared to 80% loss with your current setup(hence why the engine is bogging just trying to pull 1kW from the inverter).

with the proper generator head you'll also want an electronic rippum controller/governor to keep the AVR happy, soon as you're outside the 60Hz range by 2Hz +/- it'll start throttling the max output current.
>>
>>1080863
yeah i would probably just re govern the engine because it maxes at 3800 from the factory but it was removed because it was intended for a kart. i would just put the governor in and do a 1:1.05/1.06 pulley ratio to keep it at a constant 3600 at the generator so i can just keep the throttle wide open instead of having to do anything electronical.
>>
I'm not sure if this is the right board to ask about this but I figured I'd ask in here rather than make a new thread.

I have a university project where I'm writing a game (tetris clone) in ARM assembly. It's running on a bare Raspberry Pi with no operating system and we're controlling it with an SNES controller over GPIO.

I was curious about adding sound to my project and it seems like the easiest way would be to use a sound chip like the old school consoles sound to do. Does anyone here have any resources on getting started with sound chips?

Two switches select audio from mic or external wire. The other six are read by the microcontroller. One sets if it's running standalone or networked. In networked the remaining switches pick the IP address. In standalone the remaining switches pick a pattern generated in firmware.

I'm looking into how bicycle frames are made. I guess I could make motorized bicycles for spare cash. Too many people don't have motor transportation anyways. Plus it would teach me skills to make a hoverbike. I want one so bad. Also the metalwork skills would help me assemble a jetpack. Hobby turbines are getting good and one guy made a jetpack with great hover time.

I'm designing a working model of the clock tower in Majora's mask. I've always loved clocks and I've always wanted the clock from MM since it's one of my favorite games

I already have my gear trains calculated and spent my lunch at work modeling the minute ring train with solidworks . I'm thinking I have a cam design that will open the door under the clock when it strikes 12, but it needs some work still. That and I need to work out how to rotate the dial from day to night simply. I've even thought about it having it play a snippet of the clock town theme at every hour with it playing the other 2 sped up versions the closer it gets to midnight. But I'd like to focus on it working before I add any cosmetic add ons

I'll post pics of the cad drawing once it's finished and the final product once it's made

>I've seen threads with watchmakers in them so if any of you have any general advice/tips it would be appreciated

I'm currently working on a wearable LED VU/Bass-meter. I'm using an nRF51822 and an APA102 LED Strip. Planning to put the IC/module, a DC-DC-converter, a microphone w/ agc-amplifier and some charging-circuitry on a small PCB.

Originally I wanted the phone to give it all the data, but BLE only supports low data rates (at least with 20Byte packets and 150ms per packet on android), so I use the IC to sample a mic, put it through a bass filter (cut-off 200Hz until 300Hz) and then map the leds to the bass-power.

I was surprised how easy it was to write an App for it...

Video if it in action:
https://vid.me/LHZ3

pic related is a development board from ebay I used to play with the BLE IC. I will use a module (mdbt40) ojn the final PCB because designing antennae is annoying and I don't want to source RF decoupling caps...

My hero anon. Building train horns and a propane forge. After christmas... man I hate the holidays. My family is all spread out and the wife's is yuge. I saw my family for 1p minutes then went to three thanksgivingseparate on my wife's side. Fml.

Anyone wanting to build a forge I'd suggest Mr. Rails plans for the burner. Seems pretty legit and affordable. I spent over $200 on a glorified kwikie burner for my foundry. Needs a filer since all the bitch does is plug up. It seems as though propane is master race until I can get a flow meter and tap a gas well.

normally its 140cm x 80cm and if you pull it out its gonna be 240cm x 80cm.
i guess that 240 is long enough for lots of guests, maybe even a LAN party. And 240 is the official size of a beer pong table, wich is nice.

Yeah I find it a bit cathartic to just go fiddle around and make stuff in my spare time.
Sort of going easy myself by using a bit of brass on a vaguely knife shaped object that I'm still kind of figuring out just what to do with it exactly, had this weird daydream about the shape being a bit like an eye of Horus forming a sub-hilt and a long-ish blade hanging off it. So gunna go with that for a while, have some ideas about using ebony on the handle section, tapering out a little longer on the back end and maybe some lapis lazuli inlay as I've got some beads of it I can crush up.

Like using brass, softer and a bit easier to work with when you keep annealing it, rather than constantly fighting the stainless steel which tends to work harden and beat me up. The old SS is a great material as its next to indestructible (plus its cheap!) but its always a battle to get it exactly where you want it.

Found with leg injuries in the past, swimming and cycling arent too bad to reduce impact and still get a bit of cardio going. Problem is always finding a decent pool or somewhere to ride where you aren't gunna end up on someones bumper though. My back is a shredded mess courtesy of being in the military for 10 years and being blown up a couple of times, now I'm a bit more lethargic doing engineering designs, bit of farming and settling down now my adventuring days are over.

I would post in the stupid question thread if this board had one. Can I solder ethernet cables directly to a PCB?

With something similar to that resin you can take it to the car wash after a party. I did a table.

It's like 30 fucking coats of varnish. You can glue pics and shit down and cover them if u like.

I would paint or stain a cool design and cover it. Or maybe soak highlighters in the 2 parts before mixing for blacklight>>1092510
efect. Shit is expensive so do a small test price if u play mad scientist with it.

Right on. That's a badass knife anon. And your sacrifice wasn't made in vein. There are still a lot of us grateful that you fought so we could blue collar and only have the stress of bills. I swim a lot actually as there is a large spring fed pond where I work and I can hop in it whenever. Kinda fat for bikes and 0 impact seems to treat me better. I've considered building a high backed stool near my anvil. Not sure. Glad u mentioned the brass. I've been toying to with the idea of leaving my kwikie burner in the foundry and welding it to the forge. I could then make swords up to 8 feet or longer and with some fire brick or a refractory "plug" I could melt and cast small amounts of brass for handles and pins. I come across a lot of fittings and cheap brass.

Island for a basement "bar"

Cutting tube steel with a portable bandsaw isn't as fun as it seems.

Nah, I'm Australian so my service matters jack shit for the most part :)

Brass should brew up pretty well in a home-foundry as its only about 8-900C to melt and its a nice, stable metal. In a pinch if you know someone with a lot of old rifle cartridges they aren't going to reload (or too fucked to take another round), punch out the primers with a nail, mash them up with a hammer and into the pot. Most of them should be free or very cheap and it wouldn't take too many to get a pretty good sized ingot or two out of them.

I have a thing for gunmetal bronze and that warm-brown lustre it gets that I'd like to use a lot more, but its surprisingly expensive and mostly only in round stock.
Think I vaguely remember where my old ceramic crucible is lurking, my old dad has a lump of bronze I might steal off him since mum took my kiln for doing ceramics and doesn't look to be returning it any time soon

""""""""""""""""brackets"""""""""""""""""
The way that whole fucking thing shakes itself stupid when you first start it up should have been your first clue. Use something more substantial than cardboard for the base, get something better than tinfoil for the brackets, and add a proper tensioner wheel for the belt. I look forward to you getting good, Opie.

I have a project exactly like this going with a smaller predator 79cc engine. Can only get about 50 amps from the alternator though.
