Started doing indoor bike HIIT at home, due to time constraints. Asking if anyone knows how to increase resistance on one of these bikes, beyond what is given on the resistance wheel.

Resistance normally comes in two forms for a rotating object, rolling friction which normally is very low no matter what the surfaces are, or additional weight

Find a way to add mass to your rotating unit and you'll get much more resistance

Additionally if you don't mind a destructive resistance you could install some bike brake calipers to the wheel and use that instead

Add a motor/generator/alternator to it that will generate electricity while you cycle. All you need to do then is to increase the electrical resistance to increase the pedaling resistance. It is extremely effective. Electrical resistance can be lighting up light bulbs, charging batteries ar trying to run something like a toaster or hairdryer, etc.

Speed = volts
Torque = amps
Speed + Torque = watts

If you want to pedal faster, make it so you can produce a higher voltage. If you want to pedal harder make it so you produce more amps. If you want to do both make it so the watts are higher. You can make it really easy to pedal or virtually impossible to pedal depending on the size of generator you install and what amount of electrical resistance you apply.

Good idea

Op, go get a $10 angle grinder from harbor freight and a drive belt. Put an incandescent bulb between the power cord pins, then put the switch set to on permanently

It'll work great

Don't do that, you'll fuck your joints. Spin faster if you want to work more.

Speed * torque = watts
yes it matters

Put some cloth to press against the sides of the wheel and slow it down. Rig up a mechanism like bicycle brakes but with cloth pads

>angle grinder

Wrong type of motor. Use a big permanent magnet motor instead. The angle grinder motor won't give you the proper torque, but it will create electric at high speeds. You can test this by shorting the motor out when the switch is on and it isn't plugged in. Just jump a wire over the plug's terminals. Then spin it with your hand. If it spins nearly freely it won't work for this purpose (though extreme gearing might to some degree). If it is somewhat hard to turn then it may work well. Some motors are almost impossible to turn when shorted in that manner and those are the best for this purpose because they react well to varying electrical resistances. You'll just need to ensure it isn't over heating.

The biggest problem is finding the right motor. Having access to salvaged stuff can be problematic for some people.

No, pedaling faster is what fucks your joints. You need moderate resistance and speed to proper work your body without strain during the course of an average length workout. Stationary bicycles that use air resistance or have nearly no resistance really fuck up your hips.

It has a magnet inside, see picture. The knob tightens the tension cable which brings the magnetic bracket closer to the wheel. The closer the magnetic bracket, the higher the resistance.

Open it up, try to shorten the tension cable to bring the magnetic bracket closer, if possible.
