Mathematicians and Electricians get in here!
>>
So I have a 55 gallon barrel wrapped with approximately 930 feet of a communications wiring. It is 12 strands of 24 gauge wire. I am trying to figure what the approximated gauge all 12 individual strands together would be equivalent to.
>>
I'm a mathematician. Not sure I understand the point of this thread though.

Oh well, have a bump for acknowledging my shitty field.
>>
I am essentially trying to create an emp generator. Can this put out anything significant or is the length of wire too long? Thinking DC power source. Having a hell of a time dealing with voltage drop and the initial figures of what guage 12 24 strands equals.
>>
>>1065161
The ultimate goal is to find Gauss. But I must figure out the wire gauge issue first. Then bring in the other figures.

0000 is the largest for AWG iirc

its approx 12mm in diameter.

the actual gauge is just a stupid measurement system that is confusing. you can google how to get from one gauge to the next. if this had any bearing on mathematics you wouldn't use gauges as anything but approximates.
>>
>>1065172
The idea was to create interest by giving an idea of the scale of the device jerk.

I realize there is a conversion. Of course it doesn't relate directly to a gauge but to the carrying capacity of the wire all total in amps and volts.
>>
>>1065159

Something like a 14 gauge, but your resistance is going to be lower than standard 14g RB.

You bumped a thread off /pol/ for this shit?

how is this related to politics aka how come you haven't been perma-banned yet?

I suffer lyme disease and this will become a pulsed magnetism device. Also for the conspiracy buffs it would disrupt nano materials in the body.. theoretically.
>>
Your biggest problem is going to be supplying enough current to induce an inductive load big enough to cause an emp. Likely what you have will barely take out you own computer, if it's right next to it.
>>
>>1065187
It doesn't have to be powerful. I just want to get my figures correct so I know I am getting a permeating magnetic field.
>>
>>1065188
I'm an electrical engineer, trust me man, your not gonna get this up an running, this guy give some good information.

It doesn't have to emit a high gauss field. Just looking for a small range. It will definitely work. Just need to find a level where I won't fry the wiring.
>>
>>1065191
As they say in Canadia, you're gonna need some skookum parts for your pixies to chooch.
>>
>>1065191
This very same design wrapped around a 5 gallon bucket using 20volts and 5amps was plenty to produce a noticeable field. The design is solid. Getting the figures down is not.
>>
>>1065191
24gauge can't handle much current, just because you have a bunch of it doesn't mean anything. I wouldn't put more then 3 amps down it. You can literally measure the resistance with a meter, but with DC your unlikely to do much.
>>
>>1065160
>imperial
How the fuck do you guys build with measurements like that
>yeehaw I just took 13 gauge of milk with my 45,244832 elbow of cheese, gonna travel 40 boings to my ol house in kentucky luckily my pick-up only burns 45,321838229292919 wet-stacks of gasoline per boing om a chilly day of 9427^218 degrees of farherjohnson
>>
>>1065193
You need to get the wire spec then. The strands are insulated, once you know that it's simple math. All these specs exist. What in gods name are you trying to do with this?
>>
>>1065195
We have spec sheets. Imperial really isn't that bad, engineers usually don't care.
>>
>>1065195
I guess we are just smarter then you and can handle systems that are not just base 10. You are just a retarded kid that makes fun of people for not shitting their pants.

I come here often. Apparently I belong here considering I cannot find the figures necessary to convert 12 24 guage wires down to the carrying capacity of a whole. And apparently neither can anyone else.

Hey, all the wires in the bundle are going to be twisted pairs, so its going to have a balancing effect. You arent going to generate much of an EM field using any data cable.

You need to use single strands.

There are apps to calculate the field of the solenoid you are building.
>>
>>1065203
In other words: Not intelligent enough to figure it out. Like myself.
>>
>>1065202
You should use 10/2 romex or something like that. Data cable isnt a good wire to use for this application.
>>
>>1065204
It should theoretically have the same effect, separated by plastic and twisted or not? Why would it cancel out any field produced.. that doesn't equate.
>>
>>1065200
he didn't even say it was better sensitive stanislas

I know... found a cheap source. My original build was 16g stranded speaker wire on a 5 gallon bucket. Works great.
>>
>>1065209
source?
>>
>>1065207
The twisted pairs are used to reduce the cross talk across the different strands. Itll handle up to 5V per strand, but its like 5mA. The issue is that by twisting the pairs, the aplitude of the occilation wave from AC current wont combine
>>
>>1065210
I understand the $$ limitation. Been there. Fact is, single strand heavy guage is best, speaker wire ok, data cable bordering on useless
>>
>>1065166

It's all about equivalent cross sectional area of copper OP.

I can't find my electricians manual with cross sectional area table in it, but I googled and found this:
http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/awg-wire-gauge-d_731.html

A 24AWG wire has cross sectional area of 0.20mm^2, so 12 of them have 2.4mm^2 which is approximately equivalent to a single 14AWG conductor. A single 14AWG is good for 15A.

If you want to strictly adhere to the electrical code, you'll also need to derate the wires because there are a bunch of them in parallel and they will heat each other which reduces their current carrying capacity. If I understand what you're doing here, the wires will just get a quick pulse of electricity through them so I don't think they'll ever run long enough for heating to become an issue. You'll for sure be able to pull 10A through there. . .
>>
>>1065195
You guys realize that the reason you're on a simpler system is because you have to be, right? Old boy from Kentucky has no problem with imperial, yet Aussies (because you shitpost like one) can't divide by two in fraction form? Damn. Talk about mental gymnastics.
>>
>>1065160
>12 strands of 24 gauge wire
24 gage has a diameter of 0.0201"
area = PI * r^2 = 0.000317

12 of them have an area of 12 *0.000317 = 0.0038

this equates to a radius of SQRT(area/PI) = SQRT(0.0038/PI) = 0.0348 = r

diameter of r*2 = 0.069 = diameter

14 gage has a diameter of 0.064
13 gage has a diameter of 0.072

So. 12 strands of 24 gage wire is equivalant to one strand of wire between 13&14 gage.
>>
>>1065197
I'm an engineer and I care a lot

It's the guys down at the shop who don't know what to do with schematics in metric
>>
>>1065202
24 awg x 12 = 2.4mm^2 so about 16a at 110v over a 10 metre run and 30°C ambient temp

I think this thread is bait, guys.
