How do I make a proper firepit in my backyard? Going to heat up a big caldron the old-fashion way.

clear out some grass or find a spot open and away from trees
rock circle to hold ashes, dig around 1/2 foot down and form a /\ with wood
make two forks like Y---Y then bridge them with metal and hang the pot.
make a fire underneath
dig a pit, make a fire in it

The only thing to be careful with is avoiding river rocks for the ring. Usually, a rock is either impervious enough to water that it doesn't soak in, or porous enough that pressure can't build up, but rocks that sit under water for years can get enough water in tight spots to explode when heated.
Different guy, should I avoid building my fire pit under a power line? Don't intend on having large fires in it, but the center of the section of yard I want to use has a power line over it.
