DIY effects on the opposite sex?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Kinda of a meta-question:
What effects does being a competent DIY-guy have on girls?
Alternatively: being a competent DIY-girl have on boys?

Any at all? Positive? Negative?
>>

>What effects does being a competent DIY-guy have on girls?
They'll ask you to fix things and say you're "sweet" or "cute" before they leave on their date with Chad

The truly appreciative woman is a rare find.

You also will be seen as cheap.
>>
>>1050723
Assuming I am not one of those "Please let me fix stuff for free for you, mlady". What then?
>>
Dad's gf seems to value it to the point that she considers it bragworthy. This means mainly stuff made from scratch, not really fixing leaky faucets etc.
Couple of my friends get mainly nagging when they spend "too much" time with their toys. Or that's what they say.

Personally, some seem to like it somewhat and the others don't really care. No idea about Chad's involvement.

My ex loves my /diy/ skills and I still get pussy regularly for it.
>>
>>1050718
There's no rhyme or reason to it. I've had 3 serious relationships where the girl had a strong opinion.
My wife loves that I'm a jack of all trades guy and I hear her talking about the shit I've done on the phone. I can do almost anything but now days I usually just pay someone to do the hard shit.
Chick before that thought doing anything diy was stupid and shouldn't be dealt with by college grads as it was appropriating jobs from the unskilled/uneducated.
I was in a 4 year relationship before her and she liked it, but we were both poor as fuck, it was literally I fix/rig it or we just go without.
Wife likes woodworking but has yet to finish a project in 6 years. I really wish she'd stop kidding herself.
Poor as fuck gf always crafted and did simple sewing. But would always piss me off when shetried more serious shit like woodworking or bought $60 of fabric and created a monstrosity of a jacket.
Every gift was diy, it was cute at first but it got old, as you can only fill up so many drawers and tabletops with shit.
I eventually asked her to stop making me things and just cook a nice dinner instead, but she never did. Was actually one of the reasons we broke up.
>>
There are women who like "manly men", and there are women who like fuccbois. Which kind of woman would you prefer, and which kind of guy do you want to be?
>>
I don't know if you'll find this relevant but the first time my wife discovered pinterest and asked me to do one or two things for her I made the mistake of entertaining her.

Now everything that comes out of her mouth is white noise that I ignore because I had to suffer through an every day laundry list of cool things "we" can build and heated arguments of why I was not participating in this bullshit.

Not like bills haven't been paid or the frigging steering on the car is as slack as a traps asshole, a fucking wall planter is more important for some reason.

It is a skillset like any other.

Can it get you laid? Yes, but so can just about any skill with a motivated woman.

Some women find men who have /diy/ careers attractive, some women find men who have white collar careers attractive.

I've had women offer to have sex with me or blow me to help fix something for them.

I had an ex who though the porch swing I made for her was a cheap shitty gift. I dumped her for that and sold the swing for $800 to a family friend who still uses it to this day.

A lot of girls see it as an express way to own every even slightly interesting thing they see on pinterest and facebook.

So, just like everything else, it entirely depends on the person but in general being actually skilled at something is usually a positive. That in mind, remember that a huge portion of the /diy/ world is inept and thinks they are a master craftsman, which is probably viewed as a negative.

For me it's been extremely positive. My girlfriend is very crafty in the sense that she loves painting/decorating, but she can't work power tools to save her life (I tried teaching her). A lot of the decorations in our apartment were things that I made and she painted and she loves it. Our friends/families love it too because they've requested things and when we have time we do a project or two. Not only is it bonding time but it's also a hobby for both of us.

Furthermore I'm pretty DIY when it comes to more than just crafts; I remodeled our bathroom last year and my girlfriend was thrilled. Personally the fact that she's sort of DIY with other stuff (makes bath bombs, does that count?) and likes to decorate the things I make is very attractive. It's artistic and it's nice to see the look on her face after a long days work, plus the way she lights up when we hang something we worked on together.

Women just want two things

>>1050777
Ah, Pinterest. Do I hate it with a passion and ignore everything my girlfriend tells me about it.
>>
Don't do it to get girls, like >>1050723
Having the girl of your friend circle who is actually into Chad won't just have sex with you for making her a pallet planter.
If you want to diy gifts or something then do it in an actual relationship and do it to increase the value of the house or to not need to pay someone to change the oil of her car.

TL;DR just think about what you're doing.
>>
>>1050918
If you two were married 16 years, you could be me. Also, being a craftsman means you're willing to take the time to get the job done right, in bed.

>>1050728
When you're married, it isn't cheap, it's leaving more money in the account for her.

I bought an abandoned house in X 3 years ago for 600 bucks, 2000 sqft of livable space, exclusive of full basement and double garage in the back yard. Literally knew nothing handy and had no job when I started - but over that time did all new electrical, plumbing (pex), PVC for the drains, new tile drain along entire side of the house, stud wall down entire length of basement to fix sagging joists, installed two natural gas forced air furnaces, one in a tiny attic crawlspace, other was a cheapo off craigslist so had to replace it after it kept breaking down (so 3 furnaces all together, including the ductwork), Entire new ikea kitchen, entire new bathroom, water heater, inumerable small projects, security systems, yadda yadda, $30,000 all in so far and about $10k away from it being on lock down and super nice. Anyway - point being throughout all this, literally an insane obsession that saw me arrested when i was dead broke shoplifting from HD - my GF has stuck by me (so huge kudos) but not once expressed any kind of interest or curiosity in the house or the major projects i've embarked on with it ... like even super basic stuff like painting, she has kept silent, i've never asked because it's my deal, but it still kind of staggers me - at this point i flatly refuse to help her with any handy type stuff and tell her to get her landlord to fix it. (did i mention that she doesn't want to move in) So re OP question 1. I honestly don't think she gives a hoot, most people who are habilitated to our society are totally disconnected from the fruits of their labor anyway and are totally comfortable never getting to grips with how shit around them works,... like at this point it's an eccentric quirk to DIY. Regarding question 2 - For me it would be cool if a girl was DIY centric - but they'd probably not be fully hablitated to the fuckery of capitalst society ... and so would be loopy in other departments.
>>
My girlfriend likes that I occasionally fix shit or build furniture that we need.

She hates the constant stream of used tools I buy from pawn shops and flea markets.
>>
>>1050718
depends on what you go for. the girls I go for (career minded city living upper middle class millenials) appreciate it but it's more just surprise that they don't have to hire someone to do it. If I got too into woodworking or something they'd probably think I was just a nerd with a hobby.
>>
>>1051119

>>
>>>/soc/
>>
>>1051464
You know how tourettes syndrome is commonly characterized by uncontrollable swearing and screaming?

That's one of the rarest symptoms of it, less than 10% of the already small pool of people with tourettes exhibits that trait, and even then it's usually extremely mild compared to how it's portrayed. Sex reassignment surgery aka cutting your dick off is only pursued by an extremely small minority of transsexuals, yet that's what gets all the attention. It's the same shit.

Of course I haven't cut my dick off, why would I? The entire point is to assume a female gender role in society and be seen by others as a girl. People in public don't see my genitals, cutting my dick off wouldn't accomplish anything.
>>
>>1050723
worth waiting for? there's an existential question for you. I lean towards yes.
>>
>>1051470
I was trying to ask if you where what I guess you people call ftm

But no your a trap, and from your defensiveness it sounds like a rather unconvincing one.

Most chicks who pretend to be boys end up looking far more believable than the other way around.
>>
>>1050718
I've received absolutely no respect for being a DIYer, and it has not helped at all with women.

I have a background in materials engineering, was a certified mechanic for 6 years, and have worked on construction crews here and there. I can pretty much do anything except weld (I suck at welding)

True story: I was in the middle of pulling the heads off my '75 k3500 when a couple of neighbor girls walked by. They asked what I was doing and I explained. Then they immediately asked why I wasn't watching the game like everyone else, and explained I'm not interested in sports.

And then one of them gave me a snide look and said "Are you even a real man if you don't watch football?'

I'm not one to paint with broad brushes, but most women are bitches that couldn't tell a turd from a diamond.
>>
>>1050718

They almost always appreciate it. Regardless of how you look, it's always a positive trait. If you look decent, they *really* appreciate it.

And as a side note, non-Western Asian girls will get "moist" when you fix/build things for them...especially if it saves them a bit of money.
>>
>>1051509
Most people on 4chan use trap to refer to male crossdressers, and dickless dude would be a term aimed at a mtf trans who had genital surgery, since most people on 4chan consider mtfs to still be men

Being /diy/ and capable isn't much of a thing women look for at first glance.

It's not an initial attractor, it's better when you already have a woman and you can do diy shit, shows you're worth even more than initially thought.
>>
>>1051582
Pretty much this, right here. Especially if your /diy/ skills are practical, instead of useless nerd projects.

The time I fixed her car's a/c for $165 instead of $900 really impressed her. Building raised bed gardens was super easy, and paid off like you wouldn't believe. And redoing the tub into a huge shower with heads at both ends was like a sex machine...

It's more visible when you are already in relationship and live with each other. I live in little bit conservative place and women DO expect you to know how to fix basic things. The DIY as in making something, rather than fixing something is more tricky. She won't be impressed by your AVR project but if you can build something, even a nice bench to place in your garden or whatever - then yeah, she'll like it.

As I've said it's more of an marriage/long-term thing. Some girl you've met in a club and she came to your place won't be impressed by any of it, but a woman that looks for potential life partner will pay attention to it(which doesn't mean it's enough for them).
>>
>>1051786
THAT. all of it.
>>
>>1050718

DIY = intelligence
Intelligence = sexy

Being financially responsible, and physically capable is not the same as cheap.

Hobbies keep a man mentally and physically active = healthy and alive. Good for long term relationships.

Girls will show appreciation and respect, when you have the same for yourself.
The only way to respect yourself is through achievement.

Therefore, DIY = competent and sexy, worthy of respect..

DO DIY BOYS (and gals)
>>
Never fix shit for a woman who isn't already giving you enthusiastic access to her slit.

Replaced my gf's flasher last weekend. Took ten minutes, saved her 150 bucks at a crooked shop, and used her face like a fleshlight. Cost less than a couple cups of coffee. It was a good day.
>>
>>1050718
I think women prefer a man who can fix stuff and make stuff to one who cannot.
I think women like even more the man who can afford to pay someone else to do things for him.
>>
>>1050718
I was once seeing this well off Indian lawyer. She smoked herbs and I mentioned making a bong for my wife. She was impressed. I made one for her, out of a POWERade bottle, a straw and some aluminium foil. She damn near came. We hit some DIY weed through that sub zero saltwater and lit the tin foil like a couple of degenerates. I think I might miss her.
>>

>What effects does being a competent DIY-guy have on girls?

Some of them like it, some of them are self centered and have zero interest unless it helps them.

My recent ex had her ass saved a number of times when her early 2000s car had serious issues.

I also reverse engineered the CANBUS network, made up a board in Eagle, had some made at OSHpark, tl;dr I fooled the car into thinking my board was the aftermarket $800 CD changer. It has bluetooth, full display and steering wheel button functionality now, for less than $50.

She also almost died two weeks after we broke up because she never let me fix her emergency breaks and lost all braking functionality going 70 on the highway, in an automatic.

Life is pretty fucking hilarious sometimes.

I've DIYed since youth and have no use for humans who aren't competent. I actively dislike helpless people who don't at least try. I'll help anyone who tries. That attitude got me an exceptional woman.

My late wife was a much better DIYer than most guys, including me and I'm fairly sharp. She did our home renovations, car and motorcycle painting, and when she got bored in the evenings she crocheted Victorian bedspreads out of thread. We both wrenched motorcycles and worked on aircraft (USAF) for a living. She rebuilt my Harley FXR while I was in Korea as a surprise.

There are competent women out there but you need to circulate to find them. I recommend motorcycling.

Maybe with shallow, materialist whores.

In my case, my gf doesn't react too much, but she thinks it's cool and interesting that I build stuff. She's wanted to watch me solder up electronics before, and has been attracted to the fact that I do things like car repairs, deck work, and yard work. In most cases girls don't seem to care or think much of it. It's sort of over the head of most of them, but some view it as "manly" which is positive.

I don't think competency is something other people notice much. I think nous is a thing though. Americans probably call it can-do, or maybe even chutzpah.

My wife doesn't care how well I make anything. I make a bunch of stuff for our house, and fix a bunch of things too. Whether I've done a good job of it doesn't seem important. Know-how is important to me, and is important to how I make a living, but it's how I get on with a job that gets her moist.

Most people find a solid work ethic, and a can-do attitude pretty attractive.

Who cares. You do it because you love it. Other peoples opinions are theirs, not yours. Other people liking or disliking what you do is an abstract bonus; there's no inherit objective meaning to it. Do what you do with passion for the love of the craft, not because it wins you points with other people's thoughts or feelings.

This guy is super awesome...I actually met him once. My gf is a substitute teacher who worked with Red's son's now ex-wife (this was before they were exes). Gf dragged me to her birthday party awhile back and who the fuck do i see shootin the shit in the kitchen with a bunch of randos? Fuckin Red gd Green.

Funnier part is that I didnt even know for sure that it was him until I chatted with him and said, "Man, you look exactly like Red Green"
and he's just said "Well I'd sure hope so because I am him"

My life has been continuously downhill since that day...except for that one time I saw Dan Aykroyd in line at the grocery store at my cottage. Im sure hes used to weird people but he did seem mildly concerned at how i was staring at him. I was trying to find out if it was him or not. Turns out it was but he left quick cause i was creepin pretty hard.

I feel like replacing the word 'wealthy' with the word 'lazy' makes that statement a lot more accurate. Only people I have ever done work for were lazy fuckers. Google is literally filled with all the information that you might possibly need and the only thing that you need to brave on your own is how to use the tools themselves. Everything after that is finesse that comes with time and practice.

I do, however, appreciate the colourful language used to describe various types of physical labourer. Artisan. Does sound kinda hipster though.

Sounds like you are thoroughly surrounded by wasteful hipster fags. To find your people you've got to look in the right places! Check out RC and model plane clubs. Rencon, if you're into smiths (who ISN'T?). Linux clubs/circuit bending if you're into tech stuff. There's tons of cons out there that would be good for meeting people that work with cloth, cosplay. Etc.

Meetup is a generally good place to start if you are unaware of any local goings on, but I've met nothing but a string of weirdos through it. It's important to keep trying, if it's something that you want to change. Takes effort, just like any shop project. Time, patience, intuition. All of that shit.

Seems it's mostly guys on here, so I'll give my two cents. I've had two experiences as a diy girl.

1.) A lot of people don't take me or my skillset seriously and can be downright condescending. These I tend to avoid (unless it's family, in which case I'm stuck)

2.) They think it's super hot but want to prove that they're better by quizzing me on my experience. I don't even bother with these anymore.

It's rare to find people who don't fall into the first two categories. Which is one of the reasons my husband (a fellow diyer) fell in love.

2) sounds like they're treating you like a man, which is to say: they're trying hard to not be condescending by being competitive with you the way they are with other men, but trying to condense it down into a few minutes instead of spreading it out over several years. Is your husband a diyer in your "field"? I diy a few things (am a machinist by trade, but I also turn a few things in the garage, and do horrible mature diy wood "work" and the beginnings of some leather holster making). My wife does a lot of sewing. I'll occasionally sew a few things but for the most part we stay in our own field and work individually. I think that kind of makes things easier in a lot of ways. But it is kind of lonely too if you think about it too hard.

>As I've said it's more of an marriage/long-term thing. Some girl you've met in a club and she came to your place won't be impressed by any of it
I've had club girls be impressed by shit I've done and I've had female housemates blown away by the lan I wired up with neat housings etc.

Some of the club girls thought about upgrading me to bf just because of stuff like that, the housemates not so much but they respected that I could fix little shit around the house (rental, landlord was a bro though and preferred me to fix shit in the first instance if I was up for it).

My wife loves this kind of thing, her father can do little things and he's better with lights than I am but I replaced a door lock, simple stuff like that and she thinks that that's pretty amazing and as a white-collar worker who can replace the community handyman, she feels like she did well. She loses her mind when I fix her laptop though.

The one we saw was rocking slowly from side to side, then raising and lowering slowly as well. Carnival ride for infants maybe? I have no idea if it vibrated. The one I used initially ran on three C batteries and it lasted a long time, at least a month, maybe two. It worked great for calming down fussy infants. Just a wire frame "bouncy recliner" with a vibe on it.

Basically if a girl does not appreciate my skills, shes lost to me. It demonstrates her lack of appreciation in general which wont allow a healthy relationship. Also, i'm downright impressive in my skill so for a girl not to notice, she might have her priorities wrong.

as for /diy/ girls, i love them. I wish there were more with actual skill. I had a thing with a girl who originally went to school for electronics and then after went to school for furniture making. her talent with wood was such a turn on (honestly, pun not intended). i was stupid enough not to act quickly enough and now shes dating some hipster fag that plays at being a machinist getting paid laughable money in a mediocre shop with skills i rival just from self learning and almost no experience.

i hope to find a girl like that again but in my city people are as shallow as can be and would rather fall into their stereotypes than do something a bit different.

As soon as my wife determines that I am capable of doing something, anything, she determines that 1) we no longer need to pay for expert service, 2) my failure to meet the same quality standards as expert service are due to my innate laziness or other personal failings, and 3) Its now soley my job to do it, even if she is just as capable. Her logic is that yeah, anyone can mow a lawn, paint a room, or hem pants, but since I already know how, she see's no reason for her to learn it.

I think wives run on the same pattern algorithms as search engine advertizing; show the slightest familiarity in a topic and you get bombarded.
>>
>>1067292
Introduce her to the concept of opportunity cost:
While you may be doing these things, you might be doing something much more productive instead.
lets say you get 50$/hour, and a repairman gets 80$/hour, but you take 3 hours to do what he does in one, not to mention that his quality will be higher too: that means that the repairman saves you 150-80= 70$.

Yeah, if you get a class 3 FFL you can manufacture and sell as many firearms as you want, you've just got to obey local and federal laws, and keep records of what you sell and to whom.
>>
>>1071375

Kind of.
A SOT class two is mainly for manufacturing, a SOT class three is mainly for dealing.

There are numerous subtypes of SOT classes where some overlap may occur.

You also need to be very cautious of manufacturing any sort of MG, with intent to sell. Your legal market for post 86 MG's will be very small, and is rapidly shrinking.

Silencers/ Suppressors, DD's and SBR/SBS's are still a fairly open market though, albeit with the concern of local laws as you mentioned.

Women honestly are overrated.

This feeling that you are having is your instinctual urge to reproduce and pass on your genes.

Just make some good friends and have a meetup every once in a while. I guarentee that you will be happier.

women dont really understand what im doing. they just see a mess then when its put back together i've 'cleaned up the mess' and it looks the same to them.

Well, I'm an operations research analyst, but my hobbies are mostly engineering centric. My husband is a philospher (mfa). He has a background in construction though. Our interests generally overlap in mechanics. We're rebuilding a cargo van then converting it into a stealth camper. He's working on the flooring, walls, and insulation. I handle the electrical. I'm building a solar power charging system atm. Actually, I'm pondering the addition of a thermoelectric generator to convert the roof heat, but that's a new area to me
>>
>>1074116
Doesnt thermoelectric converters have a bad efficiency? Like 1-3%?
Unless you take exotic stuff like closed Helium Sterling engines.

Some men have a fragile masculinity.
Imply anything that makes them feel less of a manly man (like anything vaguely associated with girls or gays), and they'll have to claim loudly they're not faggots and/or weep in a corner.

I think a more balanced view might be better:
There is stuff that is cheaper to have done, and other that would be cheaper or better to do oneself. It depends on the situation such as ammount of leisure time, priority between mainstream and unique (i.e. mowing the grass = very mainstream since no special skill is necessary for that, combined with little free time and a high per-hour salary, it might then be best to have that done)

Why am I this hard?
>>
My girl l both loves my diy and is very good herself, just in different avenues. Mine is plumbing and electrical, she's more into construction. This Valentine's day, I got her a new circular saw.

Wait, why isn't there a molded plastic organizer to all of that?
Also.. what would be the most cost/efficient way to make your own?
>>
>>1080092
You mean the picture?

Honestly the most efficient way would be to buy one of good quality with all the tools already in place.
Anything else will simply not be worth the cost.
You could buy one of those empty tool racks and then only make the plastic parts yourself that keep the tools in place.
However the only cost efficient way to do that imho is to use foam and cut out the parts where the tools will fit. Foam however will wear down every quickly.

If you want to start molding, the cost for the mold will be a multiple of what you spend for a fully equiped tool rack, unless you intend to make many and sell them.

3D Printing may work, if you only make very small fixtures for each tool.
>>
being the maker of impact toys and bondage furniture makes you popular to the fetish community...and that gets you the STRANGE BOOTY...
>>
>>1080092
The aviation industry solved that long ago with tool box foam. Look it up. Some tool vendors will laser cut the stuff but it's easy to use other methods. Makes inventory easy.

Well in a relationship or friendship you'll be seen as usefull or handy. But that's not much help in getting into relationships.
If you got a chick friend who might be into you going over to her house for a quick fix and a cup of coffe might get you somewhere. Or not since friends.

Pretty useless trait if you are young, the older you are the more women will actually like it, but still use you for it.

Im glad you found a good one anon, brings a tear to my eye.
As a younger guy, I have to say its getting harder and harder to find a half decent woman. Most of them are iphone toting, starbucks slurping whores that cant even use a computer for more than 5 minutes without installing malware.

People should NOT complement each other. A long lasting relationship is one where both (or more) have similar interests. There is research on this subject.

I'm a girl who is a mechanic and home brews, makes furniture, etc. for shits in my spare time. Some will like that I perpetually smell like sweat metal and oil, but will be VERY careful about how clean your fingers are before giving a woman a hand job. I've given my gf UTIs before because I forgot to clean my hands completely before flicking her bean.

Not very surprising. I believe the bigger differences can be found in attitudes than gender.
Girls aren't supposed to do shit so they are taught to not to. Not that they can't. You just check out the posts in this thread, an insecure diy-oriented girls isn't going to be bragging with her mad skills anytime soon...

I definitely get negative responses but I mostly choose to ignore them. Often when I'm at work male customers will try to lift things for me, try to tell me how to do my job, etc. This can be frustrating but I feel like most of the time the intention is good, so I let it go, as I can't really do anything about it.

I guess you werent actually here when the board was new were you?
A thread would stay up a month with only 5 posts. A thread that would have 100+ replies could stay up 2-3 months easily

>I was moving pretty fast if I recall correctly.

Are you talking about the first couple weeks when it was /b/ 2.0 with people trying out the board before leaving and never coming back?
Everyone flocks to new boards, most dont stay.

Once things settled, it was very slow.

>What is this clover invasion?
I honestly dont know how anyone who has been here a while could have missed this.

Late last year the Clover app made /diy/ a default board, new posters filled the board. Post quality went down overnight. Everyone was asking why there was an influx of spammy /b/ type posting and trolling.

Its somewhat settled down now, but there is still a fair share of garbage posting

There is nothing currently not running smoothly at my homestead, except for a backup sump pump that might need a bearing, and the extending dog leash has some gravel in it that needs extraction.

My wife loves that I'm OCD about DIY, and I love when she comes home from nights out with her friends (when they bitch about their husbands), I get mad crazy gratitude BJ's (if I manage to stay awake long enough).

I kinda like going over to our couple-friends houses, after a while I get the inevitable "mind taking a look at this?" or the wives tell their husbands to ask my to help with something.

Dunno, I just like fixing shit. Keeps me busy.

This only happens once you have set a precedent to fix something for free.
You tell them no in the first place you wont have this problem.

Many people learned this early on with PC trouble and their family.
