Thinking about getting a 1995 Grand Cherokee with about 260k miles and "minor" issues. It has an exhaust leak and the 4x4 doesn't work, and I was wondering if it's possible to DIY these things? Not extremely mechanically inclined but can probably figure something out. Worth getting into or just get a mechanic? Also not sure I'd this is the best place to post this.
>>
Also it has the 4.0 Inline V6, heard it's an awesome motor and lasts forever. Getting the vehicle for $600

Dont do it. Bet you $1 the transmission is fucked. Jeeps need a new one every 100k mi or so

Inline V6? Explains the price...

>ZJ Grand Cherokee
>4.0

Don't fucking do it man. The 4.0 is a great engine, but it is NOT enough motor for a vehicle of that size. I know. I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee WJ with the 4.0. It is absolutely pathetic. Awful. Worst thing I have ever driven in my life.

If you're set on buying a Grand, just get one with a v8. The I6 is super reliable and all that shit if you avoid or fix the head problems you get with some years, but it does not belong in a Grand. Grands are too fucking fat and heavy for them. Grands arent all that reliable, so the reliability of the I6 is wasted on them anyways. The trans will shit the bed before either engine. You won't get better mpgs. You're looking at about 14 mpgs with the 4.0 or the 5.2. That might seem odd, but the 4.0 has to work a lot harder than the 5.2 to get a fatass ZJ moving. I could go on and on. Basically just do not fucking buy a grand with a 4.0.

All that aside, I would steer clear of that particular ZJ anyways. 260k miles is a lot of fucking miles for one of those. That's right about the point where most zj transmissions die. The "minor issues" will not be minor issues. They will be fairly major issues. If you're not mechanically inclined, don't even go near it. A $600 260k mile ZJ is going to need a lot of fixing, and if you're not prepared for that, don't buy a high mileage grand.

/o/ has a Cherokee thread up right now. I'd suggest you go there and read the thread. If you have any questions, that would be the place to ask. Or at least that would be the place to ask if you gotta ask on 4chan anyways. You'll definitely get more of a response there.

This guy is right. /o/ likes the idea of cars, nearly no one works on them or owns one though.

>>1049988
260k is a lot in any manufacturers terms my man. The 4x4 is probably a really irritating, multi person job that requires rather large sockets and pretty good disassembly and assembly experience.

The exhaust problem is doable. You can:

1.) Ignore it if your state doesn't rape you on emissions

2.) take it to the deepest hood in your area with cash only and tell the dude you have $100 only, in cash and need a hand.
>>
>>1049988
$600? Not bad, if you figure you're getting a car for about $100/month.
I've had 2. Both had AC issues, not worth spending on. Second one gave me about a minute's notice before the engine completely blew.
>>
>>1050005
A 95 is nothing like the new soccer mom jeeps. The aw4 and ax15 both last forever, just like the engine.
>>
>>1050026
This this this.

I own a 1994 F150 with a similar engine, and you need to understand that the whole body is STEEL because it's a 90s vehicle, and weighs a shit fuck ton more than the fiberglass shit boxes of today, so it's not enough engine for it's size and weight. If you want a reliable, durable, beast from the 90s with a "million mile motor", get something with a v8
>>
>>1050056
Honestly, 260k isn't shit with a 90s vehicle most of the time. My 1989 Cadillac DeVille made it to 436k before it was just too much money to keep her running. My 96 volvo 960 and 94 F150 are both over 350k right now and still running great. The F150 gets shit mileage though because it's a really heavy truck for the motor
>>
>>1049988

260k miles.. not bad for the I6

engine timing chain was due at 200k
Other than that it's probably going to need a new distributor (check inside for oil, that means the bushing is leaking). not an expensive fix though.

Make sure it's got all the recalls.

Suspension is going to be worn if it has never been replaced. Bushings front and rear cost about $600 to get done or $150 or so if you really want to enjoy the pain in the ass they are to do. They ain't cheap. But when they go out the Jeep will wonder all over the road.

But that 4wd don't work.....
Find out what kind of T-Case it has.
Sometimes that's due to broken or failed linkage (cheap) or driven in 4 part-time on hard road... it could be fucked inside.

Quadratrack (only 4Hi/N/4Lo) are full-time units. could be low on fluid. (basic ATF fluid)

Best to go ask one of the forums like jeepforum.com lots of articles and info.

260k is a lot of miles on any engine. 4x4 not working is not what I would regard as a minor issue. I'm fairly competent, but you don't sound as capable OP and this isn't a job I'd take on.
>>
>>1050454
Ditto. My first shit box was a 94 escort with some weird prototype engine or whatever.
It hit 395k, then some jackass in a riceburner rear-ended me and the whole car shit the bed.

Still, OP, I gotta steer you away from that. I think my pops had the same year etc and it turned into a money pit as soon as it hit 250k.
>>
That's a lot of miles, god knows why the 4wd is broken. It's not that it'd be impossible to DIY, it's that it may be too much for a newb.

Sounds like a money pit to me.
>>
Mechanic here. It's a money pit. They are famous for dead transmissions and many of the V8s have had piston failure. (See pro engine rebuilder mags.)

Get a Ford or a Chevrolet if want large trucky object, Yota or Nissan if like small.

Working at a used car lot building trucks and SUVs was educational. Chrysler a shit.

I wholeheartedly agree with all these posts. Every vehicle at these high mileages become a constant project car. I'm currently working on an entire fuel delivery system overhaul on my 96 XJ; it's at 325k and none of my garage records show anything more than a spark plug change at odd intervals (anywhere between 15k-60k difference)

With that said, I spend anywhere between $100-$200 per month on parts. I do all my own work and religiously follow the factory service manual. My dream is to get it to 600k. I know exactly what is going on the jeep and it's stock or better parts. Always.

High mileage vehicles are not for someone who isn't mechanically inclined, because taking it to a garage and being charged hundreds for parts that typically cost <$50 is ludicrous
>>
>>1053742

Samefag. I got into working on the jeep when goodyear was going to charge me $230 for an oil pressure sending unit. Sounds very critical and difficult right? WRONG. As I learned more and more about cars servicing them is very very deceptively easy- just there are times you have to remove half the engine to get to the two bolts you actually need

It was $17 at advance auto and took me less than 5 minutes to put it on. I'm not joking, click link below is a 5 minute video and most of it is the guy talking about it

Exhaust leak is easy. For that kind of POS, just get the tape with resin and wrap it around.

You must find out (with a pre-buy checkup some mechanics do) why it won't work. This could be 0$ for a linkage adjustment, up to way more than the truck is worth.

Good luck.
>>
>>1050009
yeah what the fuck is an in line V6? Where the fuck is the V on that
>>
those things are throwaway cars. ive pulled so many of those trannys its rediculous and they stuck that 4.0L in everything back in the day. hillbillys love these things because of brand loyalty but i promise its a piece of shit.
>>
>>1054903
Used car dealer mech who agrees heartily. There are many in salvage for dead transmissions so we always had plenty of clean body and interior parts to match whatever shitbox we bought at auction.

Chrysler a laughably bad shit. I didn't have an opinion until working on them.

No problem.
