I always just use my 66 tool but I believe those were actually designed with screwdrivers' in mind. Lay the red wire across one of the slots in the metal strip for the red and push across the wire with a screwdriver on one side them the other.
Don't touch green or ground unless you want a little tingle. Or go unplug your wiring at the demarc before you work on it.

just get a new plate that uses a keystone jack so that u can punch it down with ease

make a punch-down tool out of a couple of popsicle sticks and some tape

Cut looped red wire, strip a bit from the end connect the two red wires with solder then tape. Or do the same with cable clips, or whatever.
Honestly, you are running voice. As long as metal is touching metal, you are good to go.

Twisting shit together or other bad connections results in corrosion and static. There's no reason he shouldn't just do it right and punch it back down on the idc strip.
You buy a new one
