Hey /diy/, I was wondering if something like this could be easily used in a automotive application. Do I need to worry about voltage regulation or is that kind of thing built into the LED board? This is my first time /diy/ing with LEDs so I don't have a lot of experience.

it can be alright. see how much current it draws at 14.5V (the voltage supplied by the alternator when it's running). if you can keep it cool at that level you should be ok.

Looks like it is designed for 12 Volt use. Previous post mentioned checking it at 14.5 V, but odds are it will be OK.

The lighting pattern will dictate its use. This will probably be OK for a dome light or other interior use. Probably not designed for external lighting.

LEDs need a resistor to limit the current. This one has one built in and will work straight off of your automotive supply.

I'm not sure where you get 14.5 from, most cars are different and for almost any situation that difference is irrelevant.

My biggest concern was that the output of the alternator isn't a constant 12v, but the general consensus is that they'll be fine. I'm going to go ahead and pick some up. Thanks for the help /diy/

All the hot off road lights are LEDs now.
Not sure how bright that one is, but they outperform standard bulbs in general.
Fun part about those panels is that they can be mounted in a lot of places that were too small/shallow for regular setups.

And voltage ratings are a generalization.
A "12 volt" will usually work fine at 9v-15v.

Houses for example are referred to as 110v or 120v- its the same thing. I've seen houses at 90v because of old transformers.

Price is good, quality of circuit is bad. I would buy and do a simple modification to add a current regulator (and maybe a dimmer because many led regulators come with a simple way to implement that). Also, automotive electronics should withstand some 30v peaks or 9v undervoltage transients. Depending on how humidity is where you live, you might want to use some lack to protect the pcb from rust. P. S. If u just buy it and wire it to 12v it will work too
