Hello diy!

I just wanted to ask if anyone around here tried to make their on Guitar, how hard it was and if you followed any kind of How-To, like the ones from Tom Bills.

I'm really considering making my own custom Acoustic guitar, but i really want to know, from the experience of someone if it is doable without any solid knowledge given by a true luthier, and if it is worth it.

Thanks in advance

Alright, I'm not really a lute, but I do know one. Without years of experience your guitar will sound like shit. Might not even work. Its a frustrating process, and if you are serious about it you should speak to a real luthier near you to see if he will take you as an apprentice. Good luck, friend.

Acoustic guitars are way harder than electrics to make. I would start with a solidbody electric if it's your first guitar.

I imagine building guitar is fairly easy, it's just a box with a hole and a stick. But making it sound like something better than cardboard with wire is whole different story.

Here, have some public domain stuff on violin making, maybe you find some useful tips. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything specifically on guitars.

I've built a couple, you need to know the mechanics of how sound works with regard to guitar design and wood, with advanced wood working skills. It can be frustrating and rewarding, not something I would want to do full time.

Agree. Even though electric are not that hard, i had few problems due to lacking tools. Made couple of mistakes, but remember, that's what makes a great luthier; the one that can repair mistakes is a good luthier.

I made a guitar as part of a class, it was fun and it sounds good. I don't know how it'd go on your own the first time but I guess as long as you have enough time, timber and patience anything is possible. I think we followed the stewart mcdonald dreadnought plans.

This is the one I made

Thank you all very much, for the tips.

Considering this, maybe i will first try an electric one, since it really seems a bit easier to make, considering the time it would take.

I tried to speak to some Luthiers around here, but none of them seem to have the conditions to take me as an apprentice, and all of them only work in violins, an instrument that also fascinates me, so little but so powerful.
I live in OPorto, Portugal by the way, so with that you can already see that maybe is really hard to be an apprentice, most of the luthiers are probably around Coimbra or Lisbon, since the Portuguese Guitar is mostly made there and the forte of musical instruments handcraft market, a great number of the other instruments are imported.

Forgot to say, your guitar looks really good, what kind of wood did you use?

Anon, your guitar looks really good to, do you have a video with a sound test? I would really like to hear how it sounds.
And by the way what kind of materials did you use? The wood from the body is different from the neck?

Thank you anon, this is really helpful, i'll learn a lot from this. These are better than the ones that i found.
