How do I into electronics thread.
Finally got some spare time and a bunch of basic components but am finding getting started with something frustrating.
So what are some good tips for a starter like me?
If i had £100 to spend to buy a bunch of stuff what should I get.
What are good starter projects I can try that wont involve costly, part and involving basic components a beginner is likely to have?
Is there a good open source hands on approach lecture or demo series I can follow, preferably something structured.

Thanks guys

The only things you need to buy are a soldering station and solder. Everything else can be scraped or looked up/downloaded online. Unless you want to work with microcontrollers, then you can buy some cheap arduino knock-off from china on ebay for a pound each

Oh and a voltmeter would be nice too.

Buying random components isn't going to help you with anything.

If you want to design electronics, then pick up a text book and start reading, then download a simulator like LT spice.

If you want to follow a schematic that some one else has designed then order specifically the components in the diagram, a breadboard, some solid core wire, maybe 22 awg, a pair of needle nosed pliers and some wire strippers.

Also a power source, a cheap plastic battery holder is a start.

As for a starter project,..a LM386 based amplifier is what most people used to build in high school electronics. For 'robotics' you can look into h-bridge motor drivers or go into micro controllers like arduino for controlling servo motors.

A simulator seems like a great idea. I want to get the concepts down so Id be happy to build a simulated machine and not have to dick around waiting for delivery of some random component

Protip: if you're gonna breadboard, get some of the deluxe jumper wires. Might not seem like much, but getting regular strips to go in the fucking hole and not bend further out of shape is annoying.
>>
The best way is to find something you want to build. If it's too hard, then find something easier. If that's still too hard, keep getting easier until you git good.

Watch all videos from ElectroBOOM on youtube.

also shitty wires have internal resistances that can ruin your project

don't skimp on reusable breadboard wires

Avast! A link!

This is a decent circuit simulator to just play around with as a beginner. I used it when I was still in EE.

Fuck reusable. Get some reels of 22 AWG single-strand wire in a variety of colors and cut to proper length in the most indicative color. If you do get pre-cut jumpers, treat them as material to cut up rather than precious tools to take care of.

Breadboards should be tidy and sensibly organized so you can see what's going on even if there are dozens of connections.

Where to get LT spice? I looked on the pirate bay but all they had was spice girls albums and weird piss fetish porn

Have you tried Google or the maker's web site?
>>
>>1044241
wait, this is free? that's pretty cool

for some reason I thought it would be expensive e.g. autocad or whatever

I want to build a robot

This, but instead, just get a big spool of Cat5

It's what they used at my school, and it's fucking great. It's expensive from tech stores, but in big spools for wiring up offices, it's fairly cheap, and the strands inside are all differently colored so you can sort your shit by color. The only real problem is that the strands are single conductor copper wire, but it shouldn't be too impactful if you're working with low voltages (as you should be on a breadboard)

Buy a basic hobby book. These are usually pretty good, will have theory and basic exercises to teach you so you develop a good understanding of what your doing

The expensive and paid one is altium designer but this is really an overkill for somebody who doesn't do electronic design for a living.
>>
as long as you steer well clear of any arduino crap, you should be fine
the same goes for makezine and instructables
