Normal screwdriver would make it easier to slide under. And alligator clip lead would also mean you don't need tape. You are basically doing it right.
If you have them on a metal framed table it it possible to charge the table. I used to ground the table via a high value resistor to save it shocking me.

CRTs however, act like a big, high-voltage capacitor.
