Big mistake.

Remove the loading slide by unhooking it (piece sticking out on the left side in your pic) and pulling it out. Some staples may have gotten stuck in the slide. Get a piece of wire, bend a little hook on the end, stick it into the staple slide and pull the bent ones out.

Reload with fresh staples and never let it out of your sight again.
