Post the contents of your toolbox. Talk shit about the contents of other people's toolboxes. Make suggestions for what people should replace or add. Pic related, my general purpose around-the-house toolbox.

I'd ditch the rubber mallet, the stubby adjustable wrench. interchangeable screwdriver and slip joint pliers.

I'd also add a couple of sizes of dedicated flathead and phillips screwdrivers, needle nose pliers and tongue and groove pliers. Furthermore it is worthwhile carrying combination wrenches in the most common sizes for your car, as well as a short breaker bar with an appropriate socket for your lug nuts.

Duffel bag?

>>1037210
Like this anon, I don't really have "a tool box" in the usual sense. I have a wood shop in the basement, a metal shop in the garage, an electric/crafting workbench in a different part of the basement, and several caches of materials, tools, and supplies around the house.

The most topical thing would probably be my drill/driver bag, which is a 12x17" zip-top tool bag that holds the following:

Middle compartment:
brushless hammer drill
brushless impact driver
charger

Loose in one side compartment:
13" claw hammer
TiN twist bit set with countersink and spare Philips/Robertson driver bits
extended-reach driver bit set
impact socket adapter and socket set
self-feed bit set with extender
masonry bit set with various anchors/screws

In a bin in the other side compartment:
right-angle drill adapter
mini combination square (with level)
torpedo level
surface level
angle transfer gauge
drill gauge
vernier calipers
7" flexible shaft
center punch
10' tape measure
torx/pozidriv bit set
puck wrench
bit-holder screwdriver whose subcomponents flip around to accommodate the following: #1 and #2 Robertson and Philips, T15 and T20, 3/16" and 1/4" flat, and 1/4" and 5/16" external hex
screw extractor set
quick-release driver bit holder
hex-drive mini drill chuck
15" wallspace feeler

I also keep a 7" pliers wrench and Fastback utility knife in my pockets most of the time.

>>
I have a literal ton of fucking tools, im guessing 15-20 small boxes with specialty shit and a couple bigger boxes and a fucking roll around cart and a work table piled full
>>
>>1036560
I always carry some metric sockets and wrenches in my vehicles. A basic 1/4"/3/8" drive socket set with a couple of extensions and a universal joint can skin out a surprising portion of car and truck parts.

Metric Gearwrenches are wonderful things, especially on front wheel drive cars with tight engine compartments.
>>
The closest to to a toolbox i have is the backpack i use for work:
rg214 crimp tool
Rg58 crimp tool
Box citter
General purpose knife
Screwdrivers, 3 flat and 3 phillips
Small ratchet set with bits
Channellock
Multimeter
Laptop
Various cables and adapters for connecting with a CAN bus
a simple LED for testing polarity on serial data wiring
A ton of wago clips
Crimp tool for cable shoes
A file
2x ratchet spanner size 13
NMEA2000 t-piece and 120Ohm terminators
>>
>>1037866
And, ofcourse, the tools i place on my pants: cable cutters, wire strippers, snips, and a tiny PH2 screwdriver
>>

>>

this is considerably better..

it's tiny, ratcheting, takes 1/4 inch hex bits, comes with an adapter to stick in the 5/16th side that lets you use it with 1/4 inch sockets...

I've put way more torque on it than I expected it to be able to handle and have been pleasantly surprised..

originally these were available at home despot as a husky brand, they dropped them and went with gearwrenches version which is about an inch to half an inch larger... you can still get the smaller ones from VIM though.
>>
>>1036665
Those tiny tongue-and-groove pliers with the red handle in the bottom right are adorable, what do you use them for?
>>
>>1038235
Panel mounting stuff, I use it in conjunction with some foam or fabric to hold minitoggles to the right alignment and such (the jaws are parallel so the pressure is more even, vs trying to use regular pliers). Also just various low-torque turning if the crescent wrenches don't fit.

I also use it with smaller pipe fittings (mostly small brass stuff).

The tools I take to a quick service job or an all day job
Missing: 6-in-1 screwdriver(my boss grabbed mine and lost one of the shanks) and pipe dope(again my boss used mine cause it was available and didnt put it back so now i am minus pipe dope)
And I was the one who posted Channel Lock vs Knipex thread so in this pic u can see 2 new Knipex pliers that I have yet to use. I am expecting a lot from them cause they feel fucking good in my hands. I replaced a pair of Channel Locks and a Crescent wrench for these 2 Knipex.

no clue about the bostich version, however I've tried the kobalt version and hated it. the kobalt version uses those 2 stuipd ring magnets... the gear wrench and vim versions use small metal tension clips to hold bits in place and are much less unwieldy, also you can put the bits through "backwards" ... which is handy in some cases since the wrench has a slight bend..

My toolbox is a small tackle box.

Just a claw hammer, a 1 1/2" chisel, a 10 bit socket and ratchet set with extension, a piece of 600 grit, 6" flathed and phillips drivers, and a tape measure.

I'm not even sure how those items made their way into the box.

if you're wondering on the original reason, I have no fucking clue. Found it in the back of my grandpa's workshop and he inherited it from one of his uncles.
Hammer + knife in my toolbox is for installation of lead sheet metal for radiation shielding. Usually working in cramped areas, so a long handle just gets in the way since there's not enough room to arc a good swing. Having a heavy head on a short handle lets you put out the max amount of force.
>>1040015
>why are /diy/'s toolboxes so small and clean?
because I've got a designated tool bench at work and an entire garage at home. Toolboxes are for portability, not for storing the whole collection.

I don't have the last picture 3/3 on this computer, but I have a RLCmeter, a function generator, a proxxon TBM 220 and a scope (Rigol DZ 1054 hacked). Plus some tools for jewellery, but it is shit just buy in order to make some stuff for the birthday of my GF.

I do a lot of electronics as a hobby, I started to buy high quality tools since 2 years now. I am a student (PhD in chemistry) so i am poor as fuck. I don't want to use bad quality tools later, so I make my tool box step by step. I need a ratchet et some spanners and a kit of chisel-screwdrivers now. I am looking for wera brand tools even if it is too expensive for me now.

I don't have a lot of power tools, I am looking for a good drill.

Extremely hit or miss, they have so many different OEMs you never know what youll get.

I only buy on good sale or clearance
Try to buy Taiwanese not chinese

What I mean by hit and miss is
I have bought 2 different 1/4 sets.
One was a palm ratchet, with a pretty complete 18 sockets (5-13. 3/16-1/2), clearance from 25$ to 5$.
The other was a small bit driver set, we were talking about it earlier in the thread. It had 10 sockets of most popular sizes. Holiday pricing paid 9$ instead of about 20$

The bit driver set sockets are made in Taiwan, the palm driver sockets are chinese.

They look identical, with the same laser etching and branding.
The chinese ones are much bulkier and lighter though.
The taiwanese ones are smaller, heavier and just look nicer.

The kicker?
I have a handful of individual 1/4 sockets I bought off the rack in sizes that I regularly use. They are made in Taiwan, BUT they are LARGER than the Made in Taiwan sockets that came with the bit driver.
They are the same bulky size as the chinese ones.

The general consensus I have always heard was that in cheap tools, thicker and bulkier sockets and wrenches are to compensate for cheaping out on material. You make it thicker because you are using cheaper materials to get the same strength.

Comparing an 8mm 1/4 socket, all 3 Kobalts are thicker walled and lighter than my USA craftsman, which is only marginally thicker than my Snap-on socket.

I am really autistic about my socket sets and wrenches matching each other, and they way they change shit often is really awful for me. It makes you feel like you fucked up when you buy something and clearly the maker changed, feels like they cut corners and pulled one over on you.

I have a few pairs of Kobalt pliers and vise grips, same deal. Some are ok some are complete garbage.

At the site or in my garage. Drill, impact, screw gun, sawsall, drywall shit, carpentry shit, steel shit, any bit or socket I want, drill bits up to 1", hammer, prybar, levels, clamps, squares. Next time im at home depot I'm buying a cordless skill saw, hole cutters, spades? For coring? Wood (not that I've needed them but I was planning on running some pex underneath when I get to work on the bar.) I want to buy one of those stanley fubars too but I'd only use it for hitting trees probably.
Any good recs for a small screwdriver kit? I got a cheap one for Christmas but I'd like to do more tinkering with electronics

But I've been working on a tool bag to keep in the car.

I had the same problem. Dumpster dived pic related, it seems to work out better. I use hair ties to hold my Fatmax vertical next to the handle. Carrying a hacksaw is still problematic, the blade tends to wind up against your knuckles when you grab the grip.

Still better than those bucket bastards, though.

I got the even smaller tool bag one. like 10"x10" foot print, fits in my truck bins nice, has a little drawer underneath it for screws/hardware.

Works good for telecom shit. I wouldn't want anything heavier or bigger. My bigger tools have purpose-built cases, and any larger collection of smaller tools would be annoyingly heavy.

actually, flathead + phillips, you covered for about 90%+ of all-known probable emergencies there. And the remainder weren't urgent anyway.

An adjustable spanner and you have the other 10% of emergencies covered.

I'd suggest a Makita set since you already have a few Makita tools, and the batteries.
Otherwise, I'd go with DeWalt. Less expensive for similar quality, and you can use their flexvolt batteries in their 20v max tools, if you want to have a shitton of runtime.

I don't have pics, or a single box (I have a few different boxes and cases and bag-like things), but I have:
- 8 or 10 different flatheads
- 8 or 10 different cross-heads
- about 3 torx-heads
- some hex-head drivers
- some hex-key-style drivers
- some tiny fixed-size wrenches
- some wire
- some loose components like resistors and capacitors
- about 3 sets of pliers (one needlenose, one that doubles as a simple wire cutter, one I've largely forgotten about)
- more tweezers than anyone needs
- scissors
- a box-cutter
- one of those grounding bracelet things with an alligator clip
- one of those extended triple hook chip grabber things
- nail clippers (could come in handy for something other than nails)
- sewing supplies (because fuck you)
- random parts from random electronics that I can cannibalize (which is as good an excuse as any for keeping junk)
- dozens of screws of different kinds
- Swiss army knife with a blade, bottle opener, can opener, corkscrew, and simple file
- second Swiss army knife with a blade, bottle opener, spoon, and fork (because I'm a sucker for that shit)

Twenty years ago I would work out of riggers bag made by bucket boss. Now I was trying to recreate that for my workplace tool bag and they don't have same bag anymore. I had my nose in the air to the Harbor Freight canvas bag but they are not bad. A bit smaller but the sides are not as floppy and I use one for the cordless tools and bits and another for hand tools. This worked so nicely at work that I bought a few more and made and electrical and plumbing bag at home. And right close to $10 each is very nice.

>>
>>1046982
If you don't mind buying Chinese, Harbor Freight 44" is probably the best value.

I don't know of any good USA-made options in lower price ranges... I've been trying to get a good deal on something used for a couple years now without any luck.

>>1046984
Price range doesn't bother me much as long as it's not something crazy expensive. I'm getting married in Oct and figured I could finagle some good tools into the registry.
>>
>>1046985
The problem is that there's almost nothing USA-made aside from crazy expensive Snap-on, Mac, and Matco. Waterloo still does some USA manufacturing and their stuff is much cheaper, but from what I've read quality is really no better than cheap Chinese stuff nowadays. Kennedy stuff is generally expensive and hard to get a hold of... there might be some USA-made industrial branded stuff like Proto and Williams that can be had for a decent price, but you'd have to find a way to get a hold of it or a place that will ship for a reasonable price.

Or just get Harbor Freight and be done with it... I'm really close to just giving in and going that route because it's just ridiculously difficult to get something decent and mid-priced that's not Chinese.

Of course if you're not in the US none of this applies whatsoever.
>>
>>1040098
My go to luthiers workshop is more like a science lab to look at, he would shit a brick at the state of that place, LoL.

>What's wrong with Knipex? I heard they make excellent wirecutters.

They make excellent everything.
There is some backlash when people post about them though, they get mad when you tell them that the Cobras are superior to old tongue and groove pliers, or that Pliers Wrenches are so much better than a standard adjustable.

People get too set in their ways, and then complain about spending 25$ on a piar of pliers instead of 15$
>>
>>1046988
USA made stuff isnt any better than chinese stuff
You literally pay 1000% more for labor costs, and you end up with similar quality tools.
>>
>>1047127
For me it's not really about the quality but about supporting fellow Americans and the US economy and also NOT supporting China.
>>
>>1047143
When you realize that only the lowest common denominator actually work in USA goods factories, you stop giving a shit.
This isnt the 50s, your father and grandfather voted people into power who have allowed our country to get to this point.

I see USA made stuff at department stores, they are the same price as chinese stuff. Its fucking trash and worse than the imported stuff.
That or you just pay 10 times the price and its still not an actual good product.

At least we are heading in the right direction with tools. Taiwanese and Chinese tools are not cheap, they cost a lot more than they did 20 years ago. But since most USA made tools dont exist anymore, they know there is a market for decent tools at a moderate price.
And its fucking nice to be able to afford something, and it not be complete shit.

If only would could have moderately priced chinese made everyday products that werent junk. But since our generations before us have set the market to pump out literal trash, thats what we have been left with.

But im not going to pay extra for a shittier product just to keep the cycle going longer.
I dont give a fuck about keeping a mexican who doesnt speak english his factory job.

I worked in a styrofoam factory in the middle of the midwest. Methheads and mexicans. No normal people worked there for very long. You cant make a real living by working there.

Unless of course you want to double the current price of USA made foam cups (which is stupid high already)

I don't know. Average, I guess? Something for someone with a small, modest collection of tools. I'm trying to add to it right now. I've got:
>Milwaukee cordless drill with a set of cheap bits (think they're Craftsman)
>Klein needlenose pliers
>Wiha micro-bit set, with a smaller set I bought separate that's just Torx security bits
>some off-brand hammer I've had forever
>couple tapes
>stud-finder, cheapo, think it's a Stanley
>miscellaneous odds and ends
The drill has its own case so it won't need to go in the toolbox.
