Really?
I'm not the most experienced welder but I think it's actually pretty easy to weld compared to mild steel and especially aluminum.
You do have to mind the chromium carbides but most of the time when you do basic stuff like furniture it's really not that big of a deal.

I enjoy well made tables, two seat sofas with extra cushioning, chair, I want to get into making really nicely carved desks and cabinets, stuff like that, right now I'm planning to make a sort of love memory box for a couple I know
>what furniture have you made?
I've made my own table with help from my dad, it was my first table ever, kind of gave me an idea of my future with wood. I've built lots of outdoor decks and some chairs if that counts (former carpenter's helper), a sofa once but the cushions my friend got himself
>what furniture do you enjoy making?
Boxes, desks, chairs, sofa chairs
>what furniture do you wish you had?
Coffee table, a big nice comfy chair and sofa, better desk, more space to be honest family, a better sturdier bed frame.
>favorite processes, projects, etc?
Probably using hand plane then sanding with rotary tool, applying stain and varnish, its that come together feeling. I really enjoy everything though, especially the assembly.

We call what we do `architectural concrete' (mostly counter tops) but it's still just the ingredients you mentioned. Plus some fancy additives, fibers, reinforcement, pigments, etc - And a higher ratio of sand than you'd get with like, sidewalk or construction concrete.
It's not GFRC or something though - I'm just not sure if `architectural concrete' has some special meaning to you that I'm unaware of.

Really like these chairs from CB2 amd want to use them for dining but can't afford to drop $750 on each one.

They look fairly DIY able. Would the cost of the walnut and leather be that high? (I'd probably just slap cheap hairpin legs on them)

If the wood is more than $100/chair - Is it possible for a mere human to veneer wood?

Neither are cheap but neither are anywhere near $750.
>If the wood is more than $100/chair - Is it possible for a mere human to veneer wood?
It is possible to do your own veneer, however you might want to just buy veneered plywood. They will have already done the work for you as the side(s) will have a walnut veneer. Then you just need to apply some edge banding which can be done with an adhesive which some brands already sell attached. You can also look at vinyl for the seat instead of leather. Cheaper and easier to work with and maintain.

The steel was originally powdercoated, and already has rust in a bunch of spots. I don't mind it as it is, but I suspect I'll need to do something to stop it deteriorating significantly. (care to recommend something?)

I put tung oil on the timber. I'll probably wax it too.
>>
>>1037142
>(care to recommend something?)
if I knew what you had I could make better recommendations.

option 1
remove wood
sandblast metal
paint it
paint it again
repeat
repeat
done

option 2
there are rust cleaning chemicals for sale in hardware stores
buy some.
remove wood
treat ALL of the surfaces, not just the rust spots, special applications on joints.(disassemble if possible)
rinse thoroughly
dry thoroughly
paint it
paint it again
repeat
repeat
>>
>>1037149
I'm happy for the rust to stay there though. It won't have the recycled/industrial look if I paint it that much.
Also, the steel is very thick. Maybe 2mm. So I'm not worried about it rusting through or anything. Happy to see how the timber weathers for now (it's under cover), and I'll update the steel maybe later. The timber is fixed together, but is just sitting in the top of the steel.
>>
>>1037194

unexpected
>>
>>1038010
well, if you consider it carefully. it's a fine example of peak stresses any particular piece may have to endure.

sort of like when I build a decorative saddle stand for my living-room I built it "to withstand a drunk naked [female friend] rocking around on it violently"

if you build all your furniture to withstand "a couple people fucking rough" then it should withstand the test of time quite well under normal usage.

though I may also point out that several of the pieces I posted in this thread are specifically built for fetish and sexual activity.
>>1034214

>>1034203

then again, even if it is treated it probably doesn't have a high enough concentration to effect your veggies
>>
>>1038042
not sure about food pallets

but part of why pallets are usually a very BAD construction choice is that a lot of pallets in use by non-food industries tend to have been exposed to some pretty gnarly chemicals.

that, and most pallets are made out of some pretty shitty wood

>part of me intrigued
in my spare time I braid whips, and make paddles and floggers for sale to my local community. I'll certainly discuss, but out of respect for the board I'll not post any(or post only a very few) pictures.

another way to look at it is that Kinksters of the BDSM variety tend to add interesting perks and preferences to things when they look for houses, cars, furniture, or tools. we love hardware stores for an extra reason compared to a /diy/er. I'll walk into a Dom-Depot with an extra sensitive eye for projects, or ways to pervert things. that's how you end up with inventions like the drilldo and the fuck-saw.

as I understand it the rule is in place to to stop people from flooding the board with basic shit questions featuring NSFW images.

>maybe 4chan needs a /diy after dark page?
nah, it needs a more responsible user-base, but it isn't getting one of those anytime soon so for now we may need to juggle between /diy/ and /hc/ and /d/

By DIY body disposal kit you mean contractor grade trash bags, lye, stump remover, and concrete stain remover/drain cleaner (a hard acid)? well, glue and biscuits

glue and dowels, using rabbits, and dados to reinforce joints, also just using a 2 wide strip with holes drilled along one edge, and glue that and the panel to the other panel and you get a nice solid joint, sure it looks shitty on the inside, but doing that for the bottom of a dresser make the whole thing a ton stronger

My current project: A Yellow Cedar deacon's Bench. It will have a fold up seat to stow shoes etc inside out of sight.

All of the boards were salvaged from my old back fence when I removed it. The various posts and runners were cut from yellow cedar boards a friend roughed out for me with a chainsaw.
Raised panels on the sides, front of the box and the back rest. Bottom and rear are baltic birch.

All the joinery is mortice and tenons. Tenons cut on a tablesaw with a dado, the mortices were roughed out with a drill press, then finished with a 3/4" Sorby paring chisel.

As an afterthought, I cut a bunch fof corner braces to reinforce the 8 joints that make up the box

In the backround are a pair of traditional yellow and red cedar paddles. Once I had planed and cut the outline, they were finished entiely with spoke shaves and the occasional block plane

I have designed this piece of furniture (oc do not steal). It is a combination liquor cabinet and glassware display case. It will have a locking door that folds down into a counter space to make and serve drinks.

I am wondering if anybody has done a secretary desk / liquor cabinet like this with no visible hardware.

I was thinking about constructing it with a structure hidden in the front legs that is actually rigidly attached to the door which will brace it against the bottom of the cabinet when the door is extended.

Would it be possible to hide some sort of through pivot hinge inside of the door with no visible hardware?

That looks great man. But to answer your question about the hinge I can't think of any hardware you can buy that fits that need perfectly. You could look at a type of knife hinges but I'm not sure how you'd fix it to the glass without making some rails and styles to go around it which I'm sure you don't want to do. It wouldn't be too unfeasible though to manufacture your own custom hinges or get them manufactured if you don't have the means yourself. Maybe out of brass of something.
As for their design I think you where on the ball. Did you mean something like this top and bottom? The notch in the second image would be to stop it from pulling out.

put some basic hinges slightly above the very bottom, so it pivots where I put the arrows. You'll have to raise the height of the shelf floor a few inches. This will hide the hinge and it will also make it able to hold a load when horizontal

Wan't to build an 'L shape,' corner desk for my room. Don't have much space to work with and shitty ikea desks are expensive for what you get and will waste tons of space due to their generic dimensions.

*I'll attach a picture I made in paint to show the basics of the design*

>what's the best wood to use for the tabletop (not too heavy but still sturdy and not flimsy as fuck)
I'd like it to be smooth and painted white if that changes anything.
>what's the best wood to use for the shelving on the short side of the desk?
Will also be painted white, don't care so much about smoothness but will need to be sturdy enough to support that short side of the desk.
>what's the best metal to use for the legs and how should I attach them to the under of the desk?
Would like to spray the legs a nice black colour, maybe have some sort of feet on them so they don't scratch the floor.
>will the metal leg in the back corner be enough to support the circled part of the desk?
The most weight it would have on it is maybe someone sitting/leaning on that part of the desk. Will the blue supports I drew on the diagram be enough to keep it from breaking? Some sort of strong, light metal was my idea to make sure it's as strong as possible.

>also do you have any tips or ideas to put into the desk?
Was thinking of adding some holes for cable management, attaching a power board on the under of the desk, attaching hooks to route cables underneath, things like that I guess?
>>
>>1052004
>tabletop
Laminate? If your supports are far apart and you don't have much to support weight in the middle(such as those back braces on tables) then the top is likely to sag. That's one of the sins flat pack tables tend to do.

>shelving
Well, even particleboard, really. Depends on what you want to put there. If you're going for light paperwork, then even plastic boxes would do. Once you start storing piles of documents and paper, you'll need something stronger than particleboard or else it can sag very easily, or even snap off over time.

>legs
Well this is part of the bit I'm concerned about for any desk. The legs and the frame of the desk help determine how much the top can sag or support weight. Simple vertical legs sticking out can be very weak if you push it horizontally and will cause the table to slam on top of your lap and it won't be a nice day. If you don't have access to that many tools or a good workspace, I'd advise you to build the bottom frame first, then let the top board sit on top with dowels and holes to hold it in place, allowing it to be taken off the frame. Take a look at this picture.

>supports
You're painting the top white. Assuming you go with a frame and top thing I'm going for, you won't need those supports. All you'll need are some pins/dowels/biscuits and drop the top onto the frame. Hell you can even go for a lap joint.

>tips
Main function first, bells and whistles later. No point building a bike that only has a bell and no wheels.

Consider redesigning the desk first. You're building towards the constraints of your living area and that gives you plenty(or few) options to work with. Three vertical legs ain't gonna do it with heavy paperwork with that design and you'll tip the table. Matthias did a cantilever table on his page, go make a few of those, a top frame, side braces for the corners of the legs where it meets the wall to help stop the legs from splitting when the top is bending over.

Like this. Excuse my drawing. Just my two cents. Sure, it may not be perfect or the most economical or the best possible thing you can do. A few more things to note for your table, though. Watch out for the skirting(should you have any), as that can push the table further inwards. As for cable management, add a few hooks underneath the tabletop to run cables under. If you want the top flush with the wall, consider offsetting it before placing it down and marking holes to keep it in place, so that it goes past the skirting and onto the wall. Also, not all walls will be flat or at a perfect angle, so it may be best to keep the top away from the wall - this also helps with cable management and lets you run wires down the table without cutting into it. If you do have skirting, that is usually enough for cables to run through.

You can get away with timber from your local shop, just cut to length. Use sketchup, draw plans on a piece of paper. Get things right before measurement even begins so you don't have a headache later on.

Just my two cents. Hopefully someone else can chip in with even better advice than I've given.

Have to go to work like right now but I skimmed through a bit of this. Some really good info cheers. I really like the support/legs you've suggested >>1052095 and the frame is something so simple and smart that I never even considered.

When I get back from work I'll show my 3D drawing I'm working on, but I'll probably re-do it to be more like what you suggested, thanks a bunch lad

I took a few screenshots and attached them all together, hopefully they're decent quality. Sorry about the wait, had work late at night, then went out over the weekend and then took a day of recovery.

>Top Left
Roughly how I want my room to look, the best I could do with the dimensions I've got to work with. The only thing I have at the moment is the bed and a desk, which will get sold/dumped once I've built a way better one. The shelves should be relatively simple, hence why i'm only really worried about the desk.
>Top Right
The floor plan of my room. Yellow areas are off limits because doors open within the areas. Bed is the only thing I really can't change (dimensions wise) because it's already in my room and it's pretty nice; everything else can be changed if you can justify it. I've tried to keep the room simple and spacious and what I've come to here is the best way to utilize the space (that I can figure out).

If you notice the desk not being flush with the back wall it's because there's a windowsill there which is inline with how high i want the desk to be (roughly 900mm).
>Bottom
This was the design for the desk before >>1052095 made a much nicer design, haven't made a 3D drawing of that one just yet. The only shit thing about the design is that I can't put shelves or something on the side closest to the bed. But I guess I'd have a bunch of room on the desk to put my phone, wallet, keys, laptop, etc, etc, so it probably isn't even a problem.

I'll design the nicer desk suggested later today and see what I can come up with.

My bed is black coloured wood so I was thinking the desk would look nice with black coloured legs and a white tabletop, and then the shelves just pure white, and then the wall behind the shelves/desk will be grey to compliment to whites. I'm pretty shit with matching colours but it should look nice hopefully.

As mentioned before everything else is really open for change.

What do you use the lower state of the table for? Is it storage? Or some sort of weird pool table?
>>
>>1053318
it's a gaming table for /tg/ related activities.

the lowered surface prevents dice from rolling off the table.

the felt surface is easier on reference and rules sheets.

the height difference of the table top and the felt surface is so that you can leave a game set out with all of it's pieces and simply put the wood surface over it for other activities(some games like Civ, Decent, and Tai shogi can take a dozen or more hours to complete) like eating or fucking your spouse

>what sorts of furniture do you like?
Like in the picture, shit that saves spaces, has shelves built in, hidden storage, all of that sort of stuff really impresses me
>what furniture have you made?
None yet, I'm this guy >>1053257 who's building the desk. So hopefully soon enough I will have made a desk, a tall set of shelves and a smaller set of drawers. After this I really want to build a nice couch or something
what furniture do you enjoy making?
Not applicable as of yet
what furniture do you wish you had?
I just wish I had a small house/apartment. One long room that is half kitchen, half lounge room, then another long room next to it which is half bedroom and half on-suite bathroom, and then another smaller bathroom somewhere, maybe a spare room. Anyway, a small place like that and then I'd just design all the furniture I possibly could want, making it all match and look nice, serve cool purposes and just work at it all slowly.
>favorite processes, projects, etc?
I like drilling holes because it's something that is sort of a one time gig, if you fuck it up, you might fuck everything up. And another great thing is putting all your pieces together and it all fits nicely because you planned it well, great feeling.

So my girlfriend wants a floor to ceiling display shelf. It needs to be about 5ft wide and 8ft tall, I was thinking of giving it a width of 1 or 1 1/2ft, but mainly I was wondering what material would be best? This would be my first project and it seems fairly simple with the exception of any designs I may want to put on the edges to keep it from being too boring

I've built two workbenches exactly like this anon. First one I built when I was a teenager, my first successful project as well. I attached a vice, a mini mill, must have spent at least a hundred hours at it. Moved away from my parents now, different country, left everything but two suitcases of stuff behind. Now in an apartment with a combined kitchen and dining room. Since I eat in the bedroom anyway, I built another bench just like the last one with hand tools, and use it as a second countertop. I can't fab in my apartment, have to wait till I can afford a house, so I spend hours a day cooking instead. I wish you hundreds of happy hours with your ugly table.

Fucking beautiful and brilliant in it's simplicity. It definitely needs a stain or something to finish it off. Also, you really should have used all the all the more interesting wood grains on the top. and spread them around. I am curious tho, is that table just held together with wood glue? because I dont see any fasteners.
>>
>>1064622
I agree, the table should be darker. It has a clear deck stain on it now and I'll see how it weathers next year.

It's held together with wood glue and framing nails until the last layer which is just glue. All nails are internal/hidden. I didn't want anything to show.

I'm a woodworker, I can build cabinets, doors, Windows, stairs, even guitars, but as soon as I sit down in front of a sewing machine, I freeze. My father always told me though, "If you aren't scared, you aren't learning." So I'm pressing on. I'm going to be cutting my teeth on a custom couch of my design, with minimal upholstery. It's going to be Claro Walnut and rust colored velvet, with memory foam topped high density foam cushions, and maybe backrest. Being as I'm new to upholstery are there any quirks that one encounters when working with velvet and memory foam? If I'm using memory foam on the back rest, will I need to use batting as well? Are there better ways to attach cushions to a sofa than elastic bands or Velcro? Do you have any other advice for someone just starting out?

The style you're thinking of is usually called 'MCM' in Engligh ('Mid Century Modern', which was Scandinavian inspired). The wood was 'whatever'. Nothing expensive about it. Use oak, Maple, Birch, Pine, whatever floats your boat.
