Hey there DIYers, I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with float houses? As in building a houseboat or a float house.

I´ve come across this site, http://www.westbayfloathomes.ca/float_home_designs.htm.
I have a lot of property which is ideal for a cabin, but due to socialist laws and red tape I am not allowed to put up a cabin on this piece of land. From my research it does seem like I am able and allowed to live on the water on this property.

Just looking to build a basic cabin that floats basically. There is no possibility to get power up there anyway, so I might buy a generator and some solar panels and batteries to charge my phone and gps, maybe have some lights.

What would be the ideal materials to keep this thing afloat? Im thinking of just making a floating "dock" with timber and buoyancy kept by plastic barrels.

if you mean building a barge, i am pretty sure that means another set of laws and regulations

not sure tho but it sounds like a disaster
>>
>>1030725
Not sure about plans and all, but bonus points if you register it as a boat, put a transom on the back, and toot around the lake in it.
>>
>>1030725
No I don't, but this is interesting on a few levels.
Why can't you put a house on your land?
>>

Physics regarding fluid buoyancy 101:
Add a ballast/anchor so it won't topple easy.

The land is regulated as farmland, so I cant put up a cabin on the land. Its in Norway. Just playing with the idea for now, but I think its doable.

>>1030889
Will anchor it.
>>
So build a 'Farm Equipment shed'. Instead of a cabin. Include a small apartment above it where you can use to prepare food and nap during your lunch breaks while 'farming'.
>>
Google 'Pontoon Porch'.

Guy had one of those on a local lake. I think it was the builder/designer. It was actually quite impressive and something similar would probably fit your needs.
>>
Concrete ship might be ideal for the tub. Since you are in Norway, shit is going to end up frozen, and that means you want something that won't get fucked up when the water freezes around you.

There was a small community near me that consists of less than 2 dozen houseboats. They were all old and in shitty shape. The community got broken up back in the early 2000s

They have awkward layouts and cost a fucking fortune to heat in the winter. The people who live on them are trailer trash tier. These are all true houseboats and all of the old ones are total shit. No idea about new ones, I'm sure they're much better.

I knew a guy who floated a whole house on the river for a while. It's a pretty funny story, really.

There was a small area that was near the river here and only had one access road. The city had built a bridge there over the road which dropped the clearance to something like 15 feet. Well the city also planned on building a new dam down stream of it. The whole area was to be flooded so the state bought all of the land that the houses down there where on via eminent domain. They then put the houses up for auction for super cheap for people to come in scrap the houses. Now the houses down there were pretty nice since they were right next to the river and were pretty decent sized. The houses couldn't be moved due to the bridge. Well a family friend bought one of the houses for something like 4k since they were basically being sold to gut and then the city would knock them down. Well he had made arrangements for a house moving company to come in to move the house down to the river and load in onto 2 barges that had been setup to hold the house. He loaded it up brought it downstream like 10 miles to a place on the river where it could be picked up by the moving company and trucked into place. Due to low water at the time though, the houses ended up sitting out on the river for like 2-3 weeks because they couldn't get it out so the buy ended up camping out on the river for part of the time.

I think he said overall he ended up paying like 30k for the house and the moving and the special barge setup. House today is valued at like 700k.

I worked on a massive house boat on lake mead (las Vegas, nv)
Dude said they had tons of concrete blocks as ballast in the bottom. But the boat was 3 stories- second biggest "boat" on the lake.

So that's definitely something to think about.

As for floating- plastic 55 gallon drums are good.
You can fill them with expanding foam so if they do puncture, they won't flood.
Multiple cavity's is also good. You don't want a single cell that can fail.

Also, are you allowed to build anything on a dock or pilings?

I'm going to build a sauna that's going to be registered as a boat so I can drive around with it. Also becaudse I'm not allowed to build so close to the sea as I want.
I'm going to keep it afloat with two old cylindrical diesel tanks, both 3m^3 which I aquired to cheap, I think they were 50€ each. Cut them in half and I'll have a few tonnes of floating power with a good margin as the whole thing is planned to be quite light.

Rusting is not really a problem because of zinc and baltic sea.

I'll follow your thread with interest.

Hm. Could you build a "barn" and have electricity (for heating the livestock) and water (for watering the livestock) run to it?
>>
>>1031510
Nice.
Use the law.
>" well, ya theres a loft upstairs. Many times the cows have issues calving and I have to assist- which means long nights waiting to make sure my $7,000 black Angus isn't in distress."

>"well I don't have any cows right now per se, but I plan to in the future and built the barn accordingly..."
