I've never posted here before, but I could use some advice. I know nothing about cars. at all... but the clutch in my 99 honda civic went out. lazy mechanic friend told me it was the master cylinder and left. He was supposed to help me but didnt. So I watched a bunch of Youtube videos and replaced the damn thing myself. I got it in there and miraculously didnt break anything in the process. I am now trying to bleed the line. Im familiar with the basics of this process, but when I have someone pump and hold the clutch, I turn he bleed valve bolt and it squirts fluid then drips. I did this for at least an hour today and used almost a bottle of brake fluid before taking a break. The clutch only comes halfway up now compared to sitting on the floor as before, and there is pressure. Do I need to keep up the same process? Am I doing something wrong? any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
>>
I thing u opening the line to much and letting air back in when it dribbles try and just to say open the bleed valve and close it
>>
>>1030162
Thanks, that sounds about right. Ill give it a try.
>>
>>1030163
How long / how much brake fluid should it take? like 30 min or so?

Start posting in Honda forums. /diy/ is a forum for people who don't know the other sort exist.

Different cars have different bleeding methods which work best.

>I turn he bleed valve bolt and it squirts fluid then drips.

The valve should fully stop fluid release when closed. There will be residual drips. I like the "clear plastic tube into jar of fluid" method when bleeding clutch or brake cylinders.

Search the above forums and you should find what you need. I'm not a Honda car specialist.

Thanks, however I meant when I open the valve it squirts then drips, then i close it. it doesnt drip when closed
>>
>>1030165
Also will be using clear plastic tube tomorrow

either you arent doing it right or something fucked up
A clutch line should only take 2-3 times to be fully air free
you dont let the line dribble for any length of time, it squirts and you tighten it back up for the next pump. Dont let the pedal up before you retighten the bleeder either as this will pull air into the bleeder

>Dont let the pedal up before you retighten the bleeder either as this will pull air into the bleeder
Im really anal about that.
Also letting it squirt then tighten is something i havent been doing, thanks man

It should take until you get proper clutch action. Some clutches SUCK. Depends on where your trapped air is.

Note the remarks on gravity bleeding and using a hose.

http://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/98-civic-clutch-hydraulic-bleeding-help-3012991/

You can bleed a hydraulic system at any point in the system. Air tends to rise and you can bleed by loosening and tightening a fitting as you would a bleed screw.

Don't open bleeder screws very far, just open enough to pass fluid.

I've gravity bled many used trucks where we did cab swaps and disconnected many brake and clutch hydraulic lines. It works surprisingly well and is very low effort.

I've had to vacuum bleed very few vehicles. Stick with it, you will win eventually. Good you for trying to do your own work! It gets easier over time.

Think of bleeding as a process of ejaculation, and not because this is 4chan.

Stroke pedal rapidly then hold it down.
Open nipple and as your load tapers off, close the nipple.

Release pedal and check for clutch action. If no joy/insufficient joy, repeat.

Definitely something im not used too, but I feel accomplished just getting the thing in there.
>>
>>1030180
I love the way you so delicately worded that
top kek + good advice
>>
>>1030182
You ARE accomplished!

Every gearhead starts somewhere and we all remember where we began. No one came out of pussy with a wrench in their hand.

BTW now you have a new place to spend internet time. Hondas are excellent vehicles and hitting their forums is a great way to learn.

There are fora for damn near every /diy/ subject.

Have fun and persevere.

oddly inspiring

Since this thread is about dead, I'd like to thank this community for the most useful advice ive gotten in ages. Well done 4chan.

The specialty boards are great, man.
/diy/ and /tg/ for example; boards with a greater signal:noise ratio.
Good luck with your clutch.
Tell you hwut, driving stick has been a boon to my poor ass. Last year, first gear went out in my shitbox Saturn. Fuck it, guess I'm starting in second, sorry everyone behind me at this super finicky red light. Gave me enough time to save up for a trip to the tranny shop.

I will never own another automatic. Since I figured stick out, its been 100% more reliable
>>
>>1030159
>I did this for at least an hour today
fuck, i use a pneumatic bleeder and it takes no more than 2 mins.
>>
>>1031248
Best investment of my life.

Pretty sure OP will figure it out from the other posts, but pretty sure he was just leaving bleeder open too long/opened too much.

But just to verify, op you're bleeding off of the slave cylinder (at the transmission) not the master (at the firewall attached to the pedal) right?

I've seen weird setups before, just asking.
>>
put a rubber hose from the bleeder nipple to the bottom of a plastic waterbottle with an inch of fluid. crack the bleeder nipple open, pump the pedal in the car and add fluid every 5 pumps to the reservoir. after about 30-40 pumps tighten the bleeder nipple and pull off the rubber hose.

that's ALL you need. anything beyond that is a waste of money.
