I'm building a fallout shelter. What's the best way to build a strong shelter whilst keeping the cost relatively low. I have 30 square meters to work with maximum as that's the limit before I'd need to get planning permission here in the UK. Feel free to make plans on paint or whatever and post them here.
>>
Seriously? You build it out of reinforced concrete underground or the radiation will still cook you, you dummy. There is no low cost alternative or it wouldn't be a fallout shelter.
>>
>>1029498
dirt is an ok alternative actually.
water too i guess

they are both relatively cheap

Everything you need to know about building fallout shelters including examples is in the internet.

Why are you asking here? Yes, really. Too lazy to Google?

Check out the Internet Archive. When nuclear war was likely, the US government performed atmospheric nuclear testing and validated fallout and blast shelter designs. ("Duck and cover" wasn't a joke. If you are not too close to fry a blast wave can still spray you with broken glass and rubble just like a car bomb.)

Now go do your homework. It's interesting stuff and you'll learn some history.

Fallout shelters are not blast shelters. Fallout shelters do not need to be made from reinforced concrete. They do, however, need to be far away enough from blast zones to survive.

You need to study NBC warfare to figure out if building a shelter makes sense. If you live near a target city or base you are better off moving away from an attack as fast as possible and keep going.

The Cold War is over so the risk of strategic nuclear war is trivial. Your time would be better spent improving your life to understand what is LIKELY to threaten your health and safety. I'm a Cold War vet who spent enough time learning about nuclear war to laugh at noob prepping but know how to prep properly. (The result of that is I don't prepare for strategic nuclear war. I prepare for common natural disasters like hurricanes instead.)

If you want an excuse to build an extended basement workshop then do that instead. If you live in a tornado zone build a fucking tornado shelter which is not a fallout shelter. A fallout shelter can be a robust aboveground shelter with sealed doors and windows plus a filtration system and airlock. The military had portable kits for that purpose.

If the media made you afraid, read how they profit from your ignorance. You might want to get into the fearfag writing biz yourself:

Not him, but I am curious: are the odds of nuclear exchange really that low? China and Russia both seem pretty testy.

And while north Korea is a joke, it's hard for me to say how much of that is real and notAmerican overconfidence.
>>
>>1030395
It didn't happen during the Cold war. The current situation is nothing when compared to it.
>American overconfidence
Wouldn't be a surprise if USA used nukes first.

>>1029511
Yeah, pretty much anything is ok against radiation if you have enough of it.
>>
>>1030395
>China and Russia both seem pretty testy.

No, they don't if you study how propaganda works and NEVER take what any politician says at face value.

China and Russia want MONEY. People don't commit nuclear suicide for money because you don't get money and you die.

China wants economic expansion and Russia has severe economic problems due to sanctions and to Russian cultural inability to create a free, secular non-gangster government. Russia relies on oil sales tot the EU for economic survival.

North Korea are one of the sanest governments on planet earth. It's a game the Norks have played for decades. It makes the Sorks nervous, and since Koreans are stupid the South usually falls for it and sends the North aid after they cut a deal. It's a cyclic relationship. Great fun to study!

Noobs are fearful because our culture stokes fear. Fear feeds on noob igorance, paranoia, religion, and marketing! There's money and clickbait at stake!

Preppers rarely know why they prep. Most are complete military illiterates and have no desire to cure their ignorance. In their fantasy, they are somehow worth killing so they must defend themselves.

Reality is no one else gives a fuck. Readiness for crime or civil unrest can make sense, bu fixed fortifications don't work very well without firepower and mobility. Preppers rarely study real urban warfare.

SHTF would look like Syria, but nobody revolts without cause and there is NOTHING about current Western society bothersome enough to revolt over. Ignore edgelord teens. They are stupid, end of story and fuck their angst too.

>I'm building a fallout shelter
Sure you are, faggot.
>>
>>1029486
Bumping for interest. What have you considered so far OP? Are you building underground? Excavating a basement or a standalone garden shelter?
>>
>>1029498
Packed earth is as good as concrete, and water is better than concrete. Covering it in water barrels is a great idea, because you can use the water, and by the time you've used more than a barrel or two, the radiation will have dropped to safe levels.

You don't need to use reinforced concrete, because a fallout shelter is designed for just that: Fallout. You're not going to be able to build something in your back yard that'll survive a nuclear blast.
>>
>>1029512
Those inflatable fallout shelters are neat aren't they.
>>
>>1030457
I'm a half assed prepper. It's more of a just in case hedge. Its noce to go broke for a week or two and not have to worry about whats for dinner though. Cheap peice of mind and a hobby really.
>>
>>1032814
If you were mad enough to build a fallout shelter is not much of a jump to a bunker that can survive an indirect blast, if you bury it deep enough you just need to surround it with gravel to absorb the shockwave, concrete will just crack.
A huge number of bunkers built in the cold war era wouldn't have survived a direct hit which is why they were secret. Bunker busting bombs can do serious fucking damage, it's not even worth trying to defend against direct hits
>>
>>1030457
>and to Russian cultural inability to create a free, secular non-gangster government.
How is this different from the US? We're about to elect a federal criminal or sleazy "businessman" who is being forced to close his casinos into the oval office...

The areas where the blast would be a problem are small in comparison to the areas where a fallout shelter would be useful. Pic related. When blast protection isn't needed, even a relatively simple and cheap shelter would do.
>wouldn't have survived a direct hit which is why they were secret.
An even huger number of cold war era fallout bunkers were for civilians and they certainly were not secret or blast-proof.

If you're going to burn your time and money on prepping, the first sane step would be to make a realistic list of the expected threats and then allocate your money and effort accordingly. Nuke wars and bunker buster bombs shouldn't be anywhere near the top of your list.
>>
Different anon here. I unfortunately live within a blast zone In both the 100 and 250 device cold war projections, as I live in a transportation center that has had military significance since before the civil war, and has since also provided power for a good percentage of the SE. To be honest, the dot is in my front yard.
>>
>>1034014
Sometimes its better not to block the punch, but to dodge it. If this is really a concern of yours then move. Unless you plan to put that bucker 100 feet down and have the stones to live there for a couple of years until the fallout in your area has subsided moving is the best option.

This is what you should do.

Surviving a full scale nuclear war is not realistic. Nuclear survival plans should be focusing on dirty bombs, nuclear plant disasters, etc.

Chattanooga area?
>>
>>1034384
Perhaps. It doesn't help being between a major military base and oak ridge...
>>
>>1034505
The area is littered with caves. I know of three caves in Jackson County AL that were purposed as fall out shelters during the cold war. There is still one being semi maintained. Last time I visited it dates on some of the supplies were 2012. Can't get a clear answer on if it is a government or private venture. It is on public wildlife management area and when I questioned a game warden he denied any knowledge of it although I suspect was a lie. It is well known to the locals the military occasionally has a presence in the area at times, but this too is eerily hush hush when you press for answers. I could start a hell of a /x/ thread one day with the stories....
>>
>>1034512
Hell, through about '02, the USAF supersonic test loop went over where I lived. They changed the loop to mostly over the ocean because of complaints though...

But yes, there are several caves that are prepared as bombardment shelters, including the lost sea cavern. If you've ever been there, they have a half mile vaulted tunnel entrance. Ruby falls cavern is also a maintained shelter with 20+ stories of dirt above it, and elevator access with a dead drop slab over the shaft. As far as other caves and abandoned mines, I am unsure as to the specifics of.

If we broaden the search to just fallout, my house is fallout resistant with foot thick poured concrete walls, there are hundreds of technically un-explored caves in the cliffs of the mountains, as well as remnants of coal mines. All of those are fallout resistant.

Why even bother. Who would even want to live in a post nuclear apocalypse world? Better to just let the atomic blasts take you away peacefully than to suffer the rest of your life.
>>
>>1035980

Cause post-apocalyptic life is just like Fallout 1 and 2 hopefully, duh.

How high cost can pouring concrete be? Some rebar, and shit? I estimate under 5 grand in materials. Why couldn't you pour it yourself?
