How do I connect an old LCD laptop screen to a Raspberry Pi? Is there a way to do it without using a controller board?

No
And not only that, laptop manufacturers intentionally make what you are trying to do difficult by each using their own standard.

get a generic lcd controller board off the interent for liek 12 bux and that has hdmi

Will it work for any LCD laptop screen?

the sellers on ebay for these normally have compatibility lists, or they say to contact thema nd they will look up your lcd number for you and then pick out the controller that will work.

>without additional conversion
only parallel interface, everything else needs conversion to run from a Pi
>where from
parallel display interface is used only on smaller stuff, like car GPS and cheap mini.TVs
>laptop panel
older ones are almost guaranteed to be open LDI over LVDS, needs conversion.
New stuff can be eDP, which is Display Port with a different plug. For raspi, you need conversion as well.
