When you consider how fast this game was released it's not too surprising. CH always cuts corners because of their low budgets, especially when it's a new, untested IP like this one.

It's a little more complex than that, it depends a lot on what exactly you're producing, how you're going about producing it, and what skills you already have under your belt.

But in general, I'd agree that 3D is certainly more lucrative if you're starting from scratch. Static renders don't require much "skill" at all, especially if you're just buying/downloading pre-made assets. You're just doing the computer equivalent of posing dolls in a diorama, the only real barrier to entry is learning the basics of whichever software you choose (read: spending a few days watching YouTube tutorial videos).

Good animation is time consuming and requires a reasonable degree of skill, the time/reward ratio is just way too low for it to be lucrative at a not-producing-absolute-shit level. Not that this stops some folks from producing garbage while holding their hands out ... nor does it stop anyone from dropping cash in those hands. I'd say there's maybe only 2-4 size animators who seem to care about trying to make "good" animations.
