It varies depending on who's writing, of course.

Some like magic, some like pseudoscience.

I'm partial to nanites that are part of a robot's self-maintenance processes. They are able to reconstruct nearly the entire robot, as long as they have access to raw materials. My idea is the nanites can be overzealous with their repairs, and so they are usually administered with many precautions to avoid human contact. But if there is human contact, the nanites study the shape of the person, deeming it similar enough to a robot's, but 'broken' in the sense that it isn't synthetic. So the nanites work overtime changing the body from the inside out, converting organs into appropriate synthetic analogues.

Personal preference will see the subject still resembles their human form albeit with a robotic look into it (exposed skin become metallic etc). Kinda similar with the one in OP.

The mechas they merged with may shown in stages with more weapons/armor being formed depending on situation, which final form may look like Asuka's Synthesis here. In Kuroyukihime's case, this may be her battle form and when in defensive, her form may change to one with more armored parts in place of those exposed skins.

Prefer to retain the face - with robotic features - eyes either empty or glowing and emotionless expression. Generally I'm a sucker for human-like robots overall.

I can sympathize - I'm the same way with pregnancy. Whenever I see it, it feels like it completely dominates the image/story and I can't get into it. I think that's actually quite logical. The thing about robotization is that it's a TF where the final product usually closely resembles the original despite drastic implied alterations. A quit warning, might be a little disappoitng as a lot of it unfortunately happens before the event as its trying to prevent that future. There is sadly little actual transformation art after future ends 0 but there is at least a robo plastique trying to hunt down the protagonist.

This plus the first of batman beyond 2015 where the first couple chapters end the futures end story.(http://readcomiconline.to/Comic/Batman-Beyond-2015/Issue-4?id=24072#17) Has some insane jokers want to get robotized though its pretty brutal.

Like I said wish their was more art or at least stories on this (and final crisis anti life but thats a different thread). I still want a concept art for the creatures like the robot batgirl spotlight thing
