I'm conflicted, people.

While I can appreciate the asthetics of gyaru somewhat, I still have trouble finding what's hot about ganguro, even though on some primal level, I do. And the problem with it is that it's often the only reliable way to have piercings, or more flashy underwear colors like neon green, or slutty underwear/normalwear. And I guess it also means loose morals, or no morals, which I just don't find translating into reality.

It feels to me gyarus and ganguros started as something like me idealizing them being free and less restrained, or less caring about what society wants of them. So it's sad to just see them automatically as turbosluts.

Is there any ganguro art where they're not being massive whores?

I think you are confused here, Gyaru is just a term of fashion concious girls, Ganguro is the term for the original 90s fashion trend, which is actually a bit lighter than most of the stuff called Ganguro in these threads, most of what is in these threads are the modern equivilent of Ganguro, Yamanba and Manba, which are much more darker and more of an emphasis in exaggerated makeup and neon color hair and cloths.

Actually, you are half right, and half wrong there, it did start as a sort of rebellion, but not for the reasons you mentioned. It was more teenagers and young adults that were sick of the extremes of japanese traditions so they decided to adopt a style that was the polar opposite of japanese views of what a proper japanese person should be. It wasn't about looking unsexy (at least among their own peers) but about rejecting japanese standards of beauty and proper behavior, Also the makeup styles were based on japanese folklore and how evil spirits would sometimes be depicted in kubuki and noh performances, corruption is pretty much at the root of the whore thing.
