But box cutters don't go real deep for the most part—not compared to a proper knife. To be fair, I've never actually held a box cutter where the blade extends as seems to be standard for what they sell in Japan, but it seems like the maximum blade length would be... what? Three? Four inches if we're being super generous? Sure, that's generally long enough, but I sort of doubt most models would even be that long.

Simultaneously, I find it hard to believe most households wouldn't have a knife with a six inch blade minimum.

I'll certainly grant the sharpness thing, though; but now that I've thought about it a bit more, I think it's probably more that you can carry a box cutter around with you without people getting very suspicious, which you can't really do outside of a kitchen with a knife.
