That's an option. The alternative is to ask the guy who made the sprites if he can export them in a format that's supported by more softwares. Like TIFF.
Otherwise, you're like me, you're stuck to use the base sprites. They're good enough for most works, but if you go deep, you'll need more.

TIFF doesn't support transparency, which is probably why they were saved in PSD in the first place. PNG however does, and other softwares should be able to read it, correctly interpreting the transparency too.

Like I said, Minna would punish Lynette and Yoshika for going too easy on me, probably with the same brush they failed to properly utilize.
