I've only started writing there a few months ago myself. When I started out I had the same reservations as you but as it turns out you can pretty much submit entries whenever you want. I don't think people really care much for rules on that site considering the large amount of garbage level entries that get added. It's common etiquette to add prompts of your own along with an open ended "Something Else" choice though.

All you have to do is click a blank option and add your story and submit. You can even be anonymous and leave your name blank if you want.

I don't really know any techniques or anything like that, so the best thing I can think of to suggest would be to just go back over what you've written after you've had some time away from it (distance always helps with being critical), try to decide what you like about the content, and then spend some time trying to think of ways to flesh it out. Maybe look for samples of others' writing you like that are more fleshed out, and consider the ways they sort of make the content feel fuller without just making it seem padded if you're having trouble thinking of ways to do so with your own writing.

You're on the right track, it's just something you kind of have to work at.
