Yeah the translations have been done for almost a year but the typesetting fell pretty far behind. The original typesetter couldn't really continue much due to work / health issues / lack of interest so I kinda took over. It's my first time doing it but I am otherwise proficient in photoshop.

Most of the tastes here are pretty diverse, with a lot of different niches of the niche showing up.

Argument mostly seems to start when someone decides that his particular niche of the fetish is the one true one, and starts telling everyone else to get off the thread.

I don't think that argument is really valid.

If a manga doesn't count as gb just because it doesn't explicitly and visually show the transformation itself, then I don't think written material and stories should count either. And that's just silly.

What makes it gb is one thing: it involves a character who has explicitly transformed from one gender to another. A comic doesn't have to show the transformation taking place, or even show the persons life beforehand, as long as it at least narrates or provides some insight into their feelings about transforming, and makes it clear that a transformation did in fact take place.

Personally, I don't care too much about transformation sequences myself. They can be nice, but what I'm really reading or watching for is the sense of transformation itself. I'm perfectly fine with the classic "you wake up one morning as a girl" premise (in fact, I actually kind of like it in a "rebirth" kind of way). As long as I like the designs, and the story gives me a nice sense of what the character is going through, I'm happy.

I'll take good storytelling over visual presentation most of the time when it comes to this fetish because it tends to be the crucial aspect of it.
If you only have the visuals but the transformed character is basically interchangeable with any other hentai girl once you omit the first few pages where he transformed (as in, there is really nothing in the story later that references or takes advantadge of this being a former guy) then I may just as well grab a random doujin drawn by a better artist or written by a better writer which features a regular girl.

The manga ranks pretty highly amongst my favourites and I had all but given up and just downloaded the translations (without even having the RAWs).

I really hope the artist revisits doing TG stories at some times in the future because I think he manages to pull off the comedy quite well without neglecting character development (a pitfall too many TG manga artist doing it for laughs tend to fall into)

I also liked that they didn't go with some cheap gags that make the genderbent protagonist look like an idiot, like not knowing how to use the toilet as a woman or thinking that menstruation is some sort of mysterious and fatal disease.

Not saying it's bad, only that it's unusual to see when it comes to gender bending. Most stories normally end when the former man has completely adjusting to being a girl so it's hard to compare.

Even in the examples you mention there is still a heavy emphasis on the character adjusting to having become a woman, even if it is finite and irreversable (while Mai didn't have the certainty of it which ironically added an additional layer of anxiety to her development).

Having read other stories where the "Before" aspect gets ignored or barely deemed worthy of more than one chapter I tend to find that people who complain about the lack of "flashback/before" chapters are often missing the point of this stories or are maybe enjoying them for a different reason.
I agree that the character development and struggle itself post-transformation is more important and I think pre-transformation info can be actually detrimental (read: filler) if handled poorly, albeit it being able to add more layers to the story if handled properly.
Ruuen Rouga, despite being mostly a hentai artist, tends to handle setting up the before and the after quite nicely when he has space/time to develop his stories, for example, but lately it seems he doesn't get the panel-time to do so.

I feel the same way about the before/after. For example, the first chapter of Kashimashi has its protagonist be a man, but then after she turns into a girl she immediately adjusts to life as a woman and never experiences any internal or external conflict over her transformation so, as you previously said, if they had skipped the first chapter one almost wouldn't be able to realize that this was a genderbending story. I too feel that how the protagonist adjusts to and deals with their new condition is more interesting than the transformation itself or what their life was like beforehand.

There are a few others when it comes to using TG for comedy that mismanage it IMHO but I can excuse those as that often isn't the core aspect of the show. If anything, the fact everyone, even all the classmates at the protagonist's school, behaved as if she had always been a woman stretched my suspension of disbelief. You'd expect at least one person in the city to get weirded out by the protagonist's transformation.

I agree that Kampfer as well as Ore Twintails handle the genderbending badly, but I think those were also bad series in general. As for Ranma, I find it to be overrated though it was better than the aforementioned series. Many people seem to consider it to be the ultimate genderbending story, but that's probably because it's so well-known and because it was the first genderbending series they saw/read. As you say it doesn't really delve into the psychological effects of the transformation on Ranma and he treats turning into a girl either as an inconvenience or a disguise. Of course the genderbending element was only secondary to the martial arts parody and to the harem aspect of the series so one can't really fault it for that, but that does emphasize the fact that Ranma wasn't primarily about the genderbening. Also its story and characters were shallow in general so one shouldn't expect the story to develop them.

Non-Hentai (and this is my personal taste speaking):
- Ame Nochi Hare
- Kanojo Ni Naru Hi (and its spinoff)
- Remix Heart (though I think MaiOlev overrates it a bit it's got a solid foundation)
- Tea Of Sagittarius (featuring Kyonko) ; probably the best fancomic I have ever written and has some TG writing I have seen in doujins/manga featuring that fetish. Most chapters are SFW and with the exception of one none feature sex but it's still one of the best examples of how to write a TG story right.

Those are the top tier. For lesser examples that I believe are still worth reeading but can be hit or miss:
- Osananajimi wa Onna no Ko ni Naare (has pretty good balance of comedy while having some minor dramatic moments/slice-of-life sections)
- Boku Girl (overrated over at /a/ as it has its fair share of problems but still one of the better manga to come out recently)
- Futaba-Kun Change (oldie but goodie; mostly focused on comedy though)
- Fukigen Cinderella (sadly has a rushed ending but had some decent development going on)
- Most stories published in the "Change H" anthologies (sadly the magazine is no more so no new stories started there)

As for hentai stories:
- Anything by Ruuen Rouga; I have yet to read a story by him I didn't like (with maybe the exception of post-volume 2 of his "Nyotaika" series)
- Michael Keikaku; one of the earliest examples of well-written character development in a hentai TG story and to this day my benchmark to compare most such hentai stories (provided they are meant to last past one single chapter). Solid writing, outstanding art.
- ShindoL's TSF (goes sometimes into territories I do not personally enjoy but the art and writing are well done)

I kind of like the idea of a gb/tg series like Remix Heart, which transitions into an action fantasy/sci-fi adventure after the hero/heroine feels comfortable with their gender.

Problem, I'd have to actually like the setting and characters beyond the gb element, which is rare for manga and games these days.

Case in point: I feel like I'd be all over Remix Heart, but I don't really like Blazblue as a game (fighting game fan here, never found BB too fun, personal taste) or as a story/setting (I kinda liked CT's visual novel/fighter mash up, but with each new installment it just felt more and more like a clusterfuck to me. I have a hard time caring about that setting at this point).

It's your typical shounen shit of "fight to rule the school" but everybody seems to have super powers at that particular school. Lots of delinquents on one end and a student council with at least one member bent on murdering them. The main character has the ability to swap people's genders, and ends up getting dragged into things on the delinquent's side because one of the council members in the school war has some type of succubus-like ability where she can control or otherwise harm guys, but girls are immune. Can't remember for sure, and that's about all that sticks out in my mind since I was waiting for it to build up a backlog for me to burn through later. One of the head delinquents was an absolutely massive dude that I think was basically invincible, but when the MC used his ability on him he got turned into a dainty girl.

The problem is that often gag mangas are build on status quo and baby steps in character development so as to not make it hard for newcomers to get the jokes and avoid upsetting the apple cart.

It's a shame, because the artist is both talented and has a knack for doing fun and enjoyable TG stories and could have make it go on for at least another volume.

The start to Osananajimi's epilogue came very close to ruining my evening. Thank God it was all wishful thinking by Sylphie.

While I'm really annoyed with 'status quo' endings for a bunch of reasons, the fact that it doesn't do the whole 'former-boy falls in love with a boy' thing is enough to make it a satisfying ending regardless.

Also, Miyu's upset face whenever Iori turns into a girl is absolutely adorable.

I think the "guy falls in love with former male best friend" routine feels a bit overdone, but I really like it when the genderbent character does start being attracted to girls and decides to live as a woman. Though I'd rather see the character be attracted to a man that didn't know the character before her transformation as that encourages the character to be more feminine.

I thought that Osananajimi had a shallow premise, uninteresting characters, unfunny jokes and a disappointing non-ending. All in all, this wasn't a manga I enjoyed reading. Even if the epilogue had been real, it would have felt really forced and thus have been pretty uninteresting.

My favorite is genderbent guy falling for FtM genderbent girl. You get the heterosexual sex without any of the homosexual awkwardness. I guess it's the most common result with a body swap but sometimes they just do gender swap and it works too.

I liked Osananajimi for the light teasing and Iori becoming acclimated to being a girl in certain ways and enjoying some of the benefits.

I am actually somewhat surprised that straight guy --> bisexual girl isn't more common. I would figure it would be more popular given that it would allow for both hetero and yuri scenes.

This, so Goddamn much. I wouldn't be nearly as salty if my niche wasn't so bizarrely rare. It just really irks me that it's not hard to even accidentally come across scat, guro, vore, or other weird stuff, but porn featuring a guy becoming a girl and NOT getting dicked? Damn near unheard of.

I'm kinda sorta okay with identity death, or at least some mental change.

My personal ideal (and I don't want to argue about whether this is possible or what it would really entail, just the fetish/fantasy) is that the gb'd character becomes a "true girl" mentally and physically, yet parts of their personality and ideals remain unchanged.

IE the heroic knight in shining armor is still virtuous and self sacrificing even after being turned into a princess. The quiet nerdy dreamer turns into a shy girl who still loves reading, etc.

Some things change while others remain the same.
