Honestly thats just common courtesy. Not only to the reader but the artist as well. If you're going to hamfistedly slap a story onto a picture you can at least learn how to write one first. A lot of captions are putting text over the image now as opposed to just beside it, and distasteful as that may be as long as its well written then at least they havent effectively just smeared shit on it. If you dont know how to write, you probably shouldnt be posting captions. Thats why captions are getting a bad name, (well that and the pedo), if youre going to twist someones art to meet your specific view of it, you can at least learn how to do it justice before you do.

The thing to remember when putting a caption on an image is that the text has to compete visually with a picture. Use color, outlines, eye-catching fonts--even multiple fonts if you have the patience. The formatting is actually more or less what I meant, too, though in a different way. Unless you've got a 4K monitor or some shit, you're not going to be able to read that without scrolling back and forth every line. If it's that much harder to read a caption than it would be to present the text in a format that automatically wraps to fit a window (say, a .txt or a pastebin), it shouldn't be a caption.

But yeah, you're right about that paragraph. That's pretty ridiculous, too.

I am not an expert at MSPaint or even an amateur. I only caption the images myself because nobody else will do it if I ask. You should really use a more legible font. Sans serif fonts that are quite bold are the best, in general, assuming they aren't too out there. Nothing wrong with using something a little more interesting than Arial; but the more text there is, the more you have to worry about readability. Your readers are going to have to strain their eyes with thinner, scriptier, and/or wiggier fonts.

Same thing with size and color. Your text is too small, even at full magnification, which also increases eye strain; as does making the text color similar to the background. It's not illegibly close to the background color, but it would be far easier to read if it were white on black (or any light, non-blue color (blue tends to increase eye strain, as well)).

I've got an example of what I'd consider a good one. Obviously, font should be more regular and not unreadable. Your dialogue style is very abrupt and doesn't flow very well. I can gauge what you were trying to go for but it doesn't work very well, especially not for the image. Smooth and elegant work much better. A greater focus on detail and action would work out better in this case, description from the point of view of the male or perhaps a third person view. Some captions fair well with just a setup like yours, but in this case I believe a more descriptive scenario would have worked well.

that sounds like a lot of fairly specific stuff you easily could have specified in your request. if someone just asks for a caption, the assumption is the person in the picture is speaking if you thought something else would suit it better, you should generally say so rather then depending on someone else to read your mind.

That's partially true, however I think there's a general standard that most captions should meet. My criticisms are of your style, but of your failure to meet that standard. Style can deviate based on what the requester asks for, but standards should be held up. What I meant in my critique was that your style was stuttered in general and could be improved upon. The captions I post never had their requests so specifically tailored. The writer is the one who takes a general idea and expresses it eloquently.

The problem with the fonts that anon is referring to as "silly" is that they AREN'T easily readable. Nobody's saying you have to use Arial, but if you want somebody to read more than a few words, it should be in a VERY easily legible font. You aren't going to impress anybody with your visual creativity if they're squinting. That means no serif fonts, no script fonts, and no chickenscratch fonts, no matter how neat they may look. There are countless free variations of comic fonts out there that are highly legible and that can convey all sorts of moods. If you really want to get creative with your fonts (and if you're serious about typesetting or captioning, you should really look into it), go out and browse some free font sites.

Otherwise just stick to bold, legible, simple fonts.

Hello bitches, as the butt boy who wrote pic related >>7045184 allow me to butt in on the matter, though I am very drunk at the moment, so take everything with a grain of salt.

My friend, the obvious issues with this caption >>7045141 are easily fixed, the less obvious are less easily fixed.

- The use of negative space.
It is important for readability to use negative space to segment different parts of the picture. Your text is squished riiiiight up against the picture, which draws the eye away from your text, back to the picture. For obvious reasons, this is not ideal. Next time, try any make the space on the left and right of the text equal, or average out as equal. Give it a letter or three worth of space between the picture and the text.

- Font
I don't know what font you're using, but it's terrible. Filled with little holes and weird spacing, and the Ys are all fucked up. It makes it really hard to read. I know how alluring those fancier fonts are. Resist that urge and go for a modern, average font to improve readability.

- Paragraphs
Look at all that space at the end of your text there. Good job on keeping the text concise, I am terrible at that. However, you aren't using any of the space you've freed up by being short winded. Slap a few Enters in your work to separate the different stages of this dialog.

- Other mistakes
There are several spelling and punctuation mistakes I can spot with a cursory glance while drunk. I'm sure there are more. Fix yo shit. Secondarily, bottom left corner of the black box. What is that little fuck up there? If you leave those in, it makes it seem like you don't give a fuck.


You can fix all these problems in 5 minutes in GIMP. Hell, I don't even need the original file and I can fix these mistakes in 5 minutes. People care when it looks like you give a fuck about the end product. People enjoy your work more when it looks like you give a fuck.
