There is something I don't get though. The Evocati Augusti were the personal guards of the Caesar, and the Immortals were the personal guards of Persian Emperors. Both were slave societies, so there's an obvious parallel there.

It's eye opening. I and people in general tend to take the shortest paths when a location is already known. When the path to getting shit done is too zig-zaggy, we'll unconsciously find the place annoying. And conversely when long straight paths and few turns will make an area more pleasant.
You wouldn't think it a big deal, but simply moving a door a few tiles, or watching where you place an impassable plant or barrel can make a real difference.

Sadly, no. The ability to do so a couple versions ago was a bug. FC dev has stated multiple times that it's "not realistically feasible" due to the game world's timeframe relative to ours. Same goes for giving XY slaves breedable vaginas.

Already replied to the same question on the blog. Short answer: "no".
FC Dev doesn't think it "realistic" for females to obtain functional penises/testicles within the game's time frame, despite all the other "not quite feasible at the moment" things that are already in the game. He's basically not going to do it, no matter how much we might want that option.
So if that's a dealbreaker for you, either play 0.4.6 and abuse the bug, or wait until FC Dev makes a final version and beg someone else to mod it so you can replicate the effect.

Post corporate warfare, 6 unhealthy, angry slaves for 40k ish isn't game breaking, nor 2-3 good slaves, nor one medium-high profile (a local activist/journalist/chieftain whatever). You could lose rep for fucking it up, or underfunding.
Here's the steel donut issue with FS: if you want to see anything other than basic gameplay, you have to put up with the quests, pretty much all of which don't just feature but SHOWCASE steel donuts. I think that's essentially the dev team's implementation scheme for donations - paid stuff gets added into the game as romanceable NPCs or quests or both.
The thing I personally find fascinating about FS, from the game design perspective, is that the game has gotten so bit it's now up against Inform7's data limit. There is literally nothing more that can be added to FS without disabling some old content, which means every new addition requires something to be removed. As a consequence, the dev team is attempting to switch engines and building a Flash version.
The irony of going from a format you've literally outgrown to one that is dying is just too delicious to ignore.
"Steel donut" is a reference to the "original character, do not steal" phrase initially attached to some awful piece of fanon (in the Sonic universe IIRC). The vast majority of NPCs added to crowdfunded or crowdsourced fetish games falls squarely into that category: awfully thought-out or poorly designed rip-offs of popular existing intellectual property, complete with cardboard-cutout-tier interactions and/or protected by the "what do you mean the player should have an option to kill my precious self-insert" game mechanics.
To be fair, this kind of content can be found in pretty much all media, since all of it depends on the efforts of creator(s) and is therefore motivation-driven. The less something is a "high-quality production", though, the more obviously such content stands out.

An army of Arcology owners without the crippling defects present in the ones at auction is an enormous benefit.

Of course, you'll probably run into legal (or trust) issues trying to sell a product with content made by an online generator, even if you claim it's just placeholder art. But if it's just a free release thing...happy fapping I suppose.

Now that same strategy is letting me only lose 1000~ FC-cash a week. The recent merc upkeep price change has made multiple earlier strategies problematic. On top of that, certain slave options now carry steep prices and add up when applied to multiple slaves at once - hormonal treatments, preventatives for old slaves / cows / working girls, luxurious living standards. To save cash, prioritize hormones because they increase obedience and can improve attributes, then swap them out for luxurious accommodations when slaves hit high devotion (at which point they'll defer to your judgment on their appearance).
Maids (subordinate servants) used to be my go-to for reducing upkeep, but each of them only shaves a few hundred credits off the top (beyond her own costs). Besides this, they don't actually contribute to income, so you'll have a harder time getting to the point where your investments can cover your expenses, which means that the jobs that actually bring in credits should be your priority now. I suppose it might be possible to significantly bring down upkeep costs if you go all-in on the maids, but you would probably need a LOT of them, and getting them all to high devotion values will take time that you don't really have in the early game.
Cows are great, but not for XY (trap-filled) settings. Game code thinks "vagina = boost milking income". Gelding alone doesn't help, which means shemales need to get SRS for maximum milk effectiveness.
Whoring is probably better for income in the short term because it's relatively inexpensive to start up. Sure, cranking up a slave's attributes for maximum income will take time/drugs/effort, but so will waiting for a cow to grow large enough (assuming you're not micro-managing her growth and health).
Finally, there's always the option to play the slave market - buy low, fix health&traits/break in/train, sell high. My own playthroughs generally skew closer to the "nice master" side, though, so I can't really advise you there.
