The planet Thanagar is inhabited by a race of winged humanoids. On this planet, there is a hidden island called Themyscira, where a group of warrior women called the Amazons live in secret. One day, a Thanagarian soldier named Katar Trevoar crashed his spacecraft onto the mysterious island by accident. He was discovered by the princess of the Amazons, Diena Hol. She cared for his wounds, while he told her stories of both Thanagar and the larger galactic community. Eventually, the two fell in love, married, and became a crime fighting duo.
Pursuit of an elusive intergalactic criminal brought the two of them to the planet Earth, where they vowed to remain until their quarry was found. This took many years, and while the criminal was eventually apprehended, Katar and Diena grew attached to the planet and decided to stay on Earth permanently. Diena took on the alias of Wonder Hawk and fell in with a group of extralegal superheroes known as the Justice Titans, while her husband Katar found employment with the U.S. Government's A.R.G.U.S. division.

GL-Batman has a book dedicated to his origin called "Blackest Knight". The others were just created to fill out the Justice League on the world where that book took place.
The Blackest Knight story does include a Sinestro/Joker combo for the villain though.
