I guess, maybe not.
I read a comic where basically before he got his powers he ducked around with them until he failed to catch some guy who eventually shot Ben. So even if Ben was never killed I guess it would only be a matter of time until something similar would happen but with a someone not as close to Peter, so it would effect him just not as impactful as Ben dying. However I would just love to see peter just endless dick around with his powers getting back at bullies, stealing shit, and other irresponsible things.

Yes, he's a little selfish but not a bad guy. If anything he'd just be less careful. If its not Ben it would end up being someone else. Maybe he would've let Venom take over completely at worst
