He was super smart, but even by 35 hadn't accomplished anything beyond being able to afford a small house in the subarbs, a beautiful wife and daughter.

then, he began to seriously experiment and put his genius to use.

and before he's able to complete his first succesful invention, another version of him shows up, tells him there are infinite versions of himself, rendering any invention he ever makes pointless, because literally it has or will be done.

Infinity renders it moot in a way as far as achievement and creation.

To which, he replies, fuck this, theres literally no point, may as well just enjoy life with the family since then that's a more immediate fulfillment than inventing something you ALREADY KNOW, is being worked on and done by another version of you.

And just when he comes to that realization, and allows that huge burden of invention of his shoulders to enjoy his family, they are murdered.

So then he returns immediately to invention. Not out of a sense of desire to create, but out of necessity and revenge. Meaning that every invention he ever makes has been tainted for the goal of something other than the desire to create for its own sake.

You take a way a man's family and hobby, then satisfy his revenge (persumably), then he's basically staring at the next 35 years with nothing to fucking do but do whatever you want, because you have a portal gun and nothing left to lose.
