Imagine being a female character SO pointless, that your future incarnations have to have EVERY female stereotype, from Martial Arts to fashionista to lock picking.
>>
She's a product of her time, when female characters were either the ugly girl (Velma) or the hot girl (Daphne).
With the ugly girl it's easy to turn her into a nerd/the smart one and not break a sweat. It's harder to turn the hot girl into an interesting character.
Fred suffers from that a bit as well since he's just the leader/hot guy and doesn't really have any other traits. That's why mystery inc had to make him autistic for traps. To try and add some depth.
>>
>>95341211
She paid for everything. I don't think it was ever really elaborated on, but she (or rather, her parents) funded Mystery Inc. The van, the gas, food, etc.
>>
>>95341285
>That's why mystery inc had to make him autistic for traps

It was, at least, A Pup Named Scooby Doo that made him an autistic planner. Definitely wasn't as recent as Mystery Inc.
>>
>>95341285

Had to reread the traps sentence to remind myself of what you actually meant.

>>

>>95341332
This; it was explained in past episodes, and even some commercial bumps, she's the benefactor to the team.
>>
>>95341285
Fred had several uses. He was a straight man sometimes, although Velma usually filled that role. He was the leader. Later he became funny when he was allowed to be aloof. He could figure out some clues, usually the more physical orienated ones.

Shaggy and Scooby were the real meat and potatoes of the show. They had all the best gags, got chased by monsters, and enough personality quarks to basically carry the entire show by themself.

Velma was the primary straight man, pointing out how silly Scooby and Shaggy were, she could be the smart one that pieced things together.

Daphne was given the boring lines that could have gone to anyone. She was the pretty one and sometimes got kidnapped.
>>
Lock picking doesn't seem like a character trait that's out of bounds considering she gets captured so often
And honestly if we're justifying it all, martial arts doesn't seem like that bad of a skill in that regard, unless it's a one note thing that pops up randomly and is never used again

>How long before this turns into another Daphne vs Velma thread?
Like there's any competition.
>>
>>95341211
Yeah, that's a thing you see in long-running series with a damsel character. The future incarnations all agree they need to add depth besides "pretty kidnapped love interest", but none of them can agree what they need to add. So you end up with a character that has every characteristic under the sun, but only for one incarnation, before the next one ignores that and adds a different trait (all under the pretense of "finally fixing her").
>>
>>95341540

Realistically, it depends on the incarnation of each.
Example.

Classic Velma > classic Daphne.
MI Daphne > MI Velma.
>>
>>95341468
I was refering to her 60's character
>>95341460
You're right but I meant "useful" in terms of adding to the team.
Velma is the Genius. Fred is the leader that keeps everyone together. Shaggy had the ventriloquism. He and Scooby were the bait most times. Daphne though... The most she ever constantly did was be Clumsy enough to ruin the traps.
>>
>>95341211
Her pussy is the only thing inspiring Fred to lead. Shes very far from useless. Shes just not useful in the way you want her to be.

Daphne didn't need to be anything but eyecandy and leverage for the villain. She served her purpose well and wasn't obtrusive.

She held her own just fine when she replaced Fred and Velma in the 80's Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show.
>>
>>95341211
Funny considering she was the last survivor standing in a slasher film where the casting and characters were ripoffs of the Scooby Gang.
>>
>>95341433
>>95341332

I didn't know that... It makes more sense that she was a rich girl. The context clues were all there. She hung out with a white guy with an ascot and a girl who might be boarding school material. Not so much sense that she interacted with a stoner and his dog.
>>
>>95341340
Was watching Be Cool Scooby Doo and the gang as kids showed up to solve a mystery. Was so disappointed that Fred didn't accuse Red Herring of the caper.

>>
>>95341723
I think part of the reason is there really isn't a lot of roles to distribute.

What roles do they NEED? That's why Daphinee gets stuck with stop revisions. Oh she knows kung-fu, well the team doesn't need kung-fu because the formula is that they run away from the monster and than set a trap for it. They made her a tv show host which only works so long as every adventure is about them filming their encounter.

the importance of Velma is overblown, she determine how was the culprit and how and way it did it, but it never explain it until after they capture the "monster", and it wasn't relevant for the trap to work, which never did.
if they go directly for the trap part they would save a lot of time.

Her "story" was that she was the daughter of another crook the gang had caught earlier, who did so when they were already teens. She appeared to be a child in this "flashback", implying that she was in fact underage during the events of the episode. Ergo, her cover story was to be jailbait.

i'm defaulting to my kid opinion on this - Velma was not and is not ugly, nor was the intent to show her as such. She's freaking adorable. I always assumed she chooses to dress in a modest way because it fits her personality (meaning, what everyone does) and because she doesn't want to draw attention to herself too much.

I wouldn't even call her attire modest. I call it normal and I actually love to see women IRL dress without flash and whorish clothes.

Daphne is rich as fuck. So she probably contributes stuff to the group. I like her style too. It's feminine and classy without being slutty or vulgar. Be Cool's Daphne is funny (and DeLisle's voice is always sweet, swert music) and in MI she was a good character.

I really think that at times like these we go too far with complaints and depth and shit. It always, always ends badly in the long run.

As for Fred:

>tfw when you're high as fuck and a man dressed as a female gypsy fortune teller can't stop forseeing doom and curses in your future, but you know he's full of shit and even Velma doesn't know what the apropriate reaction to this situation is

I like him. I always saw him in a positive light. He's just a likeable, optimistic and benevolent guy with a great deal of curiosity and trapmanship. Also he could probably ruin your shit if he ever got angry. His MI version was great too as was his whole ordeal with family.

She's "ugly" like the girls in 90's teenage movies were "ugly"
The minute she takes off those glasses and gets a trendy haircut and outfit she'd make your dick stand erect.
She's not ugly she just isn't obsessed about her appearance like Daphne does.
>>
Daphne should have been knowledgeable about the things that Velma wouldn't, things like fashion and culture. It's okay to have a character that's just an archetypical girl, they just have to act and be treated by other characters appropriately. The rest of the gang are all wierdos by and large. Having a normal person to contrast with that makes sense.
I think the real issue with Daphne is that 99% of her screen time in the old cartoons was silently standing around with her hands on her hips. You never got a sense for what she got out of the whole spook hunting gig, or even why she was friends with the rest of them. That's why people always peg her as Fred's fuckdoll, cause there's no other way to interpret how aloof and disinterested she seems towards the rest of the group, or how she seems to be tagging along with the group for no reason.

Ew no anon stop the glasses and hair cut is what makes Velma Velma
>>

But Velma was always cuter.

Daphne doesn't even have that going for her.

She sounds like a stereotypical nerd now. Before she just sounded smart and sassy.
>>
Hey you guys. Are the characters considered /co/ because the character designer lives in America or is it /a/ because he's japanese?
>>
>>95355598
/co/ because the production company is American
>>
>>95355716
I'd agree with this. Intended audience is the key.
>>
>>95355850
No it's not? If a Japanese company makes an anime for Western audiences, it's still an anime.
>>
>>95341211
I used to tie myself to chairs when I was little to roleplay as Daphne (she was my favorite character)
I just realized recently that that probably is why I'm into bondage

There's a difference between sassy and sarcastic and being a controlling and borderline abusive bitch.

I am a fan of Velma in most incarnations but MI Velma took it a little too far.
>>
>>95357084
Pssh cant take the abuse huh? Hey at least she'd be loyal.
>>
>>95342092
I was always found that interesting. In the orignal show the 3 characters who seemed to be involved the most stuff are Shaggy, Scooby and Velma. So how was Daphne #3? Just because she was cute?

That's what I've always assumed. Truth be told, despite what this and other threads on the Velma/Daphne debate, most nerd side characters are not among the most popular in any show they're a part of. Sadly
>>
>>95357084
This. There's autistically correcting people but generally keeping to yourself (like that girl from Loud House or even A Pup Named Scooby). And then there's being aware that your actions are affecting people and that those actions can put them and everyone around you in danger. Velma should always be the former.
>>
>>95353225
HoIy Crap this. And your point is puntuated by the fact that they DID just that in the 2nd Movie and she was considered hot (or improved) there.
>>
>>95341468
Lockpicking is also really easy unless they spring for an expensive lock. It would take someone ~20 minutes to learn to pick 99% of locks.
>>
>>95357084
Velma HAD to take it too far, because Scooby was being a fucking dick for no reason at all.
>>
>>95360017
If you asked me she wasn't improved she was ruined

I was sorta referring to behind the scenes when Scooby wasn't around. A truly respectful not-cuntish person wouldn't go out of their way to change incidental and nondestructive things about their SO/make the relationship about themselves/ drive friendships apart without compromise/ and not talk out their problems in way MI Velma did. If anything Shaggy may have been a procrastinator and dodgy but at least he cared about both Scooby and Velma's opinions enough to try to go through with their requests and attempt to compromise. His actions were from a place of trying not to hurt anyone while Velma's (and Scooby's) just seemed to be from a place possession, as though both of them owned him and wanted to control who he was instead of appreciating him for him without care for how he felt about the 'other' person. It was like watching a cat being dragged around on a leash through the mud.

I would have loved a sweeter 'modest nerd' Velma from the previous incarnations with MI's Shaggy as that would probably lead to some nice moments.

Yes, this is one of the major things I had a problem with in MI to the point where it drags the series down for me. Having to watch an unpleasant love triangle that goes nowhere and was ultimately pointless to the plot is not my idea of fun.

Except Velma wasn't controlling him, he chose to be in a relationship with her. Standing up someone you're dating is the opposite of that.

Meanwhile Scooby was just hanging out with a friend and became possessive as fuck because... reasons.

She only has one stereotype: rich person.

Anon....

How is it abusive to expect someone who freely entered into a relationship with you to keep their promises (and not hang out with a dog instead)?
>>
>>95360278
I think the writers are to blame. They took the joke too far. They over-personified Scooby. The MI version has to have said the most fluent and the most emotional sentences of any incarnation. This version made him feel like more of an actual person while the first few cartoon appearences made him like a dog who just happened to talk. This leads to Shaggy having to treat him as such. He spends most of season 1 bargaining and lying to Scooby as if they were in an actual relationship. All they had to do was make Scoob less talkative.
>>
You guys are kinda looking at it backwards. It's pretty obvious that the relationship between Shaggy and Velma just wasn't meant to be. It lacks both mutual respect and even much romantic chemistry. I think a lot of you expect character development to always mean two people starting separate and coming together, when it could just as easily mean starting a couple and realising they should split.
>>
>>95361590
Realistically they would have probably remained friends with benefits, though I guess that's hard to depict on an ostensibly children's show.
>>
It all makes sense if you ask me seeing as Velma is not seen as attractive and they're always solving mysteries the only person she felt she could be with was shaggy which would explain her clinginess and her attempts at changing him
>>
>>95361476
Except that's not the reason. The actual problem is that Scooby doesn't understand the difference between a friend and a romantic partner.
