The first volume was great. The second volume was alright. The third volume was trash. Every single use of the Runaways since then has ranged from OK to trash. The problem is that by the end of the first volume, their whole reason for the team existing was thrown out the window. They were Runaways because they were running away from their parents. But then their parents were killed at the end of the first volume...

So then the second volume had them running away from their new foster homes... but then the people who put them in their foster homes stopped giving a fuck and wrote them off as a lost cause. At this point, almost everyone on the team is 18+ so... they aren't even Runaways. The whole premise for the team is thrown out the window. They're not a traditional super-team, so at this point it's just "some friends that take care of two underage teenagers" which just isn't super interesting.

Everytime they've used them since volume 1 ended, they pretty much have to keep coming up with newer and more hacky reasons to justify the team's existence beyond just "Well, uhh, they're a family and some of them have superpowers, and one of them is underage!"

For a person who makes a living doing YA novels, this first issue is way too much of a 30 minute TV show. I think in TV you can get away with minimal dialogue and decompressing on one scenario, but unless this entire story focuses on these three characters and the return of Gert. It'll be half a year before an arc is completed.

Well if it continues like this we'll have a solid run on our hands. Of course, things like Mockingbird have tought us that you can make an okay book unreadable forever with just a single issue so let's see how it goes.
The book is taking things nice and slow which makes sense when you want to stitch the team back together from where they are right now.
The only problem would be that nobody but fans will stick around for this. A new reader wouldn't know anything that's going on and have little incentive to keep reading.

This issue is everything wrong with current Marvel. Its decompressed to hell.

Read the first issue of the original run and then this. Everyone is introduced, you get their relationships, characters and personality right away. You get the main hook of the first arc right away. Its all there presented to you.

As a first issue introduction this is god awful. We aren't even introduced to the entire cast yet.

Not only is Gert bought back through contrived methods of time traveling, for the sake of freaking synergy. From the previews we don't even see Klara (a runaway the same age as Molly),, most likely removed due to synergy as well.

anyone who thinks this was a good issue is deluding themselves. New readers out there need to check out the original BKV run as well as the Whedon run.

People have been shouting for Gert to come back since she died, and she's been dead a long fucking time in comics standards. This is how Chase would approach it.

I agree that BVK moved it faster in issue one, but he decompressed EVEYTHING after the first arc. This doesn't need to have all this crazy action in issue one cause we know these characters and this is the pacing of Vol 2 and 3

Forgive me, but does anyone remember the Staff of One limits? It can't resurrect the dead, what what else can't it do? Could Nico use "Worthy" on herself and pick up Mjolnr?

Nico is basically the wizard equivalent of The Hulk - no skill, all power. By contrast Doctor Strange has no power outside that lend to him by outside forces like Vishantti or Ikon or Cyttorak, but no one is as skilled as him. Loki or Odin meanwhile have a lot of power AND had enough time to master it thanks to being immortal.

Obviously Moore intended the next writer at some point to deal with that plot but it never happened so it's been so long that Xavin's probably worked up good loathing by now.

Say he comes back, super pissed. I'm not saying villain, but reasonably angry. Guardians of the Galaxy pick him up, whatever, as long as it's not the Runaways cast.

So he comes back and just rips the shit out of Karolina for being a selfish bitch. Admits everything he did was to try to please her and maybe they have some real talk about how shitty he felt trying to force himself to be a girl. "Because it may be physically easy as a skrull to change gender but it's not that easy to change how you feel."

That the Whedon arc was his big effort to get her to acknowledge how much he's doing for her but the Moore arc was him actually giving up his own life for her and no one cared because he was always seem as a threat for some reason or another.

It gives the chance to talk about transgender issues of feeling dysphoric, Wraps up their arc and lets me feel cathartic about how much I hate Karolina's attitude. And if he sticks around maybe he and Klara can become bros talking about their shared experiences of feeling lost and give her some development.
