That's exactly my point. Sonic shouldn't be doing "cool" shit because he cares about his image, he's just a weirdo who loves doing mundane things in a cool fashion because he can.
Boom's characterization is so fucking insincere about everything because it desperately wants to be self-aware and "meta".

The Amy thing is a perfect example of the writers "not getting it." Sonic doesn't avoid Amy because he's afraid of his feelings. He avoids Amy because he's 15 and she's fucking 12 and it's awkward.

It's very intentionally ambiguous because, like most things Sonic, *marketing*.

Giving him a girlfriend might alienate some of the younger audience, but teasing a relationship sells to another demographic. Dropping hints that he likes her but doesn't want to commit yet, doesn't like her that way but is okay being her friend, he doesn't like her, her crush is shallow, her crush is sincere, etc means that EVERY option is correct and nobody has to be burned.

The way they handle the games is shoddy at best, but the way Sega markets Sonic himself has always been incredibly skillful.

What they did is build humor on subversions of the characters' typical actions, while forgetting this is a reboot and the characters are blank states.

There are so many episodes with the main punchline being "Eggman acts like a friend of Sonic's, and fighting is like theirs job or something, isn't that funny?" that, at this point, it's more characteristic of Eggman to be Sonic's asshole friend than an actual villain.

Which is fine if you treat the show as a riff of sorts on the mainline games, but not it's own thing.

It's a horribly designed turn-based RPG, the plot's structure is pretty poor and uneven, the DEEP LORE about the echidnas and aliens is half baked, the character dialogue peaks at "charming but extremely obvious" and is often rote, the controls suck, it's goddamn ugly and the music speaks for itself.
