I'm not an expert, I just know what I see on TV and read online. Russian orthodox christianity is quite harsh on things like homosexuality, imprudence etc. and Putin fully endorses this harshness. He regained power by standing behind the church, giving it power and then feeding off that power. Russia is so christian now soldiers carry inflatable churches with them. His marketing machine revolves mostly around what a decent and christian man he is, which is astounding considering his past. AFAIK, no one calls him out on his passt attitudes.

This strong focus on ultraconservative values and christianity comes from Putin, because he knows having an ultra-christian population and a non-secular state is the next best thing to absolute control.

Not a practicing Christian, but genuinely interested what that means. Aren't most of the old laws laid out in the Old Testament moot with Jesus freeing man of his sin? What Jesus laid out in the New Testament basically includes the general essence of the Ten Commandements, but isn't as era-specific and ludacris.
