Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead. After meeting a charming trickster named Hector (Gael García Bernal), the two new friends embark on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.

>In the Mexican town of San Angel, Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoë Saldana) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) have been friends ever since childhood. Although their lives have taken different paths -- Maria was sent to Europe, Joaquin joined the military, and Manolo studied to become a bullfighter -- one thing remains the same: Manolo and Joaquin both want to marry Maria. Little does the trio know that battling husband-and-wife deities have made a high-stakes wager on the love triangle's outcome.

>>
>>95297842
You know what bothers me the most about this film? It's not how ugly the characters are or the fact that it looks like a slight upgrade on Book of Life (which was shit). It's that moment in the trailer where the boy is watching the b&w movie and goes "yuck" when he hero kisses the lady.

Now I'm open to the possibility that this kid's just some giant faggot who thinks it's gross to kiss girls. But we both know that's not the case. No, this is the decrepit old trope of prepubescent boys finding girls and romance gross. And it's not fucking true. I did not think kissing was gross when I was this boy's age, and neither did any of my peers. This shit about boys being all about hypermasculinity and shunning girly things is either dead or close to dying and it's been that way for some time.

But Pixar, they LOVE hoary old tropes and stereotypes. Original thinking, or at least, observing how people act in real life as opposed to other cartoons and movies is anathema to them. That's why we got shit like the dad from Inside Out only ever thinking about football while his wife talks to him at the dinner table--comedy gold!--causing said wife to sigh because he never listens--ha!--and then daydream about hunky men--haha!

Because whenever they come, they can't stop yapping about how much better they were back in the states, how miserable they feel for being "forced" to visit their mexican relatives and how they refuse to use spanish despite them knowing it, My favorites are the typical tween cousins who talk shit in english in front of the whole family thinking no one in the room understands what they're saying.

In truth, is not so much a "hate" thing. Is just that neither side feels connected to the other. Chicanos most of the time can't relate to mexico because they've never lived here, and mexicans sometimes want to force their customs on their chicano relatives, not trying to understand their cultural background is completely different and detached from their lifestyle and traditions.

Chicanos may have mexican blood in them, but they're not really mexicans. And that's fine.

>Most mexicans dont give a shit about it and use it as an excuse to get wasted.
You're probably thinking of 5 de mayo, and not even that, no one gets wasted on 5 de mayo here.

There's 4 big traditions in mexico, Dia de la Independencia (Independence Day), Dia de Muertos (DoD), Semana Santa (Holy Week) and Dia de la Virgen (Virgin St Mary's day). Being a predominantly Catholic country, there's also some other minor holidays like Dia de la Santa Cruz (Festival of the Crosses) celebrated by construction workers and Día de Judas (Not sure on the english equivalent for this one) celebrated by some weirdos.

People treat Dia de Muertos with a lot of respect and solemnity, I don't remember anyone ever getting drunk or doing much "celebration" that day. It mostly consists of paying respects to the death, cleaning their tombs, some do vigils in graveyards that day, and setting up the altar in your house. But I'm from the South, I've no idea what the Northern savages do that day, and I wouldn't put it past behind them to disrespect the death and get wasted on that day.

Lasseter being stretched between Disney and Pixar started around the time of Ratatouille though.

I'd say there's other factors too like the death of Joe Ranft (who was the real brains of Pixar's story team in the early years) and the failure of John Carter (not just directed by Andrew Stanton, but actively pushed onto Disney as a potential franchise by him and other Pixar higher-ups)

Dumbass
Aztecs didn't die from overpowered weaponry
The Spaniards ganged up with all the smaller tribes and by that time most Aztecs we're dead from disease anyways so it didn't even matter
Spaniards walked in and won by sneezing once
Their weapons we're on par with Aztecs
Also
Spaniards fought to kill
Aztecs fight to capture and sacrifice

This is a great idea we need more variety in Mexican themed movies, The story is interesting enough that even if your not Catholic you can enjoy it, and its not another Day of the Dead movie.
Besides Guadalupe, Aztecs, and El Dorado is there any other interesting Mexican stories/ Culture?

Another Disney movie that'll be forgotten and treated like it never existed. Stop with the skeletons. Bring on the Aztec lore.

If the Oscars actually gave a fuck about animation, the only films in that category would be like the ones in this lineup:

When I lived in Mexico there was a holiday where the entirety of the village would make a ton of tamales, pan con leche, pozole, and atole, and everyone would go from house to house partaking in the food people made and generally having a good time with one another.

Anyone know if this was dia de Los Muertos, or some other Mexican holiday?

Whatever it was, it was awesome.

I already told this many times on /co/, but once again, PIXAR has still got "it".
Patrician fans, like me, are always watching PIXAR's great dedications for animation.
This movie sure deserves to win the Oscars with no complaint, just like Zootopia did last year.
We don't take a lazy internet meme seriously, like "See that?? PIXAR is going downhill! they're doomed! LOL", but the plebs fall for it.

There is the stereotype that dictates that chicanos (the mex ones, at least) are always fighting for "mah mexican heritage" (most of the time, only the Aztec linage forgetting that modern Mexico is a mix of Spaniard, several indigenous cultures and to a lesser extent, African); however they don´t try to learn Spanish, they don´t care about their parents´ culture (real Mexican cuisine, music, history) and they will never step inside in Mexican territory.

I know there are a few people who strongly refuse the Oscars' fame, but who wants to share the same room with them?
The Oscars are about alpha celebs, rich, beautiful actors and actresses, while the refusers are consisted of low-life ugly nerds.
Seeing that animators can share the room with alpha celebs there, it will make them proud to be an animator.
Do the Oscars matter? Yes, they matter.
