It's curious to note that both Rick and Xavier are a parody of those mentalities.

Where it goes wrong is that Rick is a tongue-in-chick-but-not-so-much-really parody, that even if meant as an absurd edgy extreme, this is not checked in-show. Rick is right in the end, his gratuitous nihilism is portrayed as funny just because it is so, and this shit attitude goes unchecked.
In the end, the over the top parody is really a mouthpiece for the author.

On the other hand, Xavier's attitude confronts constantly with the shit it does, and the parody works because the character isn't given the final word in this dialogue about life. The show mocks him instead of leaving him unchecked.


Here's the kicker:
XRA's over-the-top parodical life-affirming lessons end up more fulfilling than R&M's gratuitous unironic nihilistic takeouts.
One says "life has no value" the other "you give value to your life"
