How bad were the Secret Empire sales? Historically bad.

2nd worst selling event in the last 7 years. Worst selling event among those that went to Issue #10

slightly easier to appreciate the badness if you take issue 1 out of the picture (Thank you Secret Wars #1 for screwing up the scale)

You can also see how good or bad an event is by using the Batman Index AKA How well it sold compared to what the main Batman book sold in that same month.

Right of the bat, you can tell Secret Empire had the weakest #1 of all Marvel events using the Batman Index -- granted, Batman had very strong numbers that month (Batman #22) and in fact Batman sold more than Secret Empire #1, but Batman #23 brings down the value of the Batman index, so Secret Empire #1 comes out ahead -- if it wasnt for that, it would be negative!
>>
Ya blew it, Marvel.

As usual, Secret Wars #1 throws the fucking scale of the chart out of whack!

Secret Wars #1 had such strong sales that it sold 300% more than Batman did that same month!

AXIS of course is the worst selling event and of course the worst performer using the Batman Index.

Fear Itself is an oddity in that it came pre-flashpoint, at a time Batman was selling 50K units, so the numbers look good until Nu52 batman drops and then gets rekt.

Secret Wars and AVX were the best events, sales wise, always outperforming the Batman Index

Other than Secret Wars, AVX and Fear Itself* (see my previous comment), every event tended to sell worse than Batman on average on an issue to issue basis.
>>
>>95272147
Now I'm not a Marvel person, but I must ask if SE was worse (quality story, art, etc) than AXIS.
>>
The idea of the Batman Index charts is to easily tell whether a comic sold better or worse than Batman... if the graph goes up, they sold more than Batman, if the graph goes down, they sold worse than Batman.

All the numbers are percentages for the purpose of these charts.
>>
that's a lot of work, I appreciate, but your graphic skill sucks

Just put the numbers from best to worst
>>
>>95272355

Secret Wars > AVX > **** > Secret Empire > AXIS
>>
>>95272308

Secret Empire was much better than Axis, AvX, Fear Itself, Original Sin, and especially CWII
>>
>>95272308
Ehhh... depends. if you think AXIS is worth reading due to being stupid fun in some places, then yes Secret Empire is worse.
>>
>>95272147
Why Marvel events are so bad lately? I think the only good marvel event since 2010 was secret wars.
>>
>>95272529

I enjoyed AVX
>>
>>95272147
Why are people selling this as a success?
Were the predictions that bad that this feels like a victory?
>>95272551
Never made sense to me, hero vs hero are completely stupid events imo, and it felt kind of pointless looking back. Surely must be my inner x-fag
>>
>>95272220
>Right of the bat
>>
>>95272147
It makes me happy to see how instantly people dropped civil war two and secret wars
>>
>>95272730

Do you ever see Marvel or Nick Spencer admit failure?

Also, didnt say it was good or smart, just enjoyable.

>>95272746
The pun wasn't intentional

>>95272775
Wrong. Issues #1 are full of extra discounts and variants, which is why they sell so well for Marvel.

You're looking at it the wrong way, it's not that 500K people bought Secret Wars #1, is that 500K units of Secret Wars #1 were available for people to buy -- Many of those regular cover #1s were bought with the LCSs knowing full well they were never gonna be sold and they'd be making the money off the variants instead.

Also, you gotta remember that Marvel does a lot of tier discounts, where sometimes its cheaper for a LCS to order 80 copies of something than it is 60.
>>
>>95272775
The majority of those sales for the #1s are likely variants
>>
>>95272529
They were never good in the first place.
>>
>>95273017

DC also puts out a lot of no good events...

Trinity War and Forever Evil?
>>
>>95273103
Events in general are terrible but historically DC's have been at least moderately readable with three or four good ones.

You know it's bad when Marvel's best event is Civil War.

tbqh I enjoyed the captain america steve rogers comics up until hydra cap showed his true colors blocking out carol and the others with the shield.
>>
>>95272147
add secret empire 0
>>
>>95274038

NO.

Not many events had a zero issue.
>>
>>95272874
Plus don't forget that Secret Wars #1 and Civil War II #1 were also included in Funko's subscription box.

I'm kind of wondering if people being aware of this is why there hasn't been a comic included with the Marvel or DC boxes lately.
>>
>>95274061
but is a nice "trick", secret empire as a full event sales should have 100k or more just for this 0 issue.
>>
>>95274061
so? not many events have 10 issues, if you want you can think that secret empire had 11 issues
>>
>>95274208

12, if you consider the FCBD.

I'll see what I can do...
>>
>>95274208
This is a good point. Here's what I was able to find for #0s.

AVX #0: 134,509
Original Sin #0: 73,024
Secret Wars #0: Unknown because this was an FCBD book and so they didn't chart it
Civil War II #0: 177,283
Secret Empire #0: 162,718
>>
>>95274165
is a very nice trick because in practice they have two first issues (and everyone knows that first issues usually sell very good)
>>
>>95274340

I just don't think to start with #0s is a good way to compare series.
>>
Wonder if the people that kept defending SE just gave up.
>>
>>95276352
I'm not going to be the one to check out the Marvel cbr forums. Last time sales came out, they ignored that it was falling hard for being a Big Summer Event
>>
>>95276352
Well here's the CBR link if you want it

Ugh, I feel like I lost some IQ points from that thread, particularly that redjack guy -- didn't he write a comic that was terrible just a few months ago for Marvel?
>>
>>95276867
That's Mosaic's writer

He wrote Mosaic, his real name is Geoffrey Thorne.

A real hack that shills incredibly hard for Marvel because it's the company that gave his dumb ass a chance.

This is what he looks like...
>>
>>95277035

So that's the one! I knew he was a Marvel writer, but couldn't remember what crap he wrote -- guess that's how forgettable his stuff is.
>>
>>95276755
Is it that Warren guy's job to defend Marvel at all costs?
>>
Is Brevoort still doing his smug "you don't even half the story when it comes to our sales" posts after all that's happened? Never checked him again after the apathy he claimed is the worst enemy of sales seized me.

axis was dumb fun and secret empire is a book that just drones on and on

i liked axis better
>>
>>95272307
>AXIS of course is the worst selling event
I will never not understand Original Sin not doing worse, for the premise alone.

>>95277878
>the irony in that final tweet
No one at Marvel right now could have written a better end.
Well maybe Ewing could have done it this well, because continuity.

I know next to nothing about Axis' main book, but there were some fun tie ins. RIP in pieces, Carnage Man, taken from us too soon.

>>95272147
Fuck this list, I refuse to believe that Original Sin outsold AXIS.
>>
>>95272147
Now do DC.
>>
>>95272220
>>95272307
>>95272342
Mind you, Secret Emprie #1 only sold better than Batman of that month because Diamond counted sales for lenticular and standard covers as separate books.
>>
>>95281474
I think everyone saw AXIS as a continuation of the Remender-verse, and all those that didn't follow from the beginning a book who was sold as flagship but quickly went its own route, decided to not bother. On the other hand, Original Sin was this huge "everyone has a terrible continuity shifting secret" bullshit that people used to eat the fuck out of.
>>
>>95282102

Yes and No. For Batman Index, because Batman ships twice a month, I use the average instead.

Batman #22 indeed sold more than Secret Empire #1 (due to lenticular covers), but Batman #23 brought the index down just enough for Secret Empire to be above it.
>>
>>95282318

Original Sin also gave us that fucking "Nick Fury whispers crap into Thor ear" scene
>>
>>95282102
What's stopping OP from adding those two numbers together though? Also, for the first few issues of SE he could add Flash to the Batman scale, because of the Button
>>
>>95282953
Flash 21 and Batman 21, with its lenticular covers, came out the month before Secret Empire #1
>>
>>95282953

Also, I did add the lenticular covers for Batman #22 when counting the Batman Index for the month that Secret Empire #1 came out.

However, as I explained, Batman #23 brought the Index down just below Secret Empire #1
>>
>>95281517

What would you like me to do for DC? Got any specifics?
>>
>>95282932
That's kinda part of the retcon shitfest, along with getting rid of real Nick Fury for (((SYNERGY))) Fury.
>>
>>95283047
Probably events as well? Though n52 events are weird. Maybe Batman crossovers? Although that too is incredibly hard to measure, since it's all about the tie-ins.
>>
>>95283724
There were a lot of inter-family events during the New52 (like the GL's and Supers), but not a whole lot of capital-E Events. Forever Evil would count, and possibly Convergence (that did pause the line for two months), but that is all I can think of. You would have to go back to Flashpoint, then Blackest Night, then Final Crisis and Infinite Crisis.
I'm sure that I am forgetting some.
>>
>>95283985
I don't think Convergence should count. The pause in publication was because of the headquarters move. They couldn't ask normal creative teams to increase their pacing enough to fill in the gap, so they queued up a story so that they wouldn't have two blank months. It wasn't even really promoted to be "important." Everyone knew it was filler.
>>
>>95280899
>>95281474
Not a secret that the tie ins are more interesting than the actual main event.
>>
>>95272874
>Do you ever see Marvel or Nick Spencer admit failure?
Yes, they will admit it was readers' fault.
>>
>>95284032
I agree with you that it was 100% known filler, but it might have to act as filler in the charts, because damn DC has not done a lot of Summer Events.
