At least Freakazoid didn't rely half on "whimsy" and formula-based like Animaniacs and Tiny Toons. The second season was way better than one since it got rid of the "multiple shorts" variety and more on *somewhat* more structured plots.

I knew plenty of kids that hated Animaniacs as a kid. They didn't get the most of the jokes and references.

Really, at the end of the day Animaniacs was a mixed back with there being good shorts (Most of the Warner Brothers, Pinky and The Brain, Slappy Squirrel.), ones that relied too much on formulas (Buttons and Mindy, Katey Kaboom), meh ones (Goodfeathers, Chicken Boo), and shitty ones (The hippos, Minerva Mink.).
