Sal started treating Malaya like shit in her first speaking appearance.

She made it very clear she doesn't like her, isn't her friend and doesn't want her around. Malaya responded as one would expect, negatively.

Then it was made clear that Marcie enjoyed Malaya's company and Sal would have to get along with her. And in her weak attempt to make friends, she invited Malaya to hangout, called her a "cumstain" and grabbed her in anger. [Pic related]

So, basically from what we've seen Sal is the one who started all this shit. The only way people are supposed to side with her is if they still hate Malaya from Shortpacked for not liking nerdy stuff as much as the annoying people around her at the store. I'm sure the comments when she appeared are universally anti-Malaya despite her not doing anything particularly shitty in DoA (or Shortpacked, really). And once again Willis has failed to even do the small amount of work to justify why Sal doesn't like her in the first place. Malaya treating Sal badly in kind doesn't count.

It's never been made clear why Sal doesn't like her, but Malaya basically thinks it's because she doesn't obsess over how cool Sal is. Now, Sal *is* a total loner who basically only wants to hang out with Marcie, but that hasn't kept her from treating Carla, Dorothy, Joyce, Danny and Billie pretty well. She even gets along with Amazi-Girl.

I never really bought into the Malaya hate, and I while I don't hate Sal I think she's in the wrong, so my preferred way of this playing out is Malaya bullying Sal physically because she finally picked a grudge with someone who is tougher than her. But I think Willis still places Sal and Amber at the top of the power rankings so that probably won't happen.

The implication is that Sal is scared of Malaya taking Marcie away from her. Sal has people she occasionally hangs out with, but Marcie is her only friend. The issue is that at this point we've seen that Malaya is a giant cunt to Lucy for no reason to the point of immediately putting in a room transfer after they met, but is agreeing to room with Sal despite their shared animosity. Her reaction to Sal is also a little weird, as other than Joyce no-one really obsesses over how cool Sal is outside a gag at this point. Sal's being a complete bitch for no reason, but at this point from an audience perspective Malaya comes off as a deeply unpleasant person herself.

It also doesn't help that this entire plot is a basically "can't work up the nerve to talk to the girl I like" between two uncommonly recurring characters where one side wants to fuck and the other is completely oblivious. Fucking hell, Marcie's been going after Malaya for like three or four weeks in universe and doesn't even know if Malaya is into chicks.

This story is completely ass-backwards. Malaya and Sal should have been roommates first, then have Marcie take an interest in Malaya because a hostile relationship between roommates complicated by a mutual friend/lover is fodder for character and relationship development, and drama. "Hey, that chick you don't like is now your roommate," is a shitty rehash of an Odd Couple set up that completely misses the point of the Odd Couple.

Yeah, but the difference is that Sarah noticed Billie smells like alcohol, picks fights in the middle of floor meetings and insults people while talking up her cheerleader past. That tied with her bad experience with Dana's substance abuse makes a pretty clear picture of why she doesn't like her. She even says that Billie seems like a drunken party goer and that clashes with her attitude and what she wants to do at Uni.

Sal Malaya has all the animosity without any of the reasoning.
