What are your hopes, fears, and expectations for the IDW Sonic comics?

I hope they include the cartoon characters. That was part of what made Archie's comics so unique, that they were this kind of last vestige of characters people grew up with, loved, and took into their hearts.

I ran a poll asking this very question a few weeks back, though I can't remember if I posted it here or on /sthg/. Anyway, the majority wanted the main focus to be action with some elements of shipping and furry drama.

Hopes: Archie Sonic (SatAM) cast, hard reboot in the "classic" Sonic style (a la Mania)

Fears: Only Sega Game characters, only video game adaptions. Attempt to make the "Boom" version of characters the only versions (cartoon is fine, but I want to be it's own thing)

I'm afraid Sonic will end up a Gary Stu because SEGA wants it's mascot character to be perfect.

I want it to focus more on the characters than the setting. I appreciate what Ian was trying to do and his stuff is pretty good but it got pretty boring and expository too often. I want writers who can do banter well and take advantage of the settings and characters we have rather than introducing five new characters every arc without making them endearing to the audience. The best Archie OCs add a dynamic or archetype to the cast that didn't exist before (Cassie and Clove, Thunderbolt, Breezie). On top of that, a talented writer would have a lot to work with considering just the established cast, since the games can't really do banter well, being translated from Japanese or just plain poorly written, and the plot has to revolve around Sonic, unlike an issue of a comic book where characters can get focus and interact with other characters for more than a few seconds at a time outside of the context of Sonic.

If I were in charge I'd use the Champions arc as a guideline for the whole comic. It develops and utilizes existing characters, it has stakes and intrigue but mostly remains lighthearted, there are nice shoutouts to elements of Sonic and SEGA for fans, and most importantly there's tons of fun cartoon violence.
