You got to remember that the Midnight Circus was illustrated by Duncan Fegredo, though. While I love his art, it lacks the tenebrism and simplicity of Mignola, whose panels sometimes feel incredibly effortless and abstract (not saying this as a bad thing, it feels like visual poetry).
