Why did it fail /co/?

It was story of triumph, overcoming adversity, improving one's self and learning on another.

It's also a budding romance between too adolescent girls who discover their sexuality and immense love for one another.
>>
It's not from a household name studio like Disney or DreamWorks and it came out during the worst August ever.
>>
>>95219937
The story wasn't good.
>>
>>95219937
I saw a trailer for it before Kimi no Na Wa, and it felt like I'd already seen the whole movie by then end of it.
>>
>>95219937
They should have kept the original release date. Also Leap! is a shitty title.

of course it failed its not Disney, it had no advertisement, and had a generic ass name
also I only saw the trailer where the blonde girl blowing the fuck out of the red head and I knew she was best girl right there, how big is her role in the movie?

shes such a bitch I love it
>>
>>95219937
They called the movie Leap! and the poster was two kids flying over Paris on some makeshift flying machine in the late 19th century.

The movie is actually about an orphan girl who goes to ballet school.

No one wants to hear that the movie they thought was a steampunk adventure that takes place in France is actually about a girl in a ballet school. Ergo, it failed.

The poster is a joke.
>>
The trailer was dubbed in English and the lack of lip sync made the whole thing look shitty.

Also it took like, forever to come out.

I'm still not clear on why they replaced Dane Dahaan for the US English version. With the recasting and the release date change, I'm going to guess that there was a negative test screening at some point, but changing just the one cast member, and changing him to an actor who is arguably no more talented and arguably less well-known is baffling.

I blame these guys. They spent 30 years releasing independent and foreign movies at Miramax, then started their own company to become more "mainstream." The problem is they keep taking water from the same independent/non-US well that they had been going to at Miramax, except now sometimes they take a film and try to "mainstream-itize" it. That's why it took so fucking long to finish Fanboys and why this movie had it's US release date changed three times.

It's like, "We'll distribute your independent movie after you do the recuts and reshoots that we want." Well, it's not fucking independent movie by that point, is it?
>>
>>95219937

Haven't seen it yet, but if it really is about gay adolescent girls...that would do it.

If I wanted to lose money on making a movie as fast as possible, that's what I'd do.
>>
>>95219937
It was an animated cgi movie but with a live action plot and characters.
>>
It was cute, but nothing spectacular.

I think it probably would have done better with more advertisements. I didn't even know it existed until I was at the theater.

Also, dropping the shitty pop music for either something sung in French, or else just plain classical music.
>>
>>95219937
I liked the theme song..

Because nobody fucking heard of it?

Seriously outside /co/ I've never even seen this movie mentioned or advertised anywhere.
>>
>>95223973
Other than anything made by Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith, the Weinsteins have never made anything good.
>>
Those girls make me hard

You're a strange twisted fuck, anon. But I like you anyways. :)

This x100
how can a studio expect to make any money when they don't spend a dime on advertising?
>>
>>95219937
Somehow I get the feeling that spoiler isn't true. But thanks for the mental image.
>>
>>95219937
Need more haughty blonde princesses bullying redheaded commoners. It's truly a miracle of the universe.
>>
>>95223173
I have to agree, that is not the way to advertise a movie about a little girl trying to go to ballet school. That looks like some epic fantasy adventure. If that was all I saw and then I went to the movie, I'd be somewhat disappointed that they aren't flying around trying to stop Paris from being destroyed by a giant teslacoil robot.
>>
>>95222994
Not like Ballerina was a better title.
>>
>>95219937
Anon, I think that spoiler is what the youth these days calls "head canon"
>>
>>95223173
I agree. This was the poster shown in México, and while it does convey what the movie is about, it also bombed because, well... >>95223085
>>
>>95219937
I just think people didn't like the redhaired transgirl.
>>
It was pretty good, much better than I expected.
The songs were great and the whole movie is fun, cute and uplifting.
Just don't expect greatness on the level of Studio Ghibli, Makoto Shinkai or Mamoru Hosoda.
It's my favorite non-Japanese and non-GKIDS foreign animated film from last year, and that's saying a lot. (Your Name., The Red Turtle, In This Corner of the World, A Silent Voice, My Life as a Zucchini and Long Way North were all much better)

Something tells me this would've done much better in the US if GKIDS released it but it still found a way.
Ballerina finds a way.

Also, the UK/Canada English dub was great and I loved it more than the original French version, even if the UK/Canada English dub still has that Hong Kong-style feel to the dubbing and even if I am fluent in French.
The US English dub was okay but the UK/Canada English dub and the French version are both better.

Me and my girlfriend both watched this and we both loved it, she actually loved it on the same level as Your Name..
Now, we are both waiting for Mary and the Witch's Flower.
>>
>why did it fail

It made back its money internationally already with profit. It didn't fail. It wasn't a smash hit by any means, but not a failure.

>>95223519
They replaced him because they made the boy character weird in the US version. If you compare the dialogue in the international version to the US version, there's a lot more "witty" jokes and one-liners and the boy character exaggerates more.

Like in the scene where he's telling Felicie about his day. In the scene, it's showing stills of how he went to a shitty bar, got kissed by a fat lady, met another kid who works with the guy building the Eiffel tower, (presumably) got drunk and danced on a table, then got kicked out of the bar, went to this guy's workshop and got electrocuted by an invention etc.

In the international version it's very normal dialogue ("I met some fine friends [fat lady smooching on him]; etc) punctuated by the funny images. In the American version, every single still frame where they show him doing something has to be described in a "witty" way. Like when they show him kissing the this old fat lady he says something like "And a gorgeous young lady wanted to get to know me"; meets the weird kid says "I met a BRILLIANT inventor like myself!"; get electrocuted he says something like "And I lit up the room with my ideas!"

They also added a metric ton of ad-libbed "jokes" like the "I'M OKAY" with the bells.

That's not what ballet is about though. A ballet dancer practices every hour of every day in order to become technically perfect. There aren't very many opportunities for professional ballerinas, and any minor position in a dance production is fought for tooth and nail.

Not only that, but ballerinas are like race horses. Once a dancer breaks a bone, you might as well take them out back to put them out of their misery, since the only choice they have after that is to dance through the pain, and having their feet never heal, OR by the time their bone actually does heal, they've fallen so behind on practicing that the next young thing after them has already taken her position permanently.

But both My Life as a Zucchini and Long Way North are French movies, though.
And The Red Turtle is a French-Japanese co-production.

The girls are ugly as hell and the subject matter is incredibly boring.

Where is the adventure?

I don't understand this shit. You become a business man not to make money, but to selfish-ly take control of everything and leave your mark on it for the sake of it?
Are they fucking 7? You have to be an immature 7 year old or a very mentally insane insecure person to care more about your ego than money.
