CalArts student here. One of my instructors has a friend who is working on Frozen 2. Disney forced them to create a love interest for Elsa for Frozen 2. They created a whole draft and when they presented it to Disney, the entire team basically blindsided them and revealed Elsa's love interest is a girl.

They said take it or leave it, that's the only way they can give Elsa a love interest. Disney was supportive but because of the current political climate in America (the presentation was a few weeks after the 2016 election) and the international reaction, they're allowing the team to create a script where Elsa does not end up with someone.

it's not like that draft was ever a secret, though. Disney has always been open about Ashman's draft. Hell, the Aladdin Broadway musical is 50% Ashman's original story and 50% the actual Disney movie.
