I actually quite liked this show until it stopped being "fun first, plot later" and it turned into "plot, plot and maybe some more plot. Oh, and fun, sometimes".
Suprisingly enough, all my favourite episodes were written by Rebecca Sugar (What was lost, i remember you, simon and marcy). I didn't even knew of her existance at that time, and i didn't find out until starting watching SU years later. Guess i was fated to like SU from the Getgo.
Anyways, my all-time favourite is still What was lost, it still hits me right in the feels.

My problem is these shows thinking that anything they do can blend in with anything else. The show started out as a goofy rubberhose world with a DnD theme. It should've stayed that way.

Rubberhose never took itself seriously and almost ALWAYS went the slapstick route. Nowadays however, it takes itself too seriously and water down the comedy to much. Like drinking fruit juice and drinking watery cordial.

Yes Pen Ward and others brought a lot of elements from the rubberhose school of animation, first with Flapjack then with Adventure Time. Too bad they forgot to copy the sense of volume and dynamic angles. The result is pretty flat and kind of Flash-y (as in Adobe Flash).

You've merely mimicked the style without applying any of the polish, and you've taken it and put it into genres where it isn't strong enough to carry itself. Nobody wants to watch an old timey rubberhose cartoon where the characters break down and cry because one character had a miscarriage, or some other edgy serious topic like that. They want pies in the face, anvils and pianos falling, and general slapstick.
